On 5/3/02 engine check light came on and we took it to the dealership. They checked it and replaced the dpf sensor, updated computer and cleaned fuel injectors. The following week, I had trouble starting 3 times after work. The following Wednesday, my wife drove it to work and when she tried to start it after work there was a loud "bang" and it took another 1/2 hr to get it going. When she got it going again there was a loud "tapping" from the engine. We called the dealer and towed it in. They checked and said the coolant was leaking into the oil and the engine could not be rebuilt. It was going to cost us $4000 plus labor to have another engine put in. This vehicle has been very well maintained. On doing some research we found that this is a common problem with this particular engine, and there was a recall (#99B29) related to this problem that we never received. We ordered the truck in Jan 1996, and took delivery in March 96 which falls within all of the date ranges specified on F150.com. We have since contacted our salesman, he checked out the problem and called us back telling us to bring it in. This will involve another towing and I'm not sure it will solve anything we do not already know. We do not feel that we should have to pay $4000 for an engine on a truck that has been well maintained. Where do we go from here?

Engine knock at start up. I brought the problem to the attention of Ford when the truck was still underwarranty. They knew it was a problem and did not have a fix. So therfore they did nothing. Now that the problem is worsing, Ford has a solution but will do nothing as it is out of warranty. I feel they avoided finding a solution and fixing until the vast majority of engines were out of warranty and now will not own up to the fix.

The engine is knocking; we park it and we feel that it is a defect in the motor we had it put on the machine and the person whom checked it. Said it was not something that could hve been helped. We took it to a Ford place and had it checked there. We have done regular maintenance on it. When we got it we had to take it in for leaking oil and they said they replaced the seal on it it went in twice for this I feel this problem may have resulted in the leaking, and I feel I should not have to replace it if it is a possible defect in the motor thank you for taking the time to read this. Please let me know what I need to do in this matter thank you again for your time and trouble. Started the motor in the morning to go to work, knocking noise from either back of motor or front of transmission. Took vehicle to dealer where I purchased it from. Was told by technician that he also heard nkocking noise. Technician put stethoscope on motor says oil pump might be bad. His sugesstion on the work order was to pull the oil pan and inspect bearings. This was not performed due to the fact that I was never informed of there recomendation. Technicians final recomendation was for me to purchase a brand new motor from the dealer and allow them to put it in for a low low price of $3000 out the door. This seems to me to be very deceitful due to the fact that not hardly anything was done to find the source of the knock but yet there final decision is for me to pay $3000 for a new motor and installation. When they do not even know if this is the problem. Cost me $35 for there deceitful recomendation. I have been searching the internet for other 1997 Ford F-150 motor problems that include knocking noises and they are every where on the web. All motor problems with the same symptoms as mine are all low mileage motors. Mine only has 67951 miles on it. I have religously maintained all aspects of my vehicle. Ford sells low qaulity products and there dealers are deceitful!
