Owner concerned because three out of four Firestone wilderness size 16" tires went flat within a two week period for no apparent reason. Tire size P23570R16, original tire equipment, and tire mileage 39,000. Tires were taken to a Firestone dealership. Two of the tires have been replaced at owner's expense. Dot#W208.

Firestone wilderness tires P235/70R16 experienced tread separation on 3 different occasions, dot BM089434, consumer contacted Firestone who said it was not their problem.

PE00-020, Firestone wilderness ht, original equipped tire, size P23570R16 and dot W281pt. Consumer was driving at approximately 75 mph when right front tire tread came completely off all the way to steel belt, causing damage to fender. Tire did not deflate and had only 22,000 miles. Minutes prior to incident, consumer noticed vehicle was pulling to the right as though there was an alignment problem. Also, tire was at correct pressure which he had checked earlier that same day.

Consumer's son was traveling about 70mph on the highway there was a blowout, and felt vehicle was jerking. Consumer was facing the opposite side of the highway. Got out of vehicle and saw rear on passenger's side was damaged, and rubber tread had come off the tire. Also, muffler pipe was hanging from the vehicle. There was front end damage.

Heat from exhaust is heating up the tires, causing the tire tread to come apart, this has happened twice on the interstate, and is a safety issue.

Upon inspection of other tires, steel belting could be seen on two of the remaining tires even though there was at least 3/16 of tire tread on edge of tire. All tires were replaced. Tread came off of the tire while driving at 75mph, tire disconnected from vehicle, causing the vehicle to go out of control. Also, knocked underneath, causing vehicle to cut off and power steering went out. Dealer contacted, and stated the tires were not under warranty and they cannot duplicate the problem, damage to vehicle was $700, and vehicle was not driveable. General tires 235/70/16. Tire companies contacted and, could not duplicate the problem.
