2011 Ford F150 equipped with 3.5L turbo charged engine traveling at 65 mph began misfiring and suddenly experienced a near total loss of power, causing the vehicle to slow to 25 mph quickly. The vehicle was traveling on a two lane highway with no shoulder and no place to pull off the road. This incident did not pose an immediate threat to car or driver, but under other conditions such as overtaking (passing) slower traffic, the sudden and near total loss of power could be disastrous. After quick research and consultation with the Ford service center where I purchased the truck, I have learned the vehicle entered into "limp" mode to protect itself from mechanical damage. I have also found that this problem has long been acknowledged by Ford Motor Company and has been the subject of a few technical service bulletins. Also to the best of my knowledge, Ford, through this series of technical service bulletin's has failed to provide a permanent solution to this problem. I am filing this complaint in hopes that the NHTSA in cooperation with Ford Motor Company can provide a quick and permanent solution to this problem before someone is seriously injured or worse due to an engineering flaw on a motor vehicle.

Upon trying to pass a truck, when I stepped on the gas for added power, the engine convulsed and shook the entire truck, lost power, engine light flickered... I pulled over immediately, called the Ford dealership, they did a check through on star (type system). Said they saw nothing?! started back up, seemed to be fine once again. This has happened now multiple times. Always when stepping on the gas for added power, same scenario. This is the eco boost engine. While I love the power, it has failed me 5 times to date. Same problem as the PE 13-018 report.

While merging into traffic the engine began to loose power and misfire. The vehicle entered "limp home" mode, noted by a flashing check engine light. The vehicle was taken to the Ford dealership and simply had the error codes cleared. Similar incident occurred few months later and the vehicle underwent recommended repair/upgrade per Ford tsb including intercooler cover and reflash of computer. For past week vehicle has had persistent power loss and "shuttering" during acceleration. This not only limits the drivability of the vehicle, it also endangers the occupants when attempting to merge with traffic and crossing intersections. The dealership is aware of the problem, however there seems to be no effort to find a "complete and lasting" solution.

I have been having problems with engine noise ranging from a deep howling to a sound like a steel chain being drug over an aluminum ladder. I have had problems with the sync, memory seats and steering wheel, auto start, and an ongoing problem with hesitation or miss firing in the engine that cause the truck to loose power on acceleration and go into limp mode. I have had some really close calls getting onto the highway where I was almost hit from behind when the truck lost power. I have had the truck in the shop 13 times and getting ready to go back for the 14th time. I have tried the BBB and the lemon law program which I was denied by a third party arbitrator. I was expecting that because a BBB employee said 93% of all people that file a lemon law claim in Missouri get denied. I have an extended warranty with 50,000 miles left on it and the Ford engineer in charge of repairs says he refuses to do anything about the engine noise anymore because of the past failed repairs. This is an V6 ecoboost. I don't know what to do next.

Following two heavily laden 18 wheelers during a light rain storm for two or more miles on a paved, two lane county road, it came clear for me to pass, I accelerated and all went well for just long enough for me to get even with the first one in front of me. My momentum carried me far enough to pull back in front of the first truck. By that time I was in serious trouble. My truck would barely run, it was vibrating violently and there was no acceleration to get me out of the way of the truck I had just passed. Had he not braked hard for me there could have been a serious wreck. I've have had 5 other incidents with this vehicle. I've taken it up with fomoco, over a period the first year. Working through the Oklahoma BBB I was assured Ford would correct the problem. Fomoco sent a Texas rep to my work location to put the most recent fix on the vehicle. Following this fix, we continued into a dry spell, but as fate would would have it, I was in a heavy rain within the next 2 weeks and the problem reappeared. This time my wife was in the vehicle with me. She thought I had run over something because the action of the pickup was so violent. I've occasionally seen letters to the editor of motor trend's "truck trend". other people describing the exact thing I've experienced driving this same type vehicle (early model ecoboost V-6, those built prior to April 2011, I believe). I have a huge file from the time when I was trying very hard to get this corrected, dealerships, dates, times, correspondence, Ford tech bulletins, but I refuse to waste my time with you unless you contact me acting as if something might seriously be done. ([xxx], or E-mail, [xxx]). I have enough to prove my vehicle has serious problems and fomoco admitted it. A transcript of my meeting with them through the Oklahoma BBB. Loss of significant power under slight to moderate acceleration, engine shutters violently, shakes and miss-fires. Check engine light flashes. Engine seems to run on 50% power loss, letting off accelerator for awhile then engine seems to recover temporarily until additional power is needed. Unable to have any confidence to pass any vehicles on grades. Quite possible for complete power loss under full acceleration as the engine misses so bad that it actually slows down and looses RPM's. I have owned this truck since new. Symptoms started in dry climate, no rain and have continued to get worse as I have entered into rainy areas with humidity.

Went on a 350 mile trip, I was at a stop light and when I went to accelerate the truck lost all power. I have one of the ecoboost engines. The engine did fix itself and I continued with no other problem, this is the first time I experienced this problem. 2011 Ford F150 king ranch.

2011 Ford F150 ecoboost - purchased July 2011. When accelerating to pass traffic or merge into traffic. The vehicle shudders and shakes violently losing all power, the check engine light flashes the goes to solid. This was taken back to Ford dealership mechanics in Florida and Kansas 3 times now with no fix action in place. During a road trip in July 2013, (after a trip to Ford) we couldn't use the cruise control due to traveling over hills would cause the vehicle to lose power constantly to the point where some hills were almost impossible to drive over, vehicles behind me were honking and complaining as it barely made it up hills.

Six months after I bought my truck I noticed a shuttering and hesitation while I was on the highway. The shuttering happens when I am cruising at 55-60 mph. More noticeably when the truck is climbing a slight incline on the road while lightly accelerating to maintain 60 mph. I had the dealer look at it 3 times in the last 2 years. The first time they reprogrammed the transmission and the computer. It did not solve the problem. Brought it back the second time and I went for a ride with the technician and he noticed the shuttering. He said there was no engine light and no codes to find out what the problem is. Finally the third time they said Ford is aware of the problem and there engineers are trying to find a solution. I also had problems with my transmission. I was slowing down to come to a stop and the transmission downshifted so hard I thought I got rear ended by the vehicle behind me.

Spring of 2012 acceleration failed when overtaking a slower vehicle. My speed was about 60 mph. This happened on more than one occasion. 06/10/13. Vehicle engine began missing and vibrating when accelerating at any speed. I was driving about 45 mph. Have sent the pickup to the dealer for inspection/repair.

Vehicle began shuddering heavy between 40mph and 50mph. Requiring me to depress the gas pedal heavy to avoid the shuddering, its almost impossible to drive my vehicle at 45 mph (which is the speed limit in most of the area I drive in). This occurrence is when 5th gear changing to 6th gear, which is typical between 45 mph. Not sure what damage this is doing to my vehicle, let alone the safety risk this may be causing. I have had the vehicle in the dealership at lease 6 times for this issue and with no results of the issue being resolved. Just the run around and false promises. 2011 F150 5.0 motor and 3.55 gear ratio.

I have had the stall and/or shudder problem several times. By far the worst is the date and items listed in the incident information. While attempting to pass another vehicle on a two lane highway, after driving in a steady downpour for at least an hour, my ecoboost F150 fell flat on its face. No acceleration at all. It just stalled and the check engine light came on. I let off the accelerator and tried again with no reaction from the motor. I then feathered the throttle and was able to get around the other vehicle. The truck would run as long as I didn't try to accelerate quickly. Luckily there were no oncoming vehicles in the other lane. With dryer weather the problem disappeared. Since that time I have had it shudder a few times when trying to accelerate. Mostly in damp or humid conditions.

Ford ecoboost. Vehicle has few issues. First there is unexpected hesitation when pulling out in traffic. You are without power and subject to being run over. There are times when at highway speeds the engine goes limp when accelerating leaving you in traffic subject to being run over. Ford has replaced the cac and this has not happened since. When at speed and you accelerate a small amount, the engine will misfire and run rough. The lack of throttle response leaves you vulnerable when passing. Been at the dealer 5 times for these problems.

While driving at a constant speed you could not increase in speed. The engine would only shutter until I stopped and restarted the engine. This happened a number of times, at three different time it put me in danger while in heavy traffic. It would not allow me to increase speed to get out of danger only come to a complete stop at the side off a busy interstate. I found a service bulletin from Ford and they installed the new vain in the turbo. This helped the problem but it really hurt the fuel mileage after that.

Vehicle bogs while moderately accelerating onto the interstate while pulling a trailer with a load under 3,000 pounds. It seems as if the engine is stuck on the rev limiter. There is minimal power available and it is very dangerous. I did not buy a powerful truck in order to experience this.

New 2011 ecoboost V-6 F150 super-crew auto 6 speed transmission with the engine in manual shift 1st gear cold engine the accelerator sticks at what ever RPM's you are running and will start going faster without foot on pedal I have had to date 10 run aways and Ford won't or can't fix it. The only way to stop it is to slam on the brakes and turn key off.....if your in traffic it could cause a serious accident. It also may cause serious damage to transmission and engine...

While braking to enter right hand turn in 2011 super crew FX2 F150 fuel sloshed causing engine to seize and power steering to shut off requiring hard break after loss of control of vehicle along with movement of the vehicle to level ground and restart of engine. Fuel level at time of incident was aprx 5.3 gallons or aprx 1/5 of a 26 gallon tank. First incident at 600 miles, multiple incidents at 1600 miles, 2100 miles, 2500, 2800, and 3000 miles. Incident also occurs while nose down on anything above a 0% gradient. Also causes loss of control of vehicle. Ford advises that this is a known safety concern but there is no correction, advise was to always keep fuel levels above quarter tank at all times per advise of regional Ford service manager and town East Ford service department. Advised that fuel level indicator can't be relied on below this level (quarter tank) also advised by Ford that the safest level to maintain fuel level at was half tank. This failure does have the potential to and frequently does cause loss of control of vehicle. Ford also advises that this is an issue with all 2011 F150's and should be treated as normal. Additional information including photos, videos, and service records avail to NHTSA along with correspondence with Ford engineering department and service.
