F-150 Lightning

  • miles
Driving into the office today I was stopped at a stoplight. When it turned green I started to accelerate when a error came up on the screen saying the vehicle needed to be serviced immediately and the vehicle reduced power (<15 mph) in the middle of a busy road with a speed limit of 55 mph. In the FordPass App I got a message saying "Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power" What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request" Powertrain How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Yes, I was unable to go faster then 15 mph in a 55 mph zone while trying to move the vehicle to the side of the road. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? There are over 600 incidents reported of this problem by other F150 Lightning Owners in [XXX] that are compiled in the attached spreadsheet. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear" No warning lamps/messages were on before the failure happened. I bought the pickup used last Friday and the problem happened today for the first time after putting more then 500 miles on it this week. I was driving on the busiest section of interstate in my city which goes up a bit of an incline. I was in the left lane. As I was going up the incline, the RPMs on my truck jumped way up and then I lost all power. My dash lit up with a red message saying "STOP SAFELY NOW" and I had no propulsion at all. There is no shoulder on the left side of this interstate and very little shoulder on the right. I had to whip over across 2 lines with zero power while I was losing speed, almost getting run into by 2 separate tractor trailers who both had to slam on their brakes and honk at me. I made it to a tiny section of shoulder up against a large retaining wall. It was so tight that the only way I could get out of my truck safely was through the passenger door, and then it would only open halfway before hitting the wall. Thankfully, our state's DOT emergency vehicle showed up about 15 minutes later to help mitigate traffic. I had to have the truck towed and it is now in the shop. Ford has known about the issues with the CDF drums in these trucks for a long time and have an associated TSB for it: 24-2176. It's a transmission issue, and there is already a class action lawsuit against Ford over the 10R80 transmission. This is the most dangerous situation I have ever been put into in my decades of driving. Ford is negligent in this by acknowledging that there are potentially catastrophic issues with their transmissions and doing nothing to remedy them on their dime. Over the months prior to this, I had minor issues in 8th, 9th, and 10th gear where occasionally the transmission felt like it "slipped" slightly. A service engine warning would pop up, but it would go away after the truck was restarted and the issue wouldn't pop up again for weeks. The Ford service people back in February claimed they had fixed it when I took it in by reprogramming a module.

I have received "High Voltage Battery Warnings" on 3 separate occasions (5/5/24, 5/9/24, 7/14/24), each time being told to stop the vehicle as soon as possible. On each occasion, once the vehicle is stopped it is bricked and cannot be driven at all. Fortunately, each of the three times I was able to stop the vehicle in a safe place. However, if others are experiencing the same issue, they may not be able to stop in a safe place. Furthermore, Ford has failed twice to fix the High Voltage battery issue, and the vehicle is currently at the dealer trying to resolve the issue for a third time. The fact that Ford does not know how to resolve this repeating issue is a large safety concern for two main reasons. First, as the high voltage battery is the main power unit for the propulsion system of the car, and with Ford clearly unaware of what or how to fix the issue, the car is at risk of stopping at any time or location. Second, the dealership working with Ford to fix the car mentioned that the repairs were taking a long time because Ford indicated that the High Voltage from the battery may be discharging into other components of the vehicle, e.g. frame, door panels, etc., and so they had to proceed with extreme caution. With Ford failing to resolve the issue at least two time, there may be a risk of very high electric current coming in contact with the driver or passengers in the vehicle. It would be shocking if that were to happen.

Starting at roughly 2000 on the odometer the truck began shifting very harshly, missing gears, slipping gears, lurching forward during shifts. Upon acceleration through the first four or so gears, there is a very loud "thunking" sound presumably upon shift. There have been 4-5 times I was turning across traffic at a safe distance, and the truck would not accelerate, missing several gears. I was almost hit hard several times because of the truck failing to drive. Dealership turned me away 3 times, saying they would not be able to diagnose anything without a CEL code. Since the truck doesn't throw any fault codes they would not take it in for troubleshooting or attempt to reproduce the issue. The issues were reproduced by a local shop I took the truck to for a third party opinion. The loud thunk was thought to be too low a lubricant level on the slip yoke where the drive shaft meets the transmission. The shop checked and there was sufficient lubricant. They reproduced the thunk sound driving slowly with several technicians witnessing the issue standing within sight distance. These known and reproducible issues with the 10R80 transmission and there have been an exorbitant number of reports of this behavior in owner message groups, all with the same lack of resolution. Dealerships either don't fix the issue, won't troubleshoot without a CEL code, or say the transmission is working as designed.
