My 2000 Ford Windstar lost it's brakes for a moment from the resulting leak at the deactivation switch attached to the master cylinder. After consulting my local mechanic. We discovered brake fluid all over the engine compartment. This would have probably resulted in a fire if brakes had not failed for a moment. I taken the correct action and had the switch replaced but I'm not confident in this vehicle any longer I've since looked on the internet and found this is a large safety issue which is still under investigation.

There is an existing recall (Ford) on many cars and trucks - involving the speed control deactivation system. Well, mine quit working a year ago. Since then - I've had to put brakes on the vehicle (more than once). I now have to fill the brake fluid reservoir with fluid every 2 - 3 days. If I don't, the brakes quit working. The pedal goes all the way to the floor. This brake system (and loss of fluid symptoms) are the same ones as the voluntary recall (leaking brake fluid - could cause a fire). I called Ford and they will not honor a free fix, because the vehicle (a 2000 Windstar) does not qualify (not sure of the reason). They also said that there is nothing they can do to help me. I have to pay for the repair (bad switch / leaking fluid) myself. My question to you is: Why is the Windstar line of vehicles not part of the recall? Ford could not answer that for me.

I have a 2000 Ford Windstar which had an electrical fire due to a faulty brake pressure deactivation switch. I turned the key on and a huge ball of white smoke came out all over the vehicle. Myself, my wife and my children were in the car inhaling these toxic fumes. I hope inhaling these fumes don't cause any future health risks. Thank god my van did not explode and we were able to exit out safely. Ford should really take a look at this problem. I will never purchase another Ford vehicle.

Cruise control stopped working, heat went out, odometer stopped working, speedometer stopped working, rear blowers stopped working, rear wiper stopped working, brake light came on. We replaced the brake fluid and changed the pads, this seemed to fix the problem momentarily but then the brakes stopped working again and the gas hand began to move slowly also. The brakes squeal really bad when stopping and turning and they have to be pressed to the floor in order to make the van stop.

I have a 2000 Ford Windstar. The ABS light on the dash intermittently comes on and stays on until I shut off the ignition. This has been a problem for about a year. I finally had a mechanic hook up a diagnostic scanner and read the error code, which is C1185 (problem with the electronic control module). Doing an internet search I find this is a very common issue for the 1999-2003 Windstar. Looks like Ford needs to do a recall of this component.

My ABS brake light came on, but all of my sensor lights have been malfunctioning. They couldn't find anything wrong; just said it was a bad sensor. Then the cruise control quit working. Last week my brakes locked up on me and I almost hit a school bus. I took the van in and the mechanic said there was a leak in the break line caused by the electrical system that caused everything to fail that had been recalled by Ford. We contacted Ford and they said there was no recall they said they only recalled this part on F150S. This is a major problem the mechanic said. We had two fuses to blow the horn won't work; the electrical system is going haywire. The thing that concerns me the most is the brake system, but they say it is all related. We are having it repaired now. When I locked up my brakes I balled two brand new tires so now I have to buy two new tires that are less than 4 months old, because Ford refuses to fix this problem.

While driving the ABS and brake light came on, the odometer displayed only dashes. After doing a google search, was able to identify the problem as a leaking brake pressure deactivation switch xw7Z 9F924 ba. Switch was replaced along with #10 fuse and all problems resolved. Internet research provide the link to this site for reporting.
