Fuel level sensor failure. Fuel gauge fails to go past 1/4 tank.

I own a 2005 GMC Envoy and the gas gauge sensor has stopped working. I believe there should be a recall on this problem because it has happened to a lot of these vehicles.

The fuel sensing system has failed. The first symptom was a fuel gauge registering 0 and a check fuel level message after I had just filled the tank. For a period of time, the gauge would slowly climb to slightly above half full, but often return to 0 with the message occurring whenever stopping the car or on engine startup. Now the gauge seldom goes above a quarter full, even though I typically keep the tank more than half full. I am able to estimate fuel consumed using the trip odometer, but this is not satisfactory. This has been going on for a year and the dealer is unwilling to accept responsibility for fixing it.

Our 2005 GMC Envoy has always had a faulty fuel gauge and has caused our family to be stranded a few times without gas while traveling far from home. We took it into a GMC dealer who wanted $ 950 for parts and repairs. We just don't have that kind of money. GMC has always been aware of this problem and has not offered to fix it nor have a recall on this faulty gas gauge. 856,000 GM SUVS under investigation for faulty fuel gauges federal regulators are investigating 865,000 General Motors SUVS, including the 2005- "07 Chevrolet trailblazer and Buick rainier, for faulty fuel gauges that are inaccurate. The 2005-?06 Chevrolet trailblazer ext, the 2005-?07 GMC Envoy, the 2005-?06 GMC Envoy and the 2005-"07 Saab 9-7X are also affected vehicles being investigated.

Fuel level sensor reads full and goes to empty back and forth and turns on check engine light. This occures with any amount of fuel in tank full to empty. Has not been repaired as GM will not stand behind parts. My concerne is with check engine light on how will I know if something else is to fail, such as brakes ext. Talked to GM complaint dept. And was told they had no knowledge. Yea right. Seems most GM SUV's are having the same problem.

I purchased this car used with approximately 24,000 miles in 2006. Within a year of purchasing the car the cluster panel (gauges) stopped working. I took the car in to have it checked and was told that there was no recall and that it would cost approximately $700 to repair as the entire cluster panel would have to be remove and replaced. After talking with co-workers with the same vehicle experiencing the same problem; I later discovered that there had been a recall on this issue but you had to be the first owner of the vehicle. After having the cluster panel repaired, my gas gauge has stopped working and I am told that the entire tank has to be removed for repair and that there has not been a recall on this issue either. The window and door lock system on the front passenger door also is non-operational. This vehicle seems to have several minor electrical issues but I am most disturbed by the fact that after spending the money to have the cluster panel fixed my gas gauge is still not working properly.

When I fill the gas tank, the gauge goes to empty and stays there for a while until it finally seems to correct itself but I am unsure if it is correct at all times and afraid it will show there is gas and run out. I have seen where several of Envoy owners are having the same issue. I feel GM should make correct these sensors.

In 2008 the gas gauge to my 2005 GMC Envoy stopped working. I would fill up the tank and the reader would not move at all. It always showed empty. I took it to a mechanic and they told me it would cost $900 to fix. I ran out of gas several times on the freeway and streets. This is very dangerous. Are these no recalls for this issue? seems like alot of other owners are having the same issue.

Fuel gauge started going from full to empty (after filling), and now it pretty much is in the empty position even with the tank full. Vehicle has 79K miles. Low fuel warning lamp and sound are engaged.

The contact owns a 2005 GMC Envoy. The contact stated that the fuel gauge displayed erratic readings. When the fuel tank was empty, the fuel gauge would indicate that fuel was present in the tank. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who stated that they would have to replace the fuel sensor. There were no recalls or warranties addressing this failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 70,000. The VIN was unknown.

I filled my gas tank up to full around 2 months ago. After I was done, I started the vehicle, and noticed the gauge dipped to empty and showed that I was low on fuel. I went in and had the attendant verify that indeed I did have gas dispensed into my tank. The gauge continued to fluctuate for the next few days, and ever since has shown empty to 1/4 or 3/8 of a tank, never showing the same reading for more than a few minutes at a time. I have a family and do worry for their safety. There is no way of knowing truly how much gas is in there at any given moment, and the cost is way to steep to repair. I have spoken to multiple GM dealers and customer service reps, and have found that they like to pretend that this has never happened to anyone before. Very uncooperative. My concern is for myself of course, but also for those purchasing these vehicles used from private parties without being notified of this acute and widespread parts failure, which indeed must be defective if it is happening to so many. Safety is of course the biggest issue here, and GM should take note.

Faulty fuel gauge. After filling up tank with gas, fuel gauge reads empty. After some driving, fuel gauge indicates a changing level of fuel with the range indicator fluctuating from 0 to ~114 miles left. Usually gauge reads 0 regardless of how much fuel is in the tank, but sometimes it will indicate a higher reading than what the tank actually holds. This issue has caused 1 incident where the vehicle ran out of fuel while the gauge indicated there was still fuel in the tank. I believe the problem to be with the sending unit on the gas tank.

The fuel gauge on my 2005 GMC Envoy reads empty and the warning light comes on when there is plenty of gasoline in the vehicle. I can fill the vehicle up, or only put $20 in, and the fuel gauge will still fluctuate between empty and the amount of actual gas in the vehicle. It reads empty most of the time. This is very frustration as a driver never really knows how much gasoline they have in their tank.

I bought a 2005 GMC Envoy roughly 2 years ago with 67K and am experiencing issues with the fuel sensor. When I fill up with gas the sensor reads tank as empty directly after and seems to fluctuate to whatever it wants the rest of the time. Upon researching the internet with this issue it appears that several other consumers are having the same problems and GMC is not willing to help because it's not a safety risk. I personally do see this as a safety risk, if you don't pay proper attention you could run out of gas and be stranded anywhere. When I found the link to this website and form and thought it was worth a shot to hopefully get this issue resolved for myself and the many others that spend their hard earned money on these vehicles.

My husband filled the Envoy with gas, and when we drove off we noticed the gas gauge was reading empty. We thought that maybe the pump was defective and we hadn't actually pumped gas, so we drove a few miles down the road to another gas station to see if we could get more gas. We were only able to pump less than a gallon, so we figured out the gauge wasn't reading correctly. After driving about 45 minutes the gauge slowly moved from empty to half full, would drop back to empty at random points (sometimes while stopped, sometimes while driving). Ever since this time our gauge has fluctuated wildly, reading empty the majority of the time, but occasionally moving about from a quarter full to half then back to empty. We have not attempted a fix as we cannot afford anything extra at this point due to my husband being diagnosed with a terminal disease and the resulting medical bills piling up.

2005 GMC Envoy - gas gauge malfunction - the gas gauge will register empty even though you just filled up the tank. After you drive for several miles it starts to register slowly, but does not register accurately.
