Envoy XL

The tachometer and speedometer do not work. While driving to work in a construction zone, my speedometer began malfunctioning. While traveling with other commuters, my speedometer read that I was traveling 85 mph. The tachometer has been out for several months. After calling the dealership, they informed me that this is common in my vehicle.

Own a 2004 Envoy XL. Speedometer stuck maxed out at 100+ mph. Had to have the instrument panel replaced. Quite a shock when you look down and think you are going 100. Should be part of recall.

Envoy XL 6-cyl

  • 49,600 miles
The speedometer on my 2004 GMC Envoy XL malfunctioned. Its readings are very erratic and do not correspond at all with the speed of the vehicle. For example, readings of 10 mph while driving on the interstate with the flow of traffic and 100 mph while stopped at a traffic light. The readings vary anywhere from O mph to past 120 mph and are completely unrelated to the vehicle's speed. This failure occurred suddenly. The first sign was the speedometer sticking at 10 mph even as I accelerated; it then began the erratic behavior mentioned above. As a consequence, it is impossible to determine the speed at which this vehicle is traveling. This was especially concerning to me since this failure occurred as I was traveling home from Indiana to South Carolina with my wife and 3 children in the vehicle. This occurred yesterday and has not been repaired at this time.

The speedometer/tachometer in my 2004 GMC Envoy read inaccurately. The needles read way off of where they should be (ie. Reading 45 mph at idle and tach at 8,000 rpms at idle).

Engine, check gadges light appears, SUV stalls, radio lights and steering lights keeps failing. I have taken my 04 envoyxl into the dealership over 7 times for the same problem in which they have not yet been able to fix/resolve. My envoyxl check engine and check gadges lights keep popping on and the vehicle continues to cut off/stall the dealership has not yet fixed the problem, I have taken the SUV in over 6 times for this problem. From 2004 until now 2007 the problem continues. The lights on the dash board keeps going out. They have replaced the lights at least 2 or 3 times but they keep going out. These lights are on the radio part, the buttons which operate the radio and switches the station. The panels seems to get very hot. The lights are currently out now after being replaced 3 times and now the vehicle is out of warranty. The paint on the SUV is very dull and the leather on the 2nd row seat is cracking, completely worn and very cheap. I complained to the dealership 1 year after I purchased the vehicle that the leather is worn out too fast, nothing was done about the 2nd row leather seats. The paint on the exterior is dull and spotty, I complained to the dealership before the 36,000 mile warranty expired and nothing was done about the paint either. This SUV is a lemon, it continues to cut off although many attempts has been made to repair the problem, I think they should buy this vehicle back since it can't be fixed. There is a defect in the electrical system since these lights on the instrument panel continues to wear out very fast and the radio had to be replaced already but the lights continues to blow out on the instrument panel and the steering wheel which also controls the radio and other components.

The speedometer has become erratic on my 2004 GMC Envoy xuv. I was told by a dealership it will require replacement in the range of 300 dollars just for parts. This appears to be a manufacturing defect that conveniently appears shortly after the expiration of the warranty. From web posts it is obviously a widespread problem that should be addressed by the manufacturer. I have recently received a speeding ticket and my inspection is due!!!!!

I have a 2004 GMC Envoy (under 26,000 miles). I have noticed that after the SUV runs for about 1/2 hr the speedometer will display my speed being below zero. In reality I am going about 50 mph. The speedometer is being acting very erratic. Is there anything the GM can do for this problem. I am in the process of talking to the dealership where I purchased the vehicle. I have read about the similar problem to other Envoy owners on the internet. I have also seen the same issue in other GM brands. I think GM should recall 2004 Envoy for this problem.

Speedometer doesn't work. It will jump around and stick on any given speed and remain there. Sometimes when the vehicle is restarted it will decrease 5 mph from the point at which it was last positioned. I cannot regulate my speed without the speedometer and afraid that I will cause an accident. It has not been fixed.

The one "electrical" part that controls the instruments that give the speed of the car, rpms, gas, oil, ect....all gauges do not work. There has been no recall on this yet with GMC, I have a 2004 GMC Envoy and this problem started to occur right after the 60K mile mark. This is a true "danger"...I have no idea what speed, how much gas, what my engine is doing...nothing...the dealerships want anywhere from $400 to $600 to fix this problem. This is a true mechanical defect. The service manager at one of the local dealerships, said that GMC has a real problem....they have to replace this one part often. Its something they see often. I want GMC to recall this part and fast...I need my gauges to work.
