  • 42,800 miles
On 02/12/2020, I was turning turning to park in a parking spot at work when the radio and other electrical components shut down, and the steering wheel jerked in the opposite direction. I temporarily loss control of my own steering wheel. This occurred 3 times while trying to park. In addition, a message about stabilitrack appeared. It is well known that GM has recalled over 1,700,000 vehicles with this same power steering issue stating that owners will lose control of the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a crash. See NHTSA campaign number: 18V586. GM's own number for this recall is 18289. However, GM has only included certain vehicles in this recall, mainly 2014 and 2015. My 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 is currently not included in GM's recall even though the same power steering problem is occurring. According to a notice published with the nhtsc, the trucks may experience a temporary loss of electric power steering (eps) assist followed by a sudden return of eps assist. The issue, GM says, occurs typically during low-speed turning maneuvers. If eps assist is lost and suddenly returned, the driver could lose temporary control of the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a crash. GM says it first became aware of the issue in Feb. 2017 after receiving customer complaints related to loss of eps. Tests conducted between April and may found that some of the vehicles contained electrical issues that could cause loss of eps. The carmaker was to contact affected owners & dealers will perform a reflash of the eps module software. GM stated that newer vehicles contained recalibrated software and will not have this issue. GM is incorrect in it assessment since I have just experienced the same power steering issue in my 2016 Sierra, & now the dealer does not want to repair the issue since there is no GM recall on 2016S. There is definitely a problem with power steering on 2016S.

The contact owns a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed several gauges became inoperable. The driver information system illuminated a code and the power steering ceased. The contact stated that the failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to young Buick GMC dealer. (2010 E main St, owosso, mi 48867, (888) 399-4101) on eight occasions however, the technician was unable to provide a cause for the failures. In addition, the contact stated that while driving, the stability trac activated and pulled the vehicle to the right side of the road at 50 mph in inclement weather. An audible chime was heard before the power steering ceased. The brake also failed to operate as intended. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer but was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided a case number. The failure mileage was 80,000.

I received a warning message on my digital dash display which indicated "service power steering" and my power steering stopped working completely. It was impossible to steer the vehicle and I had to have the vehicle towed for service. The vehicle was parked at the time the warning came on. The mechanic will be evaluating the vehicle in the morning.

Power steering stopped working for 2 seconds while I was driving. I suddenly felt steering being heave and losing control and brakes was not working at the same time. Luckily I was going slowly around 20 mph in neighborhood. It could have been worst if I was in free way.

I was waiting on the oncoming traffic so I could make a left turn. I had plenty of time to make my left turn in front of oncoming traffic, as I proceeded to make my turn all if a sudden my steering wheel locked up, stability trac light came on, my power locks locked and unlocked intermittently and truck engine died. I had to restart engine and it did it again as I was moving attempting to finish my turn. This happens on a regular basis now anytime I have to turn steering wheel it locks up and does this. Sometimes it does everything I stated above but engine doesn't die. This is dangerous. A couple times when it does this my truck doesn't have any power to start but wait 30 seconds to a minute, power will restore and you can then start it up. It almost sounds exactly what is happening that the 2015 GMC 1500 are being recalled. This happens now on a daily basis.

I purchased my 2016 GMC Sierra sle double cab on 9/13/2016. My truck begins to vibrate/shake at 40 mph and gets progressively worse to 70 mph. The shake can be felt in the drivers seat and floor. The center console shakes and shudders making me feel nauseous and dizzy while driving at hwy speeds. I returned the truck to the dealer within the first 500 miles. The wheels and tires where forced balanced with no relief and then all four tires were replaced. The wheels and tires I purchased with the vehicle were a dealer add of GM 22" wheels and tires. The vibration was not as apparent after the new tires were put on but now that I have put an additional 1700 miles on the truck, the vibration and shake is back as originally reported. During a 3 hour road trip on 11/2/2016 I had to stop and let my passenger continue the trip because I was ill from the shaking and vibrations. My sales person initially told me that what I was experiencing was how 22" wheels feel. I had a 2012 Silverado lt Z71 and a 2014 Silverado lt that had large wheels and I did not have. Any shaking or vibrations. I have made another appointment with another dealer to seek relief.

One day the power steering wouldn't work at all for several trips. I would turn the truck on and a service warning message would display stating "have your power steering serviced" the next day the power steering quit working while in the middle of a turn. Received the same warning as I received several times the day before.

This vehicle suffers from the notorious Chevy shakes that is aflicting 2014/2015/2016 GM 1500S. I returned truck one business day after buying it for shaking problems. The shaking/vibrating was felt in the steering wheel, gas pedal, and seat of your pants. They said tires were out of balance. Picked up truck to find it still did it the next time out at high way speeds 55-70 mph. 2nd trip to the dealer for shaking they said tires needed balanced and I had 1 bad tire they replaced. Took truck on another highway trip and problem was still there, shaking same as listed above. 3rd trip to dealer fror same thing, they said tire they installed as a replacement was bad? replaced tire and said truck is fixed. Took truck on highway same speeds still shakes. Vibrating/shaking steering wheel numbs your hands while driving an hour or more on freeway, shakes felt from seat make my 12 year old daughter feel like shes going to throw up if she doesnt get out of truck, wife gets headaches from it and on 2 trips of 2.5 hrs in duration I was physically ill and had to go to bed. The shaking vibrating is like riding upon a massage chair or vibrating motel bed, its horrible. On line there are published articles easily found if you google Chevy shakes and just read the complaints. Ive submitted the required 4th repair attempt to GM before I can and will lemon law mine but a much bigger preoblem is going on that isnt being looked at with these trucks. www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2016/03/the-mysterious-Chevy-shake-is-affecting-pickup-trucks-now-too.html

I purchased a new GMC Sierra from royal automotive GMC in vestavia, al on May 12, 2016. Since the time of purchase, there has been a vibration present, and noticeable at speeds above 60 mph. I have taken the vehicle in to royal three times and they have yet to remedy this issue. While obviously annoying, the issue causes me headaches, and I question whether it could lead to safety issues. I'm currently working directly with GM on the issue, but there is still no resolution.
