Having the same problem as many have listed for this year and make. Have owned 4 Honda's, have never had an issue with one until now. Sounds like Honda is sweeping this one under the rug. I called a Honda dealer to get his opinion. He said to nurse it, don't change the tranny oil, and if you have to, only drain and refill. He knew exactly what the problem was and said it would be $4500 to fix. I don't think the car is would be worth that to sell outright, if it didn't have the problem, and it is in good shape! Well, Honda, it looks like this is the last one I will be buying! I would love to build an Electric Vehicle, maybe this one would be a good candidate.

Bought the car used from the original owner. The transmission did not "act up" when I test drove the car and the owner told me he knew of no problems. SHAME on me for not taking it to a good mechanic to have evaluated before I bought it. Wonderful car otherwise.

This is a real problem shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I can't be sure when it will give out entirely, therefore, I only use the car for short commuter trips and to/from nursing school.

Bought this from a used car dealership. Supposedly they did an inspections and so forth. Just frustrating that a year later the transmission is now going to cause problems.

Rough shifting noted at 60,000 miles. Dealership in Arizona could find nothing wrong after several years and many complaints. Had car checked again prior to moving from Arizona to Oregon, THEN they said the bands were slipping and I needed a new transmission for several thousand dollars. I did not have the money so I drove to Oregon with the bad transmission. Saving money now to probably get a new transmission. Current odometer reading is 85,500 miles. This was my first Honda and almost certainly my last!
Update from Apr 11, 2011: Arizona dealership went to bat for me requesting a minimal charge transmission repair. I received a call from California (Honda customer relations) advising me my car was out of warranty and they could do no more for me. I have finally given up and plan to sell the vehicle in the near future. My next car will NOT be a Honda.

The transmission on my 2001 Honda Accord is starting to be a nightmare! The transmission started slipping going around corners a few months ago. Now at 146,000 miles it slips between 1st and 2nd and also between 2nd and 3rd we took it to a few Transmission places in Tucson and the mechanics told us that 2001 was a bad year for Honda Accord transmissions. I have spent around a $100 dollars on diagnostic services and I have received quotes of $2000 to $3000 dollars to fix it. We are now having second thoughts about purchasing another Honda.

Car hesitates and jerks while shifting from 1st to 2nd when cold. Dealer said there was no warranty.

Bought the honda for reliability. Now new transmission repairs - including torque converter is not a reliable car

car all of a sudden started to rev up and not shift into gear. stuck at red lights for 10 szeconds or more trying to get the car in gear. took to honda dealer and they wanted $3,500 to fix, offering me $2,000 for the car(worth $6,400 blue book). took to independent transmission man and got it fixed.

I was going to get lots of work done to my car since i have 125,000 miles on it, including: a new timing belt and water pump, but now I don't know what to do since the transmission is really rough during shifting. I can really hear and feel it shift; if i take off slow and let it get through shift and let off of gas when it starts to shift it's not to bad. I guess i will let it do its thing now and see how long it will last me, glad i saw this site thanks to all your stories. I will buy a different car someday, but not a Honda though, and i thought they were so great!

I love that dealers can never replicate the problem. sounds suspicious.

Car worth $3325 for trade in according to kbb. Doubt I can get that. Dealers want $3824 to fix my death trap. No "goodwill" being offered from honda. I think we should stop buying hondas. Japanese cars are going through what American cars went through in the 90's. They are no longer built to last. Buy a honda your head migh come off in a crash. Buy a toyota you might drive 100 mph into a wall. I think I am buying American from now on. At least I helped Americans with the purchase even if the car explodes.

The car suddenly wouldnt stay in drive. 72,000 miles on the vehicle, it has been well maintained.

I have a 2001 Honda Accord. Back when they announced a recall on the Transmission on this car I took it to the dealership. I was told that although there was some hesitation in the transmission it did not meet the qualifications to be replaced. Well, I let it go. As time moved on it got worse and has gotten to the point now that I can be driving and accelerate and it is like the car will not go. Almost like it is stuck. I am afraid to pull out in front of cars because I feel like the car is going to stop on me. Well, last year I sent American Honda a letter and they called and arranged for me to take it to the dealership to have it looked at. Well, like I have seen on this website they did the same thing to me. We will pay part of it, well first of all to me that is admitting that there is a problem, secondly, you need to pay for all of it. I expressed in my letter the danger of me carrying around my kids in this car and being out in traffic and the car getting stuck. That did not seem to matter much to them other than to pay a portion of the transmission. I think that Honda knows that there is a problem with the transmission of this car and refuses to fix it for all of their customers. Well, this is my second Accord and last. I am moving to Toyota. I am going to post my complaints to every website I can find until someone makes Honda take responsibility for this problem. I did not get this fixed as I feel I paid for a working transmission that I never got. SHAME ON YOU HONDA!!!!!

I've always had high respect for honda products especially their lawn mowers but no grass to mow on this Dec.day but we have 3 feet of snow and 2001 Honda 96,425 miles on it today with a bad transmission that shifts harsh when coming to a stop, I didn't think much about it, but the dealer said I need a new transmission for $2750 It has the 100,000 mile /7 year extended warrantee, the 7 years ran out but honda will pay half the expenses, Huleo at the warrantee department admitted that it was a design flaw, being this is hondas mistake we were expected them to pay it all. We are retired people and expected the car to last over 200,000 I didn't realize that honda had so many problems until checking online, honda needs to step up to the plate,we shouldv'e got a toyota.

There definitely is serious transmission problems at Honda. I received a letter from American Honda a year after purchasing the car saying they are extending my warranty coverage on the transmission for 7 yrs. or 100k miles whichever one comes first. However my transmission gave up at only 72k miles but the car was 8 yrs old. I also received a letter for transmission re-call on my 2004 EX-V6 Accord in which they did a fix, by adding an extra oil jet in the tranny. They also extended the warranty to 7 yrs. So I am expecting transmission problems on the 2004 accord also. I also previously owned a 1991 accord that had transmission problems at 77k miles.

I went to the Honda dealer because my ck engine light went on. In addition, the car was running a bit rough and I noticed that the shift from 1st to 2nd gear was rough. I thought I was in need of a tune up and possibly the transmission fluid needed to be changed. Boy was I wrong!!! They called to tell me that not only did my CO2 regulator needed to be changed (this was making the car run rough) but most importantly, my transmission needed to be replaced....AT 83,000 MILES...I was shocked....I was pissed....I gave them an earfull. I told them that I received a extended warranty (7 years or 100,000 miles) now I was 8 1/2 years and only 83,000 miles...could they do ANYTHING! They contacted the warranty dept. and the offered to pay 25%, which helped. It was that or buy a new car with 5 years of payments. I thought with a Honda that I would at least have this car without major problems for another 3-5 years....Next time TOYOTA!

Brought this 01 Accord in 03 with roughly 36K in miles, around 78K had the transmission replaced through Honda. Now around 150K it started happening again, Honda said they wouldn't repair it, would cost me out of pocket. I have been fighting with Honda to recognize their problem and to also offer some compensation or solution. Just got off the phone with American Honda and was pretty much told I was s.o.l. Basically my gripe is, if the class action lawsuit extended the warranty until 109K, since mine was replaced with the exact same faulty transmission, I should now get another warranty to 109K miles from the 78K it was replaced at. Not according to Honda, they refuse to do anything about this problem and was told without any further attention they would not look into the issue further. What I took from that was, unless your going to file another lawsuit against us, we refuse to do anything! Ok, this is fine, along with everybody else's complaint, and the beauty of choice in the US, I will no longer buy or advocate the purchase of a Honda. Its their reputation on the line, not mine! There is a reason the are no longer number 1 and Toyota has overtaken.

I have a 2001 Honda Accord with 70,000 miles, no problem in the past, has had proper maintenance but have been told the differential is bad causing the axles to be loose with possibility of falling out. I have had 2 mechanics & a transmission place to tell me this is a manufacturer defect & should never have happened especially with the mileage I have on the car. I was told Honda should fix it at no cost but the best they have offered me is for me to pay $1995 + tax. I feel this is not acceptable since they are telling me it will be about $3100 total cost for the new transmission. I have had other Honda in the past but if Honda does not make good on this, I will never buy another one & would suggest others to be cautious if Honda is not going to stand behind their product.

I bought this Honda Accord 2001 in November of 2000 thinking I was getting a car that would last me a long time. I'm forgetting to mention this was my 4th Honda, my 3rd bought new ! Last year my engine light came on and the transmission started jerking from 1st to 2nd gear, then I started noticing a spot of fluid on garage floor. I took it to my local mechanic and he replaced the axle seals and reset the computer. This fix only lasted 2 months and it was back, engine light on and the jerking. Once the car warmed up it stopped but I didn't drive it much. I had to have both of my hips replaced so I parked the car. Now I have been released to drive and I need To get a permanent fix. I don't know what to do. Called my local dealership and they said it was past the extended warranty but would love to get their expensive hands on it. I have to go in for the air bag replacement so I will talk face to face, but I'm just a number long forgot on someone's sale sheet in 2000. I'm very disappointed in Honda and to think i thought they were the best. I would appreciate any advice and/or help to get this fixed without having to take out a loan to fix my car and find a job. Good Luck to everyone out there.
