I don't have as much of a problem with the premature wear as I do with the dealerships bull excuse of that is typical wear. God I'm not a F$%#ing Idiot. Brakes, rear ones anyway should last about 4 to 5 times longer than the front. And their excuse infuriated me. And after a lot of whining then yelling they agreed to replace the pads and resurface the rotors for the cost of the pads ( no labor). But it shouldn't have cost me a dime. Honda NEEDS to figure out the problem and recall these brakes or I'll never buy another honda as long as I live and I'll trash them every chance I get. P.S. I drive almost all highway

Complain Please! Many of us seem to be having severe and constant problems with the brake wear on the 2008 honda accords. In addition to complaining on the BBB online site, file a complaint with the attorney general in your state and look up your states lemon law. For those who bought the car in Florida like myself. The lemon law states that if you have a car repaired 3 times and the car is still not working properly or the car has been out of operation for more that 15 days. The car could be declared a lemon. We all work hard for our money and bought these cars in good faith that the cars were dependable, safe and reliable. Honda knows that this is an issue but is taking their time in resolving the matter. Keep your reciepts for repairs made because at some point we got to get reimbursed. Honda should make the repairs at no cost to the consumer until the matter is resolved.

I have had my rear brakes replaced three times and my car only has 33,000 miles. Front brakes are the original brakes that came with the car.I'm waiting to hear from the BBB and I also filed a complaint with the Florida States Attorney Office and the spoken to Honda Corporate Offices. Honda has a new rep that is taking over these problems as of April 1, 2009 and I'm being told no one can assist me until this gentlemen starts his new position.

Ladies and gentlemen complain to every responsible party that can possibly do something about this matter we deserve better.

Who ever heard of rear brake failure at 14K miles in a car driven on the highway, and light braking?

I saw this site when it happened, which I'd seen it before I bought this PoS. Seeing it again on Consumerist moved me to add my post/complaint.

FYI I bought the car at Sheehy in Alexandria,VA had the work done at Ourisman in Laurel, MD if anyone cares

I too have had problems with the brakes on my 2008 V6 EX-L Coupe. Yesterday I replaced my rear brakes for the second time (the first time was in September with just over 15k miles) and I also had to replace my front brakes and have my turned since they were warped. I purchased the car on 31 January 2007, and while I've put a good amount of miles on the car in the year and a half, I find it ridiculous that I've had to do this much brake work. Given that a lot of others seem to have this same problem, Honda really should consider recalling the braking system! I think I will attempt to contact Honda corporate on Tuesday to complain.

I had same problem with my 2008 Honda Accord LX-P's rear brakes. They were replaced at 31,000 miles and cost me $210. Called Honda to report the problem and filed a BBB complaint last week. I got a call from Honda after a week and their final position is "it's normal wear and tear" and will not do anything about it.

Honda is very proud about their product and they are not listening to their customers.

This is the 3rd set of brakes. @ 15K inside rears were shot, cost to fix was $250. At 30K rears shot again and @ 48K rear inside brakes shot again. This time rotors and pads, cost $450.

Called Honda, they said they knew about this and it was the goverment's fault for making them go with a different compound. B.S... Honda's Customer service said they are working on the problem. When asked how this helps me, they said it doesn't.

Everyone should post on the http://consumerist.com/. This site gets a lot of attention but is owned by Consumer Reports. Good or Bad.

Update from Sep 22, 2009: After speaking with the VP of Honda parts and service he did tell me that they knew of this PROBELM and was working on it. This was 3 months ago. When asked about all the customers that paid for repairs he said " nothing Honda can or will do" Honda knows about this problem. He also said " We think we know what the problem and cause is" This indicates a defect and Honda should fix under warranty.

My wife told me the rear brakes in her less than 1 year old car with 12,000 miles was making a rear brake noise. At first I said NO WAY, rear brakes usually last at least twice as long as fronts, which usually last at LEAST 20,000 miles. A couple of days later she said the same thing so I took it for a ride and sure enough the rear brakes were making a lot of noise. I took it to the dealer because it was less than a year old with 12,000 miles. At first they tried to tell me it's normal for the 2008 and 2009 Accords but Honda will pay half of the $360 ! When I started to complain the manager came over and told me the whole thing would be covered under warranty. I bought a NEW Accord to save money not spend it! If I kept this car as long as the last one I would have to do 15 sets of rear brakes instead of 3. I do all of the work on my cars myself after the warranty is up and I do not want to have to look forward to spending the time and money to repairing an obviously defective braking system. I really hope that Honda recalls these cars and corrects the problem.

Add my name to the list of unhappy Honda customers. This is my 4th Honda, and the only one that has given me trouble. The dealer was nice, but could not help me. I think Honda doesn’t know how to fix the problem yet, and that is why they haven’t released a TSB. Here’s some facts on my car based on measurements taken by my Honda dealer:

Date Miles Front Rear 5/17/08 6,537 8mm 8mm 8/23/08 12,799 7mm 8mm 12/16/08 17,981 8mm 7mm 2/21/09 22,591 8mm 7mm 5/16/09 27,351 7mm 1mm

Additionally, I can say things were fine until recently when the car started making an awful sound, like I was dragging a box under the car while driving. The noise only happened when I had been driving in stop and go commute traffic for 15-20 minutes, and then traffic cleared out for me to approach normal highway speeds. The noise only came at freeway speeds, but only after driving in stop and go traffic first.

5/23/09: Rear brakes replaced @ 27,518 miles. $232.38 driveout price.

This is completely absurd. 36k miles, 32k of them are highway (I am not a braker, I tap the gas pedal mostly). Hear a grinding sound, and get told by my dealer that the rear pads are worn to metal. I fought with them only to be told to go f&&k myself, which is what American Honda said when I called them to complain. I had an 05 Corolla before this which I drove the same way, and had to change the FRONT brakes at 75k.Now I am seeing at this time 199 other people who have found this site with the EXACT same issue. Dealer is going to bang me in the a$$ for $212 because I don't have the time to do it myself before my next road trip for work. I will hit the guy if he uses the term "musta been driving with the Ebrake on" again. Don't you think I would notice that? I am filing a BBB complaint as well. There needs to be a recall on this.

Accord Coupe V6

My first vehicle that I owned was a 1987 Honda Prelude. I sold that car with 163,000 miles on it and only replaced brake pads ONCE. I have since owned 3 more Honda's and sold them before ever having to replace brake pads.

I am mortified, shocked, and astounded that I am explaining to friends, family and coworkers that my 1 year 7 month old Accord is in need of new rear brake pads.

Thank you everyone, for having the same issue and proving my point that I am not crazy! I was disgusted at how the Honda dealership attempted to show me how I should be approaching stop lights to minimize wear on my brake pads. They didn't even dare ask me if I left the E-brake on while driving, although it was implied.

Honda...all I have to say is WOW!!! Now that I have paid almost $200 for new rear brake pads, how do I stop the chirping high pitched squeal coming from my right wheel that chirps faster as I speed up and slows as I brake?

Something has to be done about your obvious disregard for a quality breaking system in this vehicle. I was the first one to drive a V6 Coupe off the lot, in October of 2007. Just wait until all the rest of your consumers start flooding in...

I heard squeaking on my rear brakes for the past 2 weeks. I couldn't imagine that I would need new rear brake pads at 26,800 miles. However, I read all of the complaints on this site prior to arriving at the dealership. So, after arriving at the dealership, they confirmed that the rear brake pads needed to be replaced. I spoke with her service tech who said that this is happening often to 2008 Honda Accords. He said that a new braking system was added to the 2008 Honda Accords. The cost for the repair was $155.00.

I called Honda Corporation today to submit my complaint and asked for further information on future recalls or for the warranty to cover the rear brakes going out so quickly. I urge you to do the same. They will give you a case number to follow up on the outcome of your complaint.

My car felt like it was rumbling when braking from significant speed. The dealer informed me that I needed my front rotors cut and my rear brakes replaced. I was shocked that my car needed rear brakes at 15K miles. This is my 3rd Honda Accord and my 2 previous vehicles (2001 & 2004) did not need brakes until at least 30K. I wrote Honda International a letter expressing my concern. They did contact me promptly but determined that the brakes were normal wear/tear and I would not be reimbursed. All I can say is, I won't be keeping this vehicle if I will be forced to pay for brakes every 15K miles. I used to PRAISE the Honda product to everyone I knew ........ that's not going to happen any longer :((

2008 Honda Accord, just one year old with 21,000 miles on it. I bought the car and immediately noticed squeaky brakes. Told the dealer they said the brakes were just wearing in. Three months later still squealing brakes, again, asked the dealer, they told me again they were wearing in. Six months later, same thing. So I go in for my oil change and tell them I hear a scratching sound in the back (REAR BRAKES).Now they tell me you have to replace the pads, cost for that $200.00 .. I called Master mechanics all over and they all said the same thing, somethings wrong with the brake system. Long story short, called American Honda called dealer they said they knew there was an issue but no recall on this. Nothing can be done. warranty no cover. That sucks. I love the car but I am not happy about replacing pads all the time..

Accord Sedan

  • Automatic transmission
  • 47,000 miles

Another one for the list. I purchased my '08 Accord last February. I have put about 47,000 miles on it in that past 15 months (95% being highway miles). About a week or so ago my left rear wheel began making an awful screeching noise. I took it into the dealership and they told me I needed rear brakes and that my left rear was "metal to metal". I explained that I did not think that I should need brakes already being that my girlfriend has a 1999 Civic with about 80,000 city miles and has NEVER needed new brakes. The young lady in the service department said that the rear brakes "have been wearing out kind of fast" but I would have to pay for the replacement. She also said that because of the problems they have been having with this brake issue they would give me a "life time warranty" after I paid for the replacement (which cost me $299.55).

I then called the Honda USA customer service number (after researching and finding this site as well as others documenting this on going issue). The young lady I spoke with said that there was nothing they could do because it was a "wear and tear" issue and not covered under the warranty. I then told her what the service department at my dealership told me about the ongoing problem with the rear brakes wearing out and that they offered me a lifetime warranty because of this. She then said that she has never heard of any dealership offering this and asked for the name of the dealership. She then said she would forward my complaint to the next level and someone else would be contacting me in 24 hours. I will keep you posted.

My 2008 Honda Accord started making a screeching noise when applying the brakes at about 22,000 miles. I even notice the problem when I am not pressing the brakes. The dealership said I needed new brakes. I have never had rear brakes go out on a car this early and I am very easy on the brakes. This is going to cost me a lot of money over the life of the car but Honda says they are not responsible because this problem is due to normal wear and tear, but this is anything but normal to have a rear brake problem this early. I have seen numerous complaints on the NHTSA website for this car so I guess I shouldn't be suprised to have this problem as well. I plan to complain to on the NHTSA.gov website and recommend others do the same. Maybe with enough complaints they will require Honda to recall the car.

Update from May 26, 2009: Brakes have been replaced at a cost of $157 and the Honda dealership so that are aware of the problem. Honda said it appears that the calipers on the rear brakes are too short but are still considering this normal wear and tear. Just as a side note, they said I broke their brake longevity record at 22,600 on my car.
