I was told that this was a typical problem, until I spoke to the sales guy who said that it was "very unusual". Then discussing this with a very business minded and car-loving friend, they said "DO NOT PAY FOR THE FIX! The premature brake wear is from a defective brake pad."

They called Honda corporate America, who did nothing, and the mechanic is claiming there is no problem. I even showed them this website and again NOTHING. Thank you Honda for changing the brakes and screwing us all!!!

I bought a Honda accord last year. Today, I have to change the rear brake pad for only 24000 miles. The front pad is still very good (about 6mm), but rear pad is worn out (0 mm). I have a very good driving habit. I normally change brakes for my Toyota around 60000 miles. I think the new model (2008) has a big design problem with the rear brake pad. I do not recommend to buy the new model of accord!

I have purchased 6 Hondas in my 17 year career. I put approximately 30k miles a year on a car. I have NEVER EVER had one brake job on ANY of my Accords or Civics. I have owned every type of trim they have. I am furious and will NEVER buy another Honda! I will tell everyone I know to never buy another Honda. Honda knows about this problem, obviously, and they are not doing anything about it. I am going to try and buy another car to get from under this brake issue. I will probably buy a Toyota or a Ford. This is enough to end my relationship with Honda. I will make a formal complaint to Honda and wash my hands of this company.

This is a major problem with Honda. All I got in response was that the brakes wear out faster on the rear than front. Seems like the company's standard reply. I've had the car for only 8 months and have all highway miles on it ( I live 90 miles from work).

When will Honda get the message?

I have a 2008 Accord, 2 door, automatic 4 cylinder with 19,100 km ....I needed the brakes replaced already? What's the normal cost in Ontario Canada?

I'm not sure if it just needs pads or more.

Accord EX-L 4 cyl

Same as all of the other complaints here. At 18k miles rear brake pad are worn out and front were fine. I had the dealership file a claim after getting all of the run around like others have posted. The service manager contacted Honda America and they acknowledged a "materials problem" with the brake pads. Honda America said their new policy was to do a brake job on cars with < 20,000 miles to replace the defective pads with a new, improved pad. Basically, the original pads are too soft. Since Honda contends that brake pads are good from 20-35k miles, they won't warrant anyone over that number of miles.

Something else of note, I understand that the 2009 Honda Accords have completely re-engineered rear brakes. Thanks to the info on this site I was able to cut through the BS and avoid the cost of an expensive brake job (pads and rotors are dealer only). It also helped that I was not one of the first to have this problem and press the issue. I am very disappointed in Honda. This should have been viewed as a safety issue and they should have issued a recall by now. Why would any normal driver expect their brakes to be shot after 18k miles!!

Well, add me to the list of dissatisfied Honda Accord owners! Unbelievable that rear brake pads would wear out so quickly. And at this point in time there are no after market pads available. This is absolutely the most disappointing vehicle I have ever owned! Not only the brake issue...but body lines were poor, doors and trunk lid needed adjustments. Loose fog light...Hard to believe the vehicle made it out of the plant!

I have 26000 highway miles on this car (purchased in Nov, '07) and need to replace the rear brakes already. This is my first Honda and I can honestly say, it will be my last Honda. This car can't compare in any way to my wife's Camry or my previous car, a 2003 Nissan Maxima. Honda should be replacing these brakes on vehicles with under 50,000 miles for free. I'm looking to trade my Accord in on another car.

I am furious!

Took my 2008 Honda Accord in for an oil change & they tell me that I need rear brakes & rotors @ 17,000 miles. Service explained that Honda redesigned the car in 2008 & the brakes are softer & smaller. I had a 2000 Honda for 8 years & loved it. (which is why I bought a new one). If I have to replace the brakes every 15,000 miles, you can be sure I will not keep this car NOR WILL I EVER BUY ANOTHER HONDA. I will harass Honda & tell everyone I know about this manufacturing defect. The dealer did give me a one time courtesy discount - but what good is that over the long term. Honda needs to address this problem as a recall if they value their reputation at all. What a disappointment in an otherwise lovely car.

I can't believe that my 40000$ car has premature brake wear. The car has only 18000kms and less than a year on it and I have to change the rear brake pads. It seems like this is a common problem so I am going to make a huge stink at the dealer. I went to one dealer who has a reputation for having horrible customer service and he told me " okay, so you're the mechanic, you should know that this is normal, you have to change rear brake pads twice for every one in the front". What a moron, I think I will add that in my complaint to Honda Canada. Everyone call and make a complaint... it will help future owners!!!

Brought the car in for an oil change and was told the rear brakes needed to be replaced because the inner pads had 20% life and the outters had 80% life. They should wear evenly so this is clearly a caliper problem. I was quoted $180+tax to replace them. I can get the pads for $45 and have my boyfriend replace them for me but that's not the point. Honda's have been known to last forever so this sucks!!

17430 miles 75%highway driving $32,000 car 13 months old and the rear brakes are shot .honda has to be sued big time . my last honda 2002 accord went to 50,000 miles before brake work needed to be done . ON MONDAY MORNING I WILL MAKE A PAIN OUT OF MY SELF WITH HONDA OF AMERICA ALSO WITH REGIONAL REPS FOR HONDA. I WILL ALSO FILE COMPLAINTS WITH THE BBB BUREAU AND THE DEALERSHIP. ALL HONDA OWNERS OF THIS MODEL NEED TO COMPLAIN NOW .IF HONDA DOES NOT ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM WITH FULL REFUNDS AND UPGRADES I WILL NEVER CONSIDER A HONDA PRODUCT AGAIN .WHEN THE SERVICE WRITER TOLD ME THAT THE REAR BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED I LAUGHED AT HIM. YOU MUST BE JOKING REAR BRAKES ON A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CAR WITH 17,430 MILES THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE.

I bought this car on 12/20/07. I started hearing a squealing noise in the rear right wheel while backing up about one month ago. I would also hear rotational clunking noise from rear wheel area while driving at local speed, increase in noise at higher speed. I sent the car to the service department of HERSON'S HONDA located in Rockville of Maryland. They checked and told me that rear brakes worn and right rear rotor damaged/distorted. I saw that the damaged rotor has big rusted area on both sides, It seems that the rusted area are not touched by the pads by a long time. I asked the manager of the service department if the rotor is factory defective. He told me that the right rear disk brake rotor appears damaged due to excessive heat and a quick cool down. They replaced the pads and the right rear rotor, machined left rear rotor. The parts cost $210.38, labor cost $302.20. Total is $548.79. I don't know what the fate of the new replaced rotor is!! Honda, what can you do to help your customer?

I just had to bring my 2008 Honda Accord in for REAR Brake Repairs. After hearing a "chain-like rattling noise" coming from the right side rear tire for about a week, I brought it to my mechanic for him to check out. After taking it for a spin, my mechanic informed me that it sounded like I needed new brakes, and assumed that they were most likely the front brakes as those are usually the first ones to go. After review, he found to both his and my surprise that it was actually the rear brakes that needed to be changed! I've only had the car for a little over a year and only have about 18,000 miles on it! Needless to say, I was not happy with having to already shell out $160 on new rear brakes for a new car! Of course I advised my mechanic to fix the problem, but after doing research and finding this site and reading everyone's posts, it seems as if I'll be fixing this problem every year!

I called American Honda's customer service number at 1-800-999-1009 and filed a complaint. Unfortunately, it is all that we can do right now because it doesn't seem as if Honda has had enough complaints from consumers to look into this issue and possibly do a recall. PLEASE call the customer service # and file a complaint if you haven't already done so. It takes 5 minutes and all you need is you VIN #.

Thanks.

So I heard a squeaking and grinding noise and figured it was my front brakes because I had just changed my back ones in May 2008. FYI I just bought my car in November2007. I went to autozone and bought the front ones. Once off, I noticed that the front ones were fine. My neighbor then checked the back ones and wouldn't you know they were cracked, worn out, and scraping the disk. Call me crazy but that would mean that I changed my back brakes twice in 1 year. I'm definitely calling the dealer and the customer service to complain. There are no recalls posted on the Honda site, which also bothers me. Especially seeing that everyone is complaining about the same thing. Then to add more wood to the fire, I have to miss work because autozone doesn't sell the back brakes. I want my money back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Accord EX V6

Have owned Honda Accords since 1981 including 2001 that I put 125,000 miles on and never replaced rear brakes. 26,000 on my 2008 and brake noise was so bad it was embarrassing to drive. Took it to dealer ( Fletcher Honda, Bentonville, Arkansas) and was of course told it was rear inside brake pads and was normal wear not covered under warranty. After much discussion and reminding them that we had purchased 4 new cars from them in last 5 years including two 2008 Accords and assuring them that we would not be buying another Honda, they told us they would fix them for free. we received paperwork from Honda the next week notifying us that it had been turned in as warranty work. I'm still both ticked off and disappointed because it's obvious that Honda knows it's a problem yet has done nothing about it and because I know that in 20,000 more miles I'm going to have to repair them again. C'mon Honda. Do the right thing!

The car had a dragging noise while driving which stopped when applying the brakes. The dealer checked and found that the rear brake pads were worn down to the wear indicator which was causing the noise. New brake pads were installed.

This wear seems excessive based on my past experience driving Hondas for many years.

So, the rear brake pads had to be replaced before one year of car ownership and less than 15,000 miles. Now at 16 months of ownership, the front brake pads had to be replaced and the front rotors turned at 18,708 miles.

This car is going through brake pads at an alarming rate compared to any Honda I have ever owned and I have owned several Honda's going back to 1980.

I bought my car on December 22, 2007. Today, March 20, 2009, I have to replace my rear brakes and have my rotors resurfaced. I feel like I can return this car and get my 1997 Honda Civic back. I have never had this problem with my 97 Civic. I paid a lot of money for this car and I feel as though I did something right for myself this time, but I guess I didn’t. I want something to be done about this problem. Honda has made a very good name for themselves, but this can and will create a problem for them. Everyone that bought this car bought it because we all have had the experience that Honda makes good quality cars, but they have really jeopardized their reputation when they created this problem for us loyal customers. I think I should have bought a Toyota Camry instead.
