Accord EX 4D 2.4L

  • 23,000 miles

Premature brake wear on the rear brakes at 23,000 miles. Dealership initially wanted me to pay the $150 for replacement, but eventually conceded $100 - leaving me $50 to pay. No good explanation was made as to why they would wear so soon, but a promise to investigate was made.

Calling Honda next to register the complaint. Ridiculous that for the time I own this car, the rear brake pads will require changing every 16 months. After all the reason you buy Honda is to avoid these issues.

this will be the third set in 53000 miles omg if i knew that was the case i would have never bought the car.. this will be our third accord and never once on any of them did we have to replace the brakes.. my wife is in sales and we buy these cars for reliability and she usually puts near 100,000 miles a year now looking at the cost of a minimum of $ 500 a year on rear brakes is just a huge pain in the ass ... her is another thing not one parts house has these in stock they better start as this will i'm sure be a huge sale for them.. Thanks Honda i definitely thought you put great product on the market but i guess we are allowed to put crap out once in awhile.. would be nice if they resolve the issue .. maybe just sale an inner pad because the outer looks brand new..

Accord LX 2.4L

  • 10,230 miles

According to many specialist, this is a problem. I manage a Honda fleet and already have experienced two cases of five.

In the first case, with just 300 miles one of them needed to change both rear disk brakes due to high vibration (disk were dis-aligned). First solution was to cut the disks; it was not accepted. Then dealer offered to change both at no cost.

The other one with 10K miles "ate" the rear brake pads. Apparently Honda knows about this situation but did not open a resolution then the dealer says that this is not covered under warranty. This is awful and unacceptable. Based on this attitude I will spend more than $800/year just on brake pads. Lets make pressure to Honda!

Accord EX-L 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 16,479 miles

The rear brakes are "down to the metal" at 16500 miles. I'm not a "stand on the brake" type user except in the rare emergency. And I've owned many other cars and have never had such a problem. The dealer says that this is considered normal wear and tear on a car with over 12000 miles, so the warranty doesn't cover it.

And since the rear tires on a FWD car wear much more slowly than front tires, doesn't it follow that the rear brakes would be much less stressed as well? Yet the fronts are fine. Something is not right here.

This isn't over by a long shot.

Accord EX-Navi 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 12,100 miles

I've been driving for over 40 years and I have NEVER replaced REAR brakes on ANY vehicle I've owned at 12,000 miles or less! Rear brakes on our CR-V are at 78,000 and still going strong (fronts were replaced at ~60,000 miles). The '97 Odyssey has yet to need any brake work.

Now, just to add insult to injury, there is a significant high speed brake judder, especially when the brakes heat up - a clear indication of warping rotors - that the dealer claims he can't duplicate. (Of course he can't duplicate it - the speed limit near the dealership is 35mph!)

I understand that Honda changed front/rear brake balance on the 2008 Accords and also softened pad compounds to address noise complaints, at the apparent expense of satisfactory brake performance - good job, Honda!

I'm yanking the OE rotors and pads off the vehicle as soon as suitable aftermarket replacements are available. I suspect the $360.00 this will cost will be money VERY well-spent, and most likely about what the dealer will charge when the FRONT brakes and rotors require replacement.

Update from Apr 8, 2010: Rear brakes need replacement again at ~26,000 miles and the rotors appear to be starting to warp, too. Had the front pads replaced and rotors turned at ~22,000 miles. I got the impression that Honda thinks I should be grateful that the front brakes lasted twice as long as the rears! There is a known brake balance problem AND a caliper problem with 2008 Accord rear brakes. Not only does the bias lead to extra rear brake loading, but as many have stated on this site, excessive inner pad wear. The rear calipers do not evenly release during braking so the inner pad continues to rub against the rotor resulting in continuous pad wear, rotor warping and the "burning" smell, all of which have been well-documented here and on many other web sites.

Update from Sep 30, 2012: Finally gave up on Honda's crappy brake parts and the dealer's disengenuous lies. Replaced the entire brake system with StopTech performance PowerSlot rotors, high performance brake pads and stainless steel brake lines. The Accord brakes have now been trouble-free for 14K miles and the repair was half what the dealer quoted for front and rear brake and rotor replacement.

The odometer reads 14,700 miles. The rear brakes started making noise, took the rear wheels and brake calipers to check on the problem and found out the inner pads on both sides are gone. I called the dealer immediately to ask if there was recall on the problem. Braman Honda in Miami Florida shut me off and technician blamed it on my style of driving. Yeah, like I go around town pulling the hand brake!!!! What a bull of crap. I had an 99 accord and drove it for 9 years and 124,000 miles, never had to replace the rear brake pads. Honda really screwed it up this time. If I can only sell it for what I own. My next car is going to be a Toyota or Nissan if they don't address this issue. I would hate to change the brake pads every year.

2008 Honda Accord V6 rear brakes worn out at 15000 miles. Honda says with the new brake system for the 2008 the rear brakes when slowing down the rear brakes do most of the work. The front brakes come in to play more on hard braking. I have a 2007 accord and replaced the rear brakes at 50000 miles three times the life of the 2008 accord. I went to three auto parts stores and nobody has rear brakes for the 2008 accord. They all tell me to go to the dealer.I believe we could have A CLASS ACTION AGAINST HONDA.

Accord EX-L 2.4L

  • 40,000 miles

I have a 2008 Accord EX-L with 40kmi. At about 30kmi I started hearing intermittent squealing from my rear passenger brakes. Last night at 40kmi I decided to inspect it. I found the inner pad of the rear rakes is worn down to the metal. The outer is still almost brand new. I have had about 6 or 8 Hondas before & have never yet experienced something like this until now. This is the most important fact I noticed when I was using the brake expander tool to push back the piston. I have to exert extra effort to turn the handle of the tool to push it piston in. This is not normal. this meant the piston is sticking thus the inner brake pads worn out. All who experience problem like this should make it clear to the mechanic about the sticking piston. No matter what they say THIS IS NOT NORMAL. SO LET US ALL WRITE HONDA TO INVESTIGATE CLOSELY & MAKE RECALL ABOUT THIS.

JUST LIKE THE RECALL THEY DID FOR THE 2001 ACURA TL'S AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PROBLEM WITH THE 2ND GEAR BURNING BECAUSE OF DESIGN ERRORS.

I also heard a funny noise coming from the rear of my 08 Honda Accord, and to make a long story short, the dealership said the rear brakes needed to be replaced before the car turned 1. I had a family member look at the brakes and he noticed there was uneven wear on the rear brakes. But the dealership said this was the way it was designed. Really? So we need to replace them every year? I don't think so.

My question is, what do we do next, as a collective group?

Chalk me up, too. Never heard squeaking, just heard crunching. When I took it in, the rotors were also shot. I had the car in in October for the 17k check-up and inspection and the rear breaks were 6 out of 12. about 6,000 miles and four months later they're shot. Go figure.

Dealership personnel were very polished explaining the car's stability assist is the cause of the problem and I was told, "This is the wave of the future." So I guess we'll have to get our brakes changed every year or so? I don't think that's going to go over to well.

This is obviously a case of over-engineering and something needs to be done.

As said before, we all need to call the complaint line so we can properly be refunded.

My brake problem on my 2008 Honda Accord was shocking, annoying and made me feel like I was in a 1998 because of the loud and incessant screeching sound they made when I stopped. Also, my husband thought I was crazy for weeks because he said no way the brakes are going bad this soon but surely it was the brakes and they cost me $150.00 out of my pocket now I see that there is something wrong with the brakes in these cars. Its a shame because even the dealership acted like I must have done something wrong and they are right I bought this Honda with brake issues from them. Sadly I love my car so whats a girl to do? Start saving up for the next 15,000 miles I may need new brakes :( If anyone is planning a class action suit I am all in. Hope if Honda is getting bailout money I can get my 150.00 back

My car also needed the back brakes fixed. I heard the scraping noise but just KNEW it wasn't my brakes because I only have 19,000 highway miles on my car. It had snowed the week before so I thought maybe there might be some cinder or salt in my wheels so I went and had it washed. Needless to say, the noise was still there. The dealership was awesome and replaced my brakes and turned and repaired my rotors but did blame "My foot" for the problem.

I didn't appreciate the fact that I was blamed but took their suggestions anyway and decided to do some investigating on my own. That is how I found this website. I have notified the dealership and given them this URL. Maybe they won't be so quick to blame the "woman behind the wheel" next time.

I am very disappointed with this car. The Maxima was the best car that I have ever owned. I would have purchased another one when I was looking but decided that since the Accord had most of the same options and was a couple thousand dollars cheaper to buy it. MISTAKE.

Add me... If only I knew this before my purchase in April of 2008. I started experiencing problem about 6 months ago when I noticed a burning smell coming from my left rear tire. They turned me away twice before sealing a loose plate, which was covered under warranty. The smell did not go away and was turned away again when I brought the car back a couple of weeks later. Two days ago my car start squealing like an 18 wheeler. I seriously did not think that a 2008 anything could produce such a sound. I take it into the shop today and they tell me I need rear brake pads and that it will cost me $149. I have called and complained to everyone I could, receiving ONLY 50% off my bill. I will not be taking my car back to Honda for the future replacements so they will not the business for there mistakes. I will not stop complaining until the issue is addressed!!!

I've basically had the same problems as everyone else. My breaks started squealing severely so I took my car in to have it checked out. They told me my rear brake pads were worn out so they replaced them and my warranty covered it (thank goodness). Then two days later, my car started making this terrible grinding sound. I took it back in to our local Honda dealership and now they have told me that my rotors were worn out completely and they had to be replaced. The warranty will cover this as well. I spoke with the technician about it and he said that he's seen this problem on a lot of the 2008 model accords they are selling. He also told me that my pads should not be wearing out at less than 17K miles, especially the rear. He also said mine was the first that he had to replace the rotors on. While he was working on the car he called Honda tech support and apparently this is something "they are looking into but they have been unable to pinpoint an exact problem." Not sure what that means because it seems like the problem is pretty obvious but maybe, just maybe, something will be done about this soon. This is ridiculous. Honda needs to step up...

Accord EX-L V6 W/ Navi 3.5L V6

It looks like I can add my 2008 Accord to the long list of premature rear brake failures and squeals. My rear brakes started to squeal at 412 miles, just 14 days after purchasing. The rear rotors were machined and the pads replaced. This worked for a short time and then it went back at 1441 miles for rear brake squeal. This time they replaced the rotors and scuffed the pads. Again at 1570 miles it was in again for squeal, except it was the fronts. They replaced the rotors, pads and calipers. Then at 2332 miles it went in again. Initially it was reported that they could not hear the squeal; however, my wife was in the car with the technician when he heard it (he even said he heard it). At that time they stated it was not bad enough to determine if it was the front or back. From 2332 miles to 16589 the brakes continued to squeal. At 16589 I took the car in again for rear brake squeal and noise. This time it was diagnosed with the inner pad worn all the way down, dust boots melted and gouged rotors (diagnosis premature rear brake pad failure). From this diagnosis they replaced the rotors, pads and calipers. After 4 days out of the shop the squeal is back. I can only guess that the rear pads will be gone around 13000-17000 miles. The service department has been very help; however, Honda customer service could use some help (as in call me back). All I want from Honda is to recognize the issue and correct it. Do not wait until the warranty is out to have a fix that we must pay for. I have even discussed this with Honda Research Engineers who say keep calling Customer Service until it is corrected (design flaw). Whatever they say, this is not normal brake. Since the Acura is on the same platform, does it have the same brake squeal issue? If not, why? I love the car except for the continued brake problems. All I want is a quality and reliable vehicle.

I took my 2008 Honda Accord to my Honda dealer in for a routine oil change and tire rotation. After I picked up my car I notice a shutter when I applied the breaks while driving at speeds over 55 miles per hour. I had to take it back to my Honda dealer and they said the rotors were warped and they made the repair and put on new breaks at no charge to me. One week later I noticed that my breaks were squealing really loud, so I took it back to the shop. They said the rear breaks were wore out and needed replacing. There were only 27000 miles on my car. The dealer wanted $199.00 to make the repair. I said no and my husband went to the Honda dealer and bought Honda recommended brakes and put them on himself. Cost $79.00 plus $15.00 for a special tool. When he took the old brakes off he noted that the outside pads showed slight wear and the inside pads were worn completely down. This indicates a caliper problem. We are keeping an eye on to see if it happens again.
