Accord EX-L 4cy

  • Automatic transmission
  • 41,000 miles

My Accord began making a wisping sort of noise when I'd accelerate every now and then. 3 months prior, I had it in for an oil change at a local store and was told my oil had been low. I change my oil every 5,000-7,000 miles. My oil lamp light flickered on and off, so I scheduled an appointment with Honda the following day. My oil was low again so they set me up for an oil consumption test. They also told me they preformed a software update that would correct the oil consumption issue.

I asked the service representative if it was normal to burn oil and he said absolutely not (as many of my co-workers, friends and family agreed to as well). I took my car back in to be tested 2,000 miles later and was told it was fine. Another 3,500 miles later I'm back to low oil, lamp light flickering and wisping noise. I go back in tomorrow for oil change.

After researching online, I imagine I'll be told that burning that much oil over 5,500 is normal according to Honda. I've shared this with those around me and mostly everyone is in agreement-- no car should be losing oil between changes, let alone a 2010 HONDA!! This is my 2cd Accord and chose Honda because I've always been told they are dependable. I was willing to pay more towards a Honda car payment because I commute 90 miles a day for work. I will not buy another Honda if this is not fixed or replaced. The thought of having engine problems down the road sickens me as does the sight of the oil lamp light flickering on at 5:30am on my way into work! And I don't appreciate the inconvenience of having to go out of my way to the Honda dealer to be checked for my oil consumption test. Obviously this is a known issue so Honda should own up and do what is right if they want to continue to depend on brand loyalty as one of their main selling points.

Update from Feb 3, 2012: I took my Accord in for the 4th time since late August 2011. I was told the clattering noise I was here was the engine starved for oil. I'm currently set up for an oil consumption test. I lost 2 quarts of oil since late November (around 4,500 miles) and was told that is about 1/3 a quart per 1,000 miles. Service rep. maintained Honda (and industry standard) is that 1 quart per 1,000 miles is normal. I was happy with my experience with the service department. They listened to my concerns and I could tell he related with me to what I was saying. At this point, I feel like all I can do is continue to go in and have them document the consumption in case a class action suit does come out of this down the road. I bought a Honda because of its reputation of being dependable. I had an '06 Accord that I loved and never had issues with. I plan to contact corporate so I can be on record with them. I was told to pull over when I begin hearing that clattering noise and top off the oil. I no longer feel I am driving a dependable car if I'm having to pull over on the highway to have to top of the oil in a 2010 model year car.

Accord Crosstour /V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 15,946 miles

Nice should have come here last year. Bought the 2010 Accord Crosstour - nice car except when engine light came on twice now while the oil life was still around 50%

They wanted to check oil consumption after the last oil change - when light came on and NO OIL registered on the dip stick. An oil life still said 50%

Well, after 1200 miles supposedly - because I was not able to see it and was not smart enough to check before hand - dip stick register full

BUT the kind service rep saw the notice dated June 11, 2011 regarding excessive oil consumption, MIL indicator on and oil life not registering a problem and they did the software update to the VCM computer.

Came straight home checked and saw the MANY complaints regarding this problem. Really going to frost my wife who talked me into Hondas - Maybe a Ford? Chevy looks nice - For sure you can forget that FIT I was looking at

Accord EX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,347 miles

As my wife was driving her 2010 V6 Honda Accord (purchased back in December 2009) down the road she noticed the engine all the sudden started running rough about the same time her engine light came on (no prior warning lights before this occurred). She pulled into nearest parking lot and notified me by cell phone. Upon arriving at her location and listening to her describe the way the car was running, I proceeded to check the oil level and was shocked to find out no oil was indicated on the dip stick. We notified the dealership where we purchased the car and have had it serviced twice in the past for oil change and tire rotation (15% oil life). While the tow truck was in route, I noticed the oil life remaining on the car's computer was reading 30%. Unaware of the oil consumption problem Honda's been having with the 2010 V6 Accord, I was thinking the service department either forgot to add enough oil or neglected to change the oil but charged for servicing anyway. Those two scenario's were not the case. While visiting the dealership the next morning, I was conspicuously told our honda accord was using oil (2 quarts low, about half full) and was shown a couple of spark plugs they removed from our engine which had burnt oil caked onto both of them. A year and a half old accord with 20,300 miles and using oil. Come on! This isn't happening to me. I've bought 2 brand new accords from this dealership in the past with no problems what so ever. I asked the supervisor how they planned to fix my problem. I was expecting them to treat me right by either installing another engine in the car or giving me a brand new one of same make and caliber since their were no recalls or warning lights letting us know that the oil level or pressure was low which more than likely caused severe damage to the mechanical parts inside the engine. No, instead, Honda technicians notified the dealership they intend to fix the problem by having the mechanics replace the #2 and #3 burnt spark plugs, topping off the oil, and having us check the oil about every 1,000 miles, just like they’ve told everyone else in the past with the similar problem. I showed the service supervisor the information I collected from this web site and told him what your about to do will not fix the problem with oil consumption nor fix the damage that has already been done to my engine. He tells me “that’s all the technician’s are telling him to do at this time”. Since I have a 60,000 mile drive train warranty on the car, I plan to check my oil for the next 3,000 miles. If at any time I notice the level to drop, I’ll take it back to the dealership to have it documented. If there is no change within the 3,000 mile observation, I plan to file a Lemon Law Claim on the vehicle according to Arkansas Lemon Law.

Accord EX-L V6

I have a problem with any vehicle that may be mechanically compromised when you follow the factory suggested maintenance schedule. I also have a problem with a known defect that is never mentioned until after the sale of the vehicle. The dealership stated that Honda tech line said oil consumption up to one quart every 1000 miles is acceptable. This means that the maintenance minder system is worthless, that the owners manual is wrong and that Honda appears to be making it up as they go along to cover their quality problems. I wanted assurances in writing that this issue would not compromise resale value or engine integrity in the long run such as excessive spark plug fouling, cylinder/valving build-up, internal emission build-up or emission testing problems in the future. So far: NOTHING. Just a recommendation that I change my oil in a time frame suitable to the amount it burns.

I find it hard to believe that with all the environmental concerns, Honda doesn't have a problem with burning a lot of oil from their sloppy-pig engines. Is this how the engines were designed? Is this how they were approved for use in the USA? If that were true or if Honda wasn't trying to cover-up/ignore the issue then it should be stated in the maintenance schedule, the owners manual and discussed during the sale of the vehicle so people can make informed decisions about how they want to lubricate their engines or trash the environment.

This is my third and final Honda. American car companies are really on the way up - that's the kind of company I want to do business with, not one that is on the way down and unwilling to stand behind their product in writing.

Have a 2010 Honda Accord sedan V-6. I bougt it new in Feb. 2010, and at 3947 miles only had 2-1/4 quarts of oil in engine. The oil pressure light never came on, but the engine light did. I took it to the dealer and had a misfire on #3 cylinder in addition to oil deposit on #2 & #3 spark plugs, which where replaced. Honda dealer thought honda corp techies would aprove new engine but they told dealer to send me on my way and have me check my oil level every 1,000-2,000 miles. What happend to Honda reliability?

Will file for lemon law WHEN problem continues!

Purchased new 2010 Accord "the one". The one that uses 1 quart oil in 2500 miles since new. Extensive contact with dealer and Honda corporate with many visits for oil consumption tests. They both admit there is something wrong but haven't got the fix. The latest is a software update that did not work as the car still using oil. (more than my lawnmower). We have finally decided to get rid of this turkey even though we will loose the depreciation on the car as we usually keep them for years. Honda NEVER AGAIN fooled me once!!

Accord EX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 10,000 miles

I PURCHASED MY 2010 HONDA ACCORD V6 NEW WITH ONLY 14 MILES ON IT AT THE TUNE OF $30,000. I DO NOT USE THE HONDA GARAGE FOR OIL CHANGES AND THAT IS MY LEGAL RIGHT. WHEN THE STARTER OIL WAS CHANGED AT 5,000 MILES I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS 3 QTS. LOW. THINKING IT WAS JUST LOW FROM THE FACTORY. THE NEXT OIL CHANGE THE CAR WAS 3 QTS LOW, NOTHING READING ON THE STICK! I WENT ABOUT 1,500 MILES AND WE CHECKED IT AND IT WAS 1 QT. LOW. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY WOULDN'T EVEN CHECK THE OIL UNTIL I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THEM AND LET THEM REPLACE THE OIL AND A RELIABLE FILTER. I DID. THIS WAS IN JUNE OF 2010. WE HAVE BEEN DOING OIL CONSUMPTION TEST FOR 9+ MONTHS. THE CAR HAS USED 1 QT. OF OIL EVERY 1,500 MILES , THE ECU HAS BEEN REPROGRAMMED AND DID NOT FIX ANYTHING 2,000+ MILES AGO, 5 OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. PRESSURE TEST AND LEAK TEST SHOW NO LEAKS! THE CAR RUNS LIKE A WAGON. THEY HAVE REPLACED 2 FOULED SPARK PLUGS. THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS TO BE WORKING WITH HONDA TO RESOLVE THIS. THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING TO RESOLVE THIS IN OVER 9 MONTHS WHILE I RUN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP OVER 12 TIMES, BEEN LIED TO BY GARAGE REPS, OWNER OF DEALERSHIP CALLED ME ON MY JOB AND INSULTED ME BY SAYING "I NEED TO HAVE COMMON SENSE, THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T MAKE THE CAR!" WHEN I ASKED HIM TO TAKE IT BACK AFTER 5 TEST!... WHILE BEING A SINGLE MOM AND WORKING A FULL TIME JOB. ALL WHILE PAYINY HIGH CAR PAYMENTS FOR A CAR THAT HAS TO BE PULLED OVER EVERY 1,500 MILES TO KEEP IT FROM BLOWING-UP. DOES HONDA TREAT ALL WOMEN THIS WAY? OR IS IT EVERYONE? IF I WANTED A UNRELIABLE PIECE OF JUNK, I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT AN OLDER USED CAR---STILL WOULD RUN BETTER THAN THIS ONE!!!!!

HELLO, FELLOW HONDA OWNERS!!! YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I PURCHASED A NEW 2008 HONDA ACCORD EX-V6 NAVI---LOADED!!! GREAT CAR, SO I THOUGHT. I HAD THE TYPICAL FOULED # 3 SPARK PLUG PROBLEM 2 TIMES AND MASSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. THE HONDA DEALER FIXED EVERYTHING FREE OF CHARGE. I THEN GOT TIRED OF GOING EVERY 3 MONTHS (40 K MI.) IT'S BEEN APPROX. 6 MONTHS AND 12,000 TROUBLE FREE MILES. LOW AND BEHOLD THE OIL ISSUE IS ALWAYS IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD SO I GO OUTSIDE AND START CHECKING THE OIL EVERY STAURDAY AND FIND MY 2010 ACCORD IS USING OIL. I HAVE NOT NOTIFIED THE DEALER YET.

Accord EX 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 4,000 miles

Honda Accord EX V6 2010, bought it brand new with 15 miles. Been consuming oil from day one. Added 1qt after 4000 miles. Called Honda corporate they told me to go to the dealer. Dealer put me on the oil consumption monitoring list. Now I have to visit the dealership shop every 1000-2000 miles so they can monitor the oil level, since it has to be done buy independent party. Time consuming.

Did some research on Internet, it looks like a lot of people who own 8th generations Accords (2008, 2009, 2010) haven the same problem with their engines. I owned Honda Accord 1998 for 12 years before, put 182000 miles and never had any oil consumption in that car. It looks like Honda really dropped the ball on their quality control. Honda either has to admit this problem and provide a solution (more precise rings, engine replacement, buy back cars, ya right ?!) or put it in their maintenance guide that between your regular oil changes you have to add 2 qts of oil in to the engine :-(

Update from Dec 22, 2010: Just wanted to give you an update. In mid October 2010 went to my dealership again (second time) to register the oil level it was down 3/4 qrt (drove 1800 miles) they call Honda of America Corporate. Honda corporate told them to update the software for the computer which controls the engine and change the oil. In the beginning of November 2010 got the call from my dealership they told me Honda Corporate sending team of four specialists to the dealership to investigate my engine. I guess this was the good news, but at the end of the diagnostic (they used sophisticated cameras and boars) the team concluded that there is nothing is wrong with the engine. The cause of excessive oil consumption (read: oil burn!) is incompatibility of my driving pattern and how software controls the VCM in the engine !!! Honda Corporate representatives told my dealership that there will be the new software update coming in the mid of December, 2010 to address this issue, well today is 22nd of December, 2010 no software updates :-( Took my car to the dealership to register the oil level again today (fourth time) oil level 1/2 qrt down (drove 1600 miles). While Honda working on the potential software/firmware fix for this problem, the engine continues to burn oil and as a result of this other components in the car are getting damaged: catalytic converter, oxygen sensors and finally carbon build up in the engine :-( No solution so far. Very disappointed in Honda.

Update from Feb 21, 2011: On February 4, 2011 Honda dealership received the new software from American Honda, updated the software for the computer which controls the engine. I drove 800 miles after the update, no difference engine still burns oil with the same rate. Also would like to mention that gas mileage got worst after the software update. On the freeway (driving same route to work 5 times a week) I used to get 29 miles per gallon on average, now I am getting only 26 miles per gallon.

I am very disappointed in Honda and I will not recommend anyone to buy Honda cars until Honda fixes the engine design/quality problem in 8th generation Accords (2008, 2009, 2010).

At 3100 miles I had to add a quart of oil to the engine. The car has mostly highway miles and is not driven over 70 MPH. I again checked the oil after 150 miles of adding oil and noticed a drop in oil. I also have a 2003 Honda Accord EXL V6 that never uses any oil.
