My wife is the principal driver of the car and first noticed the engine light flickering on and off and is how we first discovered this issue. Upon checking the oil level we discovered that there was no oil on the dipstick and took it to our local auto repair shop and they confirmed our findings. Neither the oil consumption indicator nor the low engine oil level gave any clue of low oil levels.

Since that time, I have complained at each service visit to my dealership in Mississauga where we purchased the vehicle brand new in 2010 about the low oil levels and they have since recommended an oil consumption test upon my insistence, which by the way I have had to pay for to determine if this is serious enough despite an official letter that I received from Honda on June 2015 basically extending the warranty and acknowledging this problem.

What bothers me is that my car goes into the dealership regularly for servicing but not once have they ever pointed out low oil levels and I'm constantly being told about the acceptable burn rate instead and I felt like enough doubt is cast to make you feel as if this is a normal occurrence.

It's worth noting that my catalytic converter had to be replaced this year under warranty and I'm curious to know if there is any correlation.

We have owned many cars over the last 27 years including Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and GM and have never experienced this type of issue before. Folks that I share this information with are alarmed as they don't see it as being normal for a fairly newer vehicle with low mileage from a reputable manufacturer.

In doing a lot of research over the internet and including this site, I discovered that this is not an isolated problem and there has been class action lawsuits in the US related to this issue on several Honda models. Not sure why Honda does not just do the right thing by recalling and fixing the issue before it causes harm to their reputation. I myself would be very weary of buying another Honda product unless this gets resolved to my satisfaction.

unacceptable for a new car if I wanted this type of problem I could have bought a $2800 car with 140000 miles on it. if they don't give me a new engine then I will never buy another Honda this car has now been run on low oil multiple times and the idiot light doesn't even come on to remind my wife and why would you think that a new car needs oil put in between oil changes???

Started hearing a grinding sound when I started my car up in the morning which led to rough shifts. The car uses an excess amount of oil and Honda doesn't want to do anything about it. I was Honda for Life, but after their response, they've lost a customer.

I started going to Honda Milton about the engine making noise and noticed the engine oil was almost empty although they had done an oil change earlier. From memory I think the car was showing 60% oil life and yet the dip stick showed there was almost no oil and no indicator coming on.

Ali from the location said that we needed to start an oil consumption test and also I was over 100000 miles or kms and over 5 years and out of warranty, if this was an oil consumption problem with the engine!!!!!! Imagine my amazement as my car was only 5 years old for heaven's sake!!! He also said I would have to call Honda Canada head office maybe they would pay part of it. Now I was getting really frustrated. So I continued for the following months going there and getting paranoid of my car gradually. I don't even know when it could die on me as it doesn't show anything. I live in fear of driving my own vehicle while I am on the roads now!!!

I keep hearing a rumbling noise coming from the inside and when I took it into Honda Milton they did a test and said they heard nothing.

Yesterday I went there again(Honda Milton) and this time dealt with Justin who now informed me that the warranty has been updated and it is now 200000 mile or km (unsure which one) and extended to for motor oil consumption and I don't recall receiving any thing about this in the mail. So there is a problem with the oil consumption on 2010 CRVs obviously and they are playing with owners and keeping this hush hush?????!!!!!

I have a colleague at work going through the same problem with a similar vehicle make model and year and after reading on here about other people having similar issues I seriously think HONDA should do a recall and fix all these cars or find other solutions!!!!

Does Honda even read these comments???can anyone tell me?? Has anyone thought of doing a class action with this issue? Or making this public to see how many other people have that same issue - TV, newspaper, social media?

I am really frustrated with that problem and I don't want to pay for something that is defective from manufacturer !!!!

Have been adding oil on a regular basis since purchasing the car new. Was told by dealer that they could find nothing wrong. Continue to add oil (2w qts) between oil changes.

Update from May 8, 2015: 05/08/15 Dealer doing oil change and checking for leaks. Recommends consumption test in 1000 miles. Dealer advised 1 qt per 1000 miles is normal.

This vehicle is consuming far more oil than is appropriate for its milage. I note further that the oil smells burnt, even at 80% remaining life as indicated on the dashboard. I have been told that this amount of oil consumption, and the smell is normal by the dealership, which I think is crap. I am exploring my options or the resolution of this problem

Car burns excessive amount of oil. Up to 1 liter every 1000km.

After calling Honda first I was told that my warranty was up and there's nothing they can do unless I want to pay for it myself. After speaking to them again and finding out that I still had the warranty. They told me that they've never heard of this problem and its most likely my driving habits.

Once I advised them that roughly 1,600,000 people in the USA had the exact same problem with their vehicles and they settled the lawsuit I was told "oh, we're not part of that Honda, two separate companies".

Next they wanted me to pay 8-10 hours of diagnosis at a rate of $100-120 per hour to see what was wrong. After I refused, they advised me to get an oil consumption test done, of course at my cost. Currently I'm in the process of getting the test done. When I asked the fine folks at Honda what the "acceptable rate of oil consumption was" I was told that they'll determine that AFTER I've completed my test. Hmmm sounds legit, thanks Honda.

Honda Canada is not honoring their Warranty. We took the car to them the first sign we had that there was a problem with the engine. The car shows 50% oil life, but no oil show's on the dip stick and no engine warning or indicator is displayed. I called head office and they said I needed to get an oil consumption test, we did, and they said the car was not burning enough oil for them to do something. This is ridiculous as the car needs oil top up way to often. For a car that is under warranty and also under extended warranty does not make sense that we have to keep checking the oil and keep adding more. Honda Canada needs to do something about our problem.

Purchased new from dealership. Regularly maintained and always have used recommend 0w-20. From new oil level was always low when came time for service, but not too excessive. Being a mechanic I took that as a cause of using very thin oil and other brands I have worked for oil consumption is normal. As miles went on the car, consumption went up. We now are adding 1qt of oil every 3 tank fills. Way to much. Of course we are now far out of warranty coverage, and it is crazy to have to do a rebuild at 100k when vehicle has always been well maintained. Really wanted this vehicle to last much longer for our family but we are rather disappointed with this lack of quality from Honda. Doing research found a TSB for reprogramming that was released in 2011, but does not have a vin range listed on tsb, and it never came up on visits to service department.

Have a 2010 CR-V (wife's car) and it is burning excessive amounts of oil in between oil changes, so much that the car doesn't shift correctly and we then have to add 1-2 quarts of oil.The dealership where we purchased the car is somewhat aware of the issue but when I called Honda, they say they never heard of this before. I noticed that there was a class action lawsuit against them but it doesn't include this vehicle.

Any help or advice from anyone that went through this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I've had the exact same issues as others on this site. I add 3-4 quarts of (expensive) oil between oil changes or during road trips. I've complained to American Honda and three local dealerships and they all make excuses, telling me it's normal consumption. Its really awful. Shame on Honda for this. I've owned their vehicles my entire life.

Update from Oct 31, 2014: I have had the VCM software update that Honda recommends.

My Honda CRV consumes oil. I never had a car in the last 35 years which consumed excessive amounts of oil! I need to add 2-3 quarts of expensive synthetic 5W20 between oil changes. Honda says this is "within acceptable limits" (1 quart per 1000 miles) . The recall... a joke. The problem is obviously mechanical, and the recall reprogrammed the on board computer. Next car is not going to be a Honda.

We've had numerous oil consumption tests done, dealer always indicates it's normal. I usually add 2 quarts of oil between oil changes. That's normal?

Service bulletin 11-049 is this exact problem but I don't know how to figure out if it covers our VIN. I don't trust a dealer to tell me that since they haven't yet. Even if it doesn't apply to our VIN if our car has this exact problem doesn't that mean they should fix it???

Also, because of this issue that they insist is normal we now have an issue with the catalytic converter. One way to consume oil is if it running rich. Running rich is known to ruin catalytic converters. Seems pretty straight forward to me, but a'hole dealers will fight tooth and nail to acknowledge the problem.

I went from Saturns to Hondas because I though Honda was known for their quality but I will never buy another one. I'm hoping I can screw some dealer into taking this one in trade without telling them anything.

I am religous about oil changes. In December of 2012 I was due for an oil change in about 500 miles (had appt/ scheduled) when oil light came on. I pulled over, light went out, and so thought it was a fluke. Mentioned it at next oil change and asked if I should not be using percentage indicator on dashboard, but rather just measuring miles? Tech assured me percentage indicator was accurate and I should use that.

Throughout the course of the year, nearing end of oil change, I would notice car sounded "rough" . Wasn't switching gears properly. I asked if maybe something was off in the timing. They searched the car at Automaster in Burlington and I was told everything was fine. A couple of times over the course of the year the oil light would flicker on and then go right off.

In early December the light flickered on and went off, I still had 1,000 miles before another oil change, I checked tho oil and could not get it to register on the stick. Added a quart and took it to my local, non Honda, trusted garage and asked them to change oil. They came out and said they took less than a quart of oil from the car! If I had not added a quarter I would have been running on empty! They suggested I touch base with dealership.

Found this information on internet and called dealership. Explained situation and took it up there that week (oil just changed) so they could check for leaks, There were no leaks. They said they would start an oil consumption log. I expected that from this website. I asked why the oil light would not STAY on when I was running on almost no oil. No answer.

I took it in on 1/21/2014 after 1500 miles. I had checked the oil in advance and they agreed it was down 1/2 a quart. They said, "In cold weather this is not abnormal." I assumed we would continue the consumption tests, but this statement made me a little uncomfortable. Today, after traveling another 1000 miles, I checked oil again. I am approximating that I am down another 1/2 a quart. Called Automaster in Burlington VT this morning. The service tech said "According to Honda, 1/2 a quart oil consumption every 1,000 miles is normal." I asked if he really thought this was normal to have to add 2 1/2 quarts of oil in between a 5,000 oil change. He stated, "That is what Honda tells us."

The 2010 Honda CRV is definitely a vehicle that should be added to the class action lawsuit for excessive oil consumption.

My CRV 2010 started using excessive oil. I just had my oil changed about one month ago, which the oil was low then and we had to add oil. Now it is below the low mark on stick already. When we took it into dealer, he said that we would need to wait and go through 3 oil changes before they could do anything, which based on the percentage alert I only get the oil changed around 2 time per year. When we open the hood there is a light film of oil all over everything. At this point, we are not impressed with the CRV or the Honda dealer at all.
