CR-V

  • 4,200 miles
I was driving our 2018 Honda CR-V 1.5L SUV (with 4200 miles odometer reading at the time of the incident) on Saturday, March 2 on Iowa state highway 92 going approximate 62mph and were 25 miles from home when the vehicle stalled and lost engine power unexpectedly and we had to go to the shoulder of the highway to get out of traffic coming behind us on the road. The vehicle would not accelerate to more than 6mph and the engine light was flashing when any effort to accelerate was made. We called Honda roadside assistance and were told it would be a 4 hour wait for a tow. The outside temperature that day was 16 degrees above zero Fahrenheit. It was 3 hours before a tow service arrived. Our vehicle was towed to smart Honda in des moines, Iowa which was the closest Honda dealer. The service department suspected the oil dilution problem and did an oil change that day. We were asked to keep our vehicle at smart Honda until they could complete the service required. We were not given a loaner vehicle to use while the CR-V was at the dealer. We bought this vehicle in July 2018 and in October of 2018 we received an email from consumer reports about the oil dilution problem in the 2017-18 CR-V 1.5L engines. We did not receive any info from Honda corporation until January 2019 when we got a letter about a software update due to 'drivability concerns'. due to severe weather in Iowa, we were not able to schedule a service appointment and there was no emergency urgency in the letter we received. We are hugely disappointed and upset about this issue and consider it extremely unsafe to have a vehicle that can stall at anytime and anyplace. A safety recall on this engine should be issued before someone is killed with a stalled engine occurring completely at random.

While driving the CR-V down the country roads in my area the vehicle started to shake and loose power. The check engine light came on and while trying to find a safe place to pull off the vehicle began loosing power. With the gas pressed to the floor the vehicle would not go above five miles an hour. Finding a location to pull over. The vehicle was shut off and the engine was crackling and smelled like it was burning. Getting out of vehicle for safety reasons allowed showed that the smell was worse on the outside. The vehicle was towed to the dealership where it was deemed in operable. They provided me with a loaner; however, I am paying for a vehicle that cannot be driven. This vehicle was only off the lot for three months with less than 800 miles.

Observed high engine oil level; almost an inch over the high level mark on dipstick with gas odor. Honda advised to get it checked out at the dealer. Took it to dealer on 2/4/19 at 21152 miles. They found oil level high with gas smell. But did not do anything saying that Honda is working on a software update. There is a software update issued by Honda as service bulletin 18-114. But mine does not qualify for any update. Honda case manager advised to take it back if stalls or engine light comes on. I am concerned about engine lubrication problems and thereby reduced life of engine and possible emission problems down the road once warranty expires. Concerned danger of vehicle stalling in the middle of traffic as well. On cold start engine vibration feels at the steering. Takes time for the engine to heat up.

The contact owns a 2018 Honda CR-V. while inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the oil level was above the fill line. The contact also smelled fuel mixed with the oil. The manufacturer referred the contact to tracy Honda (3450 auto plaza way, tracy, ca 95304, (209) 832-1400). The dealer was aware of fuel mixing with the oil and did not schedule an appointment. The contact called the manufacturer and they did not assist. The failure mileage was 11,000. The VIN was unknown.

2018 Honda CR-V touring edition with 4,000 miles on it in Kansas City, mo. As I was driving down the interstate on the way home from work, an overwhelming smell of gasoline invaded the cabin. As I was only a few miles from home, I kept driving, thinking it may have been from another vehicle. However, the smell remained. When I got home and parked in the garage, I opened the hood, and it was clear my engine was the source of the fumes. Had to keep the garage open for fear the fumes could ignite. Vehicle is currently at the Honda dealership for service. Dealer claims they've never experienced this type of issue, and is currently investigating.

CR-V 4-cyl

  • 4,525 miles
When driving my vehicle on the highway, it shut down and the service engine light came on, it had lost all power and it had 4525 miles on it. I was on my way to take it up for a recall for a software update with A/C control unit replacement ; dtc P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, or P0172. I had to call Honda road side assistance and my vehicle was hauled on a flat bed trailer to get the recall fixed. This recall also involved an oil change, of which they were making the customer responsible to pay for the filter, they would change the filter with the oil change, but not pay for the filter when changing the oil. There is also an oil disillusion problem with this vehicle as there is gas going into the oil causing a gas smell in the oil and thinning out the oil. Also there is a heating problem with this vehicle as there is no heat which comes out of the blowers, which where I live is very important to have for 6-9 months out of the year. I would rather not have air conditioning as I can roll down my window to get cooled off, but there is only one way I can get heat in my car and that is from running the engine and using the climate control in the car. In cold weather states when driving this car is not safe because when it shuts down and isn't drivable and the car isn't able to produce heat when you are stranded a person could freeze to death because of the cars inability to produce heat while stranded in the cold weather. My oil already smells of gas and I have driven it less than 700 miles since the oil change, that was performed with the recall. I am taking to Honda dealer again for an exam I was told, to check out spark plugs and X-ray them and also for another oil change, with 5219 miles on car now, so with less than 700 miles from last oil change I will now be getting another. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

At several points in time during November and December, I smelled a foul odor in the passenger cabin. I notified the dealer and there was a recall in which they applied the fix. Even now, there appears to be a foul smell once in a while. The heating system takes a long time to heat up in the winter. If in park/idle mode, the heat will automatically be less hot for some reason.

Fumes in the cabin when starting during cooler weather. Gasoline present in the engine oil, which dilutes the oil and results in levels higher than recommended by manufacturer. Concerns documented with a certified Honda dealer. Amending software has not solved the problem. We were hold that Honda engineers are working on a solution. We have been to the dealer 4 times without a resolution.

CR-V

  • 9,700 miles
I noticed the oil level being over full in the fall of 2018, at that time we had about 6,000 miles on the vehicle. At 7237 miles I had my first oil change our dealer on October 15, 2018. I became aware of the oil dilution issue after receiving a letter from Honda regarding service bulletin 18-114. I checked the oil level and found it to be way over-filled on December 1, 2018. I visited the dealer and they advised that a permanent fix was on its way and I should wait for a formal recall, however I was very concerned about the long term affect on our car's engine so I returned to the dealer and expressed my displeasure with the delay. They called me a day or two later indicating that they would perform the recall work which was completed on January 8, 2019. I checked the oil level immediately after the oil change and found it was at the top of the orange plastic tip of the dipstick (I realize the full level is at the top hole in the orange tip). Hoping that the oil dilution issue was fixed, I checked the oil again today, February 15, 2019 after the vehicle sat in the garage all night. The oil level was found to be way above the full mark and beyond the top of the orange tip by more than '. the oil dilution issue has not been corrected in my vehicle. I filed a complaint with Honda mc and received a phone call from a tech who informed me that "there was no issue with the vehicle and if the check engine light came on to return to the dealer". I expressed my displeasure with this response and she repeated her "canned" response. I am not the only owner of this vehicle/engine with the same issue. I request that the NHTSA formally investigate this matter as the Canadian and chinese governments have and have found this matter to be real.
