Odyssey

  • 34,000 miles
I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey with 34,000 miles on it. The left rear shock is blown and needs replaced. A vehicle with such low mileage should not have a blown shock. The power steering has problems as well. After the van has been running for 15-20 minutes the power steering makes loud noise during turns and when parking, the power steering becomes very difficult to turn. I have contacted Honda dealer and they are not willing to cover the costs for either repair since I'm past the 36,000 mile or 3years warranty period. From what I have researched, the steering issue is a big problem. Why hasn't this been a recall issue!!!! it's very dangerous to continue having this problem.

Power steering failed in Honda Odyssey 2005. Heard intermittent grinding noises when steering, but noise goes away in warmer temperatures. Had problems steering and took it to the Honda dealership. Cost me $650 to replace power steering pump and reservoir. The car only has 60,000 miles on it. I have never replaced a power steering pump in any car I have ever owned and I have one now that has 175,000 miles on it. This is very dangerous especially if it went out while driving. Fortunately mine didn't but I could of had a serious wreck.

The power steering is making noises which are progressively getting worse. 1) the noises started about 2 months ago and were a result of regular driving around town. 2) the noises used to be intermittent, by now they can be heard all the time. 3) problem has yet to be corrected to date. Will be repaired within the next couple of weeks.

Noise in power steering pump; now fails to turn at low speeds; being told to replace power steering pump by dealer. Numerous articles on internet from like owners with same problem. This seem to be a defect for recall. It is also a safety issue as you have no power steering at low speeds like in parking lots where many accidents occur.

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, he noticed that the battery light illuminated and then he lost steering power. It was extremely difficult to turn the steering wheel to the left or right. A local mechanic stated that the bolt holding the belt tensioner on the alternator bracket was improperly installed which caused the power steering to fail. The vehicle is currently being repaired at a cost of $700. The contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer regarding the steering failure and was advised to have the vehicle inspected by an authorized dealer. The failure mileage was 75,000.

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey minivan which I purchased brand new in 2005 from the hall Honda Virginia beach, va in 2005. There have been times that while driving I would hear a whining type of noise. When I took it to the dealership for an oil change they tried to find the noise by test driving it but it did nut duplicate as it is sporadic. Now I have taken it to the dealership for a state inspection and during their preventive check they have stated they have found metal shavings in the power steering pump reservoir which is an indication of the power steering pump going bad. It will cost me $700 to replace the pump and the reservoir plus flush and fill it. I have also discovered through my research that there is a known problem with the 2005 Honda Odyssey having defective power steering pumps and the wining noise is one of the indications of it going bad. Please reference this web site www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/Odyssey/2005/steering/loud_intermittent_whine_when_turning.com there are 16 complaints on this web site noting this problem. I am sure there are many others elsewhere - this is a safety issue as a pump can malfunction while driving causing an accident to happen. Why has there not been a recall on this matter? the dealership states the warranty for this item is 3yrs or 36,000 miles. I have called Firestone and even the rep there stated that the vehicle is too new for this type of thing to happen, especially in a Honda. The noise began approx a year or so ago but Honda dealerships could not duplicate it.

Sudden loss of power steering: When engine is at idle speed (as when pulling into a parking place), there is a sudden loss of power steering when trying to turn the wheel quickly (as in trying to avoid an incident). This can have minor to serious consequences depending on what you may be trying to avoid. This seems to be a common problem based on internet postings.

My 2005 Honda Odyssey has had the buzzing, humming sound on two different occasions. The first time it occurred while under warranty and was taken care of by the dealer. The second time the car had 52000 miles on it and the dealer contacted Honda to see if they would cover it. They would not but allowed me a 50% discount on the repair. This should be a bulletin item covered by the company.

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Odyssey. While driving 55 mph, power steering fluid began leaking from the vehicle and caused the power steering to malfunction. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer the same day to inquire about the noise from the steering wheel. He was informed that there were no failures with the vehicle. The contact feels that the vehicle is unsafe to drive because he was unable to steer at the time of the failure. The current and failure mileages were 22,000.

According to Honda service bulletin 07-005 June 17, 2008 titled power steering pump whines, buzzes, or hums (supersedes 07-005, dated January 26, 2007, to update the information marked by the black bars), symptom "the power steering pump whines, buzzes, or hums after driving for 30 minutes in temperatures 35 to 40 degrees F (2 to 5 degrees C). Probable cause the power steering pump reservoir is defective correction action: Flush the power steering system with clean power steering fluid, and then replace the power steering reservoir. Parts information power steering reservoir: P/N 53701-shj-A01C1, H/C 0923672 required materials Honda genuine power steering fluid: P/N 08206-9002, H/C 3747284 (four bottles per vehicle are needed) the defective power steering reservoir causes the power steering pump to whine because power steering fluid is not pump out of the reservoir. If power steering fluid is not being pumped out of the reservoir, the power steer fails which could result in loss of steering control. Honda acknowledges this problem with the above information and the warranty information but refuses to correct this problem on vehicles out side of the 36000 miles warranty. According Honda service bulletin 07-005, this "applies to 2005-07 Odyssey -all 2008 -from VIN 5fnrl38..8B000001 thru 5fnrl38..8B075356 -from VIN F5nrl38..8B400001 thru 5fnrl38..8B419525 I asked my local Honda dealer (cale yarborough Honda 2723 West palmetto street florence SC 29501 843-669-5556) to estimate how much this repair would cost. According to their service manager, the replacement reservoir is $11.50, the power steering fluid is $16 and the labor is $170. The total cost $197.50. Since this defect has been acknowledged by Honda and may results in loss of steering control and an accident, Honda should recall this part and pay for it to be repaired on vehicles with this problem.

2005 Honda Odyssey noise in the front of the vehicle and shaking in steering wheel. Consumer states that the dealer stated the wheel bearings needed to be replaced. Even after the replacement the problem persisted. The consumer was informed the problem he was experiencing with the shaking was due to a inoperative catalytic converter. It was replaced, however the noise and shaking continued. The vehicle had run flat tires, so if the tires became flat the consumer could drive up to 50 miles, however when the consumer experienced a flat, the vehicle would not move. The consumer was informed the tire was defective. The engine light illuminated. The consumer was told the vehicle needed another catalytic converter. When the consumer picked the vehicle up, the engine light was still on.
