went to the dealer today to have them check the pump and they said it would cost $89 for diagnosis. I told them the car only had 16,000 miles and was under warranty and the service manager agreed to take a look. they found nothing wrong, pump was quiet of course, as it takes 45 minutes of driving before it starts to groan. the service manager gave me the impression that the pump would have to fail in order for him to act. I told him it would be a shame if the pump were to fail while my wife was driving the car and her safety was compromised. we left on good terms, but I am disappointed that a possible safety issue was not resolved.

Power steering pump making whining noise. Took to dealer, but of course, it didn't make the noise then. Had a buddy listen to it and he knew instantly that it was the power steering pump. Took back to dealer and told them to check the pump. They replaced it under warranty. Based on what I have read, I am concerned about it happening again with the new pump. I guess we'll see. If it does, I will refer them to this website for documentation of this problem.
