I have a 2011 Sonata, complains of excessive oil burn and loud noise.car burns around 1 quats per 1000 miles.dealer done a oil consumption test and found out its burning too much oil.they wants me to replace the engine.I have done all the oil changes at 3000 miles and its well maintained.dealer said everything is fine with my car as per the 2015 engine recall is concerned.they want me to pay for an engine replacement, when its well known that 2011 Sonata engines have manufacturing defect.I found lot of people having same issue end up in engine stall.its a matter of safety.nobody expect a new model car to burn oil like this and dealer will never say that I was low on oil, when I take the car for an oil change.I found out the problem after randomly checking my oil level.it was well below low.all other cars we have need no top up between oil change.I request NHTSA to take this matter seriously.

I am having trouble starting and completely shutting my car down. When I hit the button to start it I get a rattle noise and the the engine doesn't turn over. When I try to shut it off the display in the car will tell me to shift to park when already in park and the radio will not shut off. I have to re-start the car and move the shift lever from park to drive and back to get it to shut down. This goes on several times some days. Also when I'm driving in automatic, the car will suddenly go into manual first gear and I will have to shift over to manual and back to auto to put it in drive. I had a recall for shift lever problems before but I think there is more to the problem then what they are fixing. This car seems to have many electrical problems. My HVAC also has quit working while driving and had to shut the car down before it would work again.

Case number [xxx] : hi my name is [xxx] I purchased a car on September of 2010 not even a year later started to hear knocking in the engine in 2012. Took the car to mid island- Hyundai in centereach NY 11720 was told that it was due to "lack of maintenance" that the "short block, gaskets tensioners" needed to be replaced. Dealer didn't not give loaner car had to wait 3 months for repairs to be done in the amount of $3889.43. Then in Oct of the same year while on a trip same knocking noise was heard then engine stopped running. Had the car towed to a dealer in Canada, dealer told us that it was engine failure. We told them that according to mid island Hyundai we got a "new engine". repair were made on the car no charge, had to return to new your in a retail car that was paid out of pocket. Last month we receive a letter stating that car is being recalled do to the "short block" and other issues with the engine. Letter states that if knocking noise was hear coming form the engine to immediately take it to be serviced. I'm sending this compliant letter so I could be reimburse the full amount of the previous repair done in 2012 of $3889.43. Do to the fact that it wasn't my "lack of maintenance" but do to poor manufacturing of Hyundai. Spoke to a rep regarding this issue, she gave me this case number [xxx]. please contact me at [xxx] or email me at [xxx]I'm also uploading all paper work regarding repairs and recall letter. There was a recall on the brake switch for 2011 Sonatas. Coincidentally, I am having the issue on my car. Although I have to pay $200 out of pocket for this, I should be reimbursed as this is not coincidental and it should have been recalled on my vehicle. Now the engine is being recalled. This vehicle is terrible and unsafe!

For the last 2.2 years my Sonata limited has not kept a stable coolant level. We first noticed the problem when on a trip in Arizona when we checked the oil just to be safe. I was about 1K from needing an oil change. We added 50/50 coolant and drove home and immediately made an appt with the dealership. They said they didn't find a problem and sent me away. This issue continued, coolant would be low or gone between oil changes (3K miles). I have taken the car back at least 4 times and although they have "fixed" a couple of potential issues, the problem persists. I have lived in extremely warm climates all of my life and I have never had a car where the coolant seemed to vanish for no reason and not leave a trace. I am now at 52,370 miles and am concerned that there may be damage and I will not have a warranty soon. I am considering the song-beverly warranty rights. Please help!

Sonata

  • 45,100 miles
I have owned this car for 4 1/2 years and it is my everyday vehicle. I entered the vehicle and started it like any other day and proceeded to drive to my destination. As I was traveling, acceleration felt normal. I went through an intersection, making a left hand turn and continuing on. Upon coming to the next intersection, the light turned red so I came to a complete stop. As I did, I looked across the dashboard and noticed suddenly every possible indication signal was lit. As the light turned green I attempted to use the gas pedal to start driving forward only to find that the gas pedal had suddenly gone stiff and it was clear that the engine was off. I was forced to put the car into park, return the key to its starting position and restart the car entirely. I then continued on my way but very cautiously leery after this episode. I continued on for another couple of miles and as I saw traffic ahead of me I began to slowly engage the parking break to start decelerating slowly and all of a sudden the engine stalled and cut off again, this time while the car was still traveling! I desperately used all of my strength to press on the again stiff break pedal while finally thinking to use my other foot to attempt to engage the emergency break as the car was still in motion and cars were coming to a complete stop just ahead of me! Hyundai has stated recently that there is a known recall involving similar malfunctions but tells me that it is not "finalized" and the "vehicle is completely drivable while they work on this" and I was advised I would have to pay out of pocket to even have the inspection done at this time.
