Sonata

  • 78,000 miles
While driving on a main road in my city I accelerated and heard a banging noise in my engine, when I accelerated the noise got louder. Finally, the noise stopped and as I noticed the noise gone I also noticed I could no longer hear my engine. I tried to accelerate and my speedometer was completely frozen with the oil light, engine light, and battery light on. I was able to coast to a residential area where my car was picked up and towed. Fast forward a few days and Hyundai is now claiming that the engine failure is due to neglect as now they are requiring all maintenance records for my vehicle or my warranty is null. If I can't get my whole maintenance history then I was told that will be a real problem and my service may be denied! mind you, 2014 Sonatas were recalled due to their engine but I was assured the 2015 Sonatas have a different engine, different part. Please do your research and do not buy a Hyundai, they do not stand by their work.

Engine performance was reduced; a knocking sound could be heard from the left side of the engine; within a few days the engine stalled while driving and would not restart. Hyundai dealer inspection indicates the engine is seized up. Symptoms are similar to those in engine-recalled Hyundai Sonatas from the previous model year. Hyundai declines to pay to replace the engine, but I suspect this is the same problem as occurred in previous model year, for which Hyundai is replacing engines.

Air intake hose from the air filter box to the turbocharger inlet - 2.0 turbo engine - melted and broke. Reduced power and potentially foreign debris can enter the turbocharger and damage it, reducing power even further. Apparently many owners with the 2.0 turbo engine have experienced the same issue. I went to the local dealership this morning and they told me it could be a month before the back ordered part arrives. I was not offered alternative transportation.

My engine suddenly stalled while driving down a busy highway with my family. Luckily no one was hurt thank the lord! we were driving down the highway when we started to hear a knocking noise and the car started to decelerate. We noticed there was white smoke as well. I was able to get the car to the shoulder of the highway. The car would not restart so we called roadside assistance and since it was Saturday evening, (after hours) we had park the car at a nearby walmart until Monday. I had to do the whole roadside assistance song and dance all over again Monday. The service department was very accommodating. They were pleasant and even provided a loaner car. They informed me the engine would need to be replaced but since my car only had 34,000 miles it should be covered. They said they just had to get it approved by Hyundai first. After a week of waiting they called me up an told me Hyundai would not be covering the vehicle due lack of maintenance (sighted oil crude build up as evidence) and I would need to fork over $5500. I got the oil changed and maintained the car but failed to keep documentation. Upon researching the issue, it appears Hyundai has a history of not standing by their warranty and leaving their customers high and dry. In fact they just settled a law suit for the same exact thing. So we paid up, waited a week for the repairs and now I'm back up here a week later with another engine problem (overheating). Luckily we only had the car for a week because they likely would've charged me again. Well hopefully they will provide me with a loaner again because this just destroyed my work schedule for today.

The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. While making a left turn, the rpms would increase and then idle. When shifting into drive, the motor would jerk violently. Takata recall......I was driving my car and I heard a loud noise, shortly thereafter, the car dashboard said that the car was running hot and it shut down in the middle of traffic. I rolled to a stop and put the car in park. I got out the car and look under the car to see if I saw anything because of the noise, and I didn't see anything. I popped the hood and noticed that the antifreeze level was not low and that the pressure was not tight on the radiator hose. So I could not understand why the car was running hot. I closed the hood and got back into the car and started the car back up because it appeared to have cool down. I drove the car to the nearest parking lot and called a tow truck to take the car to the dealership. Once the dealership look at the car, they noticed that the pulley was not on the alternator, the serpentine belt was at the bottom of the car and that was the reason the car was running hot. They said they have never seen anything like that before. New car with only 66,000 miles on it and the pulley on the alternator is completely off while driving is not safe. In rush hour traffic in the city, is not safe for me and my kids.

I was on a city street approaching a red light, as I was coming to a stop my car's engine shut off without warning. Oil light, check engine light, and battery light were illuminated. I put my hazards on, put the car in park and attempted to re-start the car with no luck. Car did not make any turning over sounds when trying to re-start. Dashboard lights, radio, powers windows still worked. I called roadside assistance and waited in my car blocking one lane of traffic. After about 10 minutes a passerby pushed my car to the side of the road, at this time I noticed it was very hard to steer and the brakes started to lock up. I put the car in park and waited for the tow truck. While waiting I made several attempts to re-start the car. After about 30 minutes the car restarted and I was able to drive the 3 blocks home. The following morning I had the car towed to the dealership. I was told they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle. They could not recreate the issue and no error codes showed up. There were also no error coeds in the log but if the engine shut down it seems like something should be in the log. I'm extremely nervous to drive thinking this can happen again in a more dire situation (like on the freeway). I see other complaints online with this same situation and am concerned for mine and my passengers' safety.

Performed oil changes at two different auto repair facilities within 4 day span. The reason for this is each service showed overfill on oil dipstick. Showed the service advisers at both facilities. I took vehicle to Hyundai dealer and purchased a replacement oil level indicator as per VIN. They say I had wrong dipstick for engine. Placed replacement dipstick in engine and showed Hyundai service rep that oil level still showed overfill. I had them change oil and they showed me that replacement dipstick registered correct oil level. So, either this engine is operating ( 38000 miles) at under fill, overfill or proper fill level. Been using manufacturers oil viscosity recommendation (5W-20 and dealer used 5W-30 syn/bld).

At about 12:00 pm on 7 April 2017, I was stopped at a red light on a major thoroughfare (50 mph speed limit). When the light turned green, I depressed the gas pedal, but the vehicle failed to move. Instead, it hesitated, bucked a bit, and then lost power altogether. I put the car in neutral and, after a couple of tries, the car restarted. As I accelerated, the car exhibited more hesitation, then operated normally. Ironically, I was on the way to the local Hyundai dealer to pick up our other vehicle and made it there. I reported the problem to the dealer and turned it over to them for diagnosis/repair. The dealer could neither detect any problem nor duplicate the incident. According to their write-up: "scanned for codes. No dtcs at this time. Fuel pressure is normal. 10 mile test drive and update has already been completed....unable to duplicate..." this morning, I learned that Hyundai has recalled 1.2 million vehicles and symptoms of the problem are exactly those that my vehicle exhibited. However, my vehicle is a 2015 model and does not appear to be covered by the recall, notwithstanding the problem I experienced yesterday. In any case, my vehicle has only 26K miles and has been well maintained by the dealer. I suspect it has the problem for which Hyundai is now recalling over a million vehicles.
