The contact owned a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. While at a stop and depressing the accelerator pedal, an explosion was heard coming from the engine. The check engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was able to coast to the side of the road. The contact noticed black smoke underneath the hood and from both front tires. In addition, the contact stated that the engine burst into flames. The fire department extinguished the fire. A police report was filed and there were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened case number: 11082662. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000.

The car was taken to curtis automotive in falmouth, MA for new tires. While the car was being test-driven on the highway the test-driver indicated the engine made a loud banging noise, he pulled over, the engine seized, oil was everywhere. The car was towed back to curtis automotive and then to Hyundai where the car engine has always been serviced. Hyundai indicated 'the engine block cracked from piston #4' but no further diagnosis as to what caused this or why this happened. Research indicates there is no predictability for it happening, but the common factors are: It pertains to turbo charged engines, happens at lower speeds coupled with higher loads and high cylinder pressures referred to as low speed pre-ignition (lspi) where combustion occurs prematurely impacting mechanical internals of gasoline engines, evidenced with severe knocking because the pistons and connecting rods are rising when this downward combustion (bang) occurs. Worst case scenarios indicate this leads to broken piston rings, damaged ring lands and/or bent connecting rods. Further, operating at relatively low RPM and constant load such as highway cruising the engine can slip into the lspi zone where potential engine damage may occur. 2 references: www.velosterturbo.org/forum/Veloster-turbo-discussions/9852-why-motors-keep-blowing-up.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?V=nudb_tiijhu

I have a 2013 Hyundai Veloster turbo with a 1.6 liter turbo engine that threw a rod thru the engine block.Hyundai issued recalls on the sonata and they have been replacing defective 1.6 liter turbo engines for some Velosters and not others that are having identical problems.they should have to recall all of them.I had a ticking sound for approximately one month and it sounded like a lifter tick.after doing a lot of online research everyone said to continue driving it because it was carbon build up on the intake valves.I am an ase master tech with over 40 years experience and I have never heard a rod make a ticking sound like this.there are lots of complaints on line concerning this issue and Hyundai has not recognized them.yes they do offer a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty to the original purchaser and only a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty to the second owner.I had to have the standard transmission replaced at approximately 28,000 miles by Hyundai for a design flaw in the transmission case causing the seal to leak, but they will not do anything about the engine because I am the second owner. If I was the original owner they would replace it.I have changed my oil and filter every 3 to 4,000 miles and my car is pampered by me.when it threw the rod I was pulling from a stop sigh at less than 5 mph and less than 1,000 rpms and it died as I was turning onto the highway.

Incident happened on July 21st 2017 at 1:45pm at 9701 dessau road, austin Texas. I was coming around the corner at dessau and rundberg heading North and I felt the car skip a little and had some loss of power. I pulled into the parking lot at 9701 dessau and the car was smoking and the brakes went out. I pulled the emergency brake and then opened the hood, there was fire and black smoke coming out and I ran inside to get a fire extinguisher. It looked like the alternator failed and caught on fire. The fire spread under the motor cover and burned some of the hood, but I got to it quickly and minimal damage was done. I could have crashed and died.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle started to lose power and acceleration. In addition, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The following day, the contact drove to the dealer (university Hyundai in decator, Alabama) where the vehicle was kept for one and a half months without rendering a diagnosis. The contact was provided with a rental vehicle in the interim; however, the dealer was currently requesting payment in full for the rental vehicle before releasing the contact's vehicle. The contact also stated that the vehicle was repaired per a recall for the fuel line that, in turn, damaged other parts of the engine that were not covered by the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The recall details were not provided. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

Had car for around a year and have had nothing but issues with shakes suspension and as of recent a rod threw through my engine wall through my oil compartment. I keep up with the maintenance of the car regularly and for something so huge of that nature to happen is bizarre. Apparently hundreds of millions of Hyundai have been recalled due to engine failure (rods being thrown). I'm having the same issue as many other drivers with no resolution. I've reached out Hyundai multiple times to have them inspect the vehicle and have even had them just drive it around because you can tell right away this car drives funny. They only responded with well it's just the type of car. Well I would have never bought this car if I knew I would be having this many issues. This car is unsafe and needs to have the engine problems recalled along with the suspension when it jumps out of line. I feel like the shakey suspension when hitting a small bump and every other problem has been leading up to throwing the rod. I'm so disappointed and will be filling legal action if this does not get resolved in my favor. As I have no other choice.

Engine runs too lean to begin with. After approximately 43,000 miles, the engine failed. Dealer refused to fix due to "aftermarket spark plugs." Issue began with oem plugs and aftermarket was later installed. Dealer refuses to honor warranty and frequently covers up their mistakes. Vehicle began issues on travel home from work. Cel was blinking. Car taken to dealership and was not repaired. Owner replaced spark plugs after inspection of faulty plugs. Issue occurred again and was taken to dealer. Dealer refused work due to aftermarket plugs. Closer inspection revealed a faulty exhaust valve in cylinder 3. dealer still refused repair.

Vehicle slips out of gear often. Dealership cannot duplicate problem, and one dealer dismissed my complaint. Happens after accelerating from a stop when shifting from 1-2 but has happened when shifting 2-3 and it slips out and engine revs, disengaged from wheels (as if in neutral). This is when using it in normal mode, not sport or manual shift. There are numerous other complaints online in various forums (not yet on nhsta site it seems) this is very unsafe in traffic as the driver must stop accelerating, shift car into N and then back to drive to get it to work again.

Driver turned right from a stop sign onto a highway and began accelerating to 55 M.P.H when driver reached approximately 35 M.P.H, he heard a loud bang in the engine compartment at which point the vehicle lost power. The vehicle was still running but the driver could not accelerate or throttle. The driver pulled off to the side of the road when the driver noticed white smoke accumulating and the smell of coolant or antifreeze coming into the interior of the vehicle. The smoke was coming from the engine compartment and became darker in color. The engine then went up in flames.

The engine light came on 2 weeks earlier took car in and they claim they made an adjustment and I was also told might happen again and the would need to replace valve 4 or cylinder 4 not sure which then I was driving home down the block from my house engine light came on and then major noise in engine and all lights came on engine shut off had to push car home... had towed to dealer next day they told me rod went thru the rengine and needed a new engine. The dealer has had my car now for 6 weeks and they cannot tell me when it will be repaired (prefer to be replaced) I am not a happy camper at all.

It started as some small shocks from door and steering wheel. The vehicle now shocks you from just about anywhere you stand. I did bring it to the dealer and after having for over 3 days only a oil change had been done. I asked to pick up for a appt. I had on Sunday and all three pages of what was to be looked at stated work not done.I told service advisor I needed to get car fixed before I drove across country, I asked to bring it back and he said I thought you were leaving which I am but very concerned about driving any length because it gets painful if I have to turn on lights.

My 2013 Hyundai Veloster almost stalled at least 3 times during the past 2 months. Whether I'm going up a slight incline (in California) or if accelerating after a stop. I've recently noticed that when the air conditioner and radio is on it sometimes will sputter and drop rpms and nearly stalls. I've taken it to the dealer and explained it to them. The service department claimed they couldn't duplicate the problem. [xxx] it's happened to me several times. There needs to be a recall due to all of the online similar complaints about Veloster stalls!!!! NHTSA please look into all of the complaints! information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

While traveling down the road at approximately 50 mph the crank pulley fell off the motor. This prevents the alternator, water pump and ac compressor from functioning as they are belt driven. With the alternator not functioning the batter will be drained to the point of dead (depending on what accessories are on) and with the water pump not functioning the car will almost immediately overheat leaving the vehicle stranded.
