Incident occurred on freeway while traveling at 70 mph. Was traveling in the #1 lane and encountered a slower moving vehicle. Changed to the #2 and accelerated, but got no response from the vehicle. The freeway at this portion is a downgrade so vehicle was able to coast downhill. I accelerated again and vehicle failed to accelerate. A "service transmission soon" message was displayed on dashboard. I exited the freeway and came to a complete stop at the bottom of the offramp. I pressed the gas, while in drive, and the vehicle did not move. Placed in park and then back in drive and the vehicle did not respond. Placed vehicle in park and shut it down and restarted vehicle and it did struggle to move forward several feet. Placed vehicle in reverse and it did not respond. Repeated sequence of turning it off and back on and the vehicle responded. Placed vehicle in drive and it did not respond. Repeated sequence and vehicle finally moved forward. Was able to slowly drive vehicle to dealership. After half a day dealership stated "Chrysler" told them to wiggle the cables and see if any of them are loose. After they determined the cables were not loose they installed the new transmission updates and cleared the error codes. Service tech stated the problem should not happen again. So far I have not experienced any other failure with the transmission.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. While driving 24 mph or less, the vehicle failed to decelerate when the accelerator pedal was released. The contact was able to stop the vehicle by depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 434.

The car suffers from poor shifting characteristics. It experiences extreme lag between the time the accelerator is depressed and the time that the engine responds. Shifts to allow passing activities on the highway are especially problematic, as its ability to provide good response/power when attempting to pass at speed is, in a word, crap. The car experiences shift delays when attempting to accelerate from 40+ to 60+, it experiences lag and then sudden acceleration when attempting to maintain speed or accelerate while going uphill, and it experiences slow response off of stops unless the gas pedal is floored. Because of its uncertain acceleration response, it is extremely difficult to be comfortable driving this vehicle. Jeep needs to recall the car and perform actual qc testing on the transmission. It is simply awful and a dangerous piece of equipment to have on the road.

Have experienced horrible shifting problems since I drove the 2014 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk off the lot. Jerks forward from stop and at different gear changes. Believe this will cause additional damage to already poor performing transmission. Hesitates gear change some times when on highway that could be dangerous. Two days ago started vehicle and placed in reverse. Jeep slammed into gear and engine light came on. Light saying to put vehicle back on park came on. I did this and then put the vehicle back into drive. Pressed gas and vehicle went backwards. Had to be towed to the dealer. Dealer is still evaluating vehicle and has done a software update. I asked about the jerky shifting and they are saying it is normal for the vehicle. They are being slammed with customer complaints about transmission problems according to the service department rep. Calling an improperly performing transmission normal because its happening to most of these vehicles is not acceptable. This is an expensive vehicle and never should have been sold under these conditions. Others should know what they are getting into by purchasing one of these and Jeep needs to rectify this situation immediately.

This is the second incident of this nature. While driving at 75 mph on the interstate, the vehicle lost all drive to the wheels. The vehicle was coasting, with heavy traffic coming from behind. The vehicle was essentially dead on the highway. My wife managed to coast to the shoulder. The vehicle check engine light was on as well a message to "service transmission". the vehicle had to be placed on a flat bed and taken to the dealer. This is not the only incident involving these vehicles. There is a serious problem with the 9 speed transmission, as there have been three technical service bulletins, from Chrysler, and our vehicle has had all of them performed. The vehicle is still at the dealers so I am unable to advise what, if any corrective action will be taken. I do know my wife was scared to death when she found herself basically immobile in heavy car and truck traffic, approaching her from the rear at 75 mph.

Jeep transmission does not shift smoothly it pounds into gear and doesnt shift at times.this has happened alot.incident happened in July 2014 when we were driving it stalled check engine light and transmission lights ( maybe same ) came on and we were nearly hit on road by another car.happened again too a few times called Jeep they said to drive it down to dealer and that they were having numerous problems with Jeep Cherokee, .we opted to have it flat bed with a tow truck to dealer as it was unsafe to drive. Car is in shop almost a week and dealer called says they reprogramed transmission and it is being test driven at dealer but still bangs into gear and is rough they actually say it will need to get used to driver and stop thuds into gear.unreal ! they actually said this with a new 37,000 SUV. Its clear this Jeep model was not tested rushed to market and is a sever safety issue.we are actually afraid to drive this Jeep !

When car was shifting gears it jerked the whole car and them the screen said service transmission. Tried pushing on the gas to go and would barely move. Tried switching to neutral and then drive again and could push the pedal to the floor and no power. Then put the car in neutral restarted the car and got a little power back but would not go into reverse. The screen kept saying when tried to put into reverse to put it in park and them select gear but would not go into reverse. Finally made it home and turned the car off for a bit and restarted and it would let us go into reverse but still has transmission light on. I took the vehicle back a few days after I bought it and told them it was not shifting right. They told me there were some updates and fixed them but it never fixed it. I am very disappointed with Jeep knowing they had an issue and still put their cars out there to be sold. I wish people were honest and not sell vehicles that have known issues!

Cherokee 4-cyl

The 9-spd automatic will rev high in first gear until the vehicle is steady at 10 mph and slam hard into second gear. Shifting from second gear to third is rough as well. Happens every day upon engine start. When the car has been warmed up from driving for approximately 15 minutes it goes away, but begins again upon being shut off and cooled down. This rough shifting is potentially damaging/destroying the automatic transmission and causes the driver/passengers to "jerk around" in their seats.

When we bought the 2014 Jeep Cherokee it was new. There was no issue with the transmission until we had owned it for about a month. Then it started having a rough shimmy as it searched for the correct gear going from 0 to 10 mph and then 10 to 20 mph. Once it reaches about 25 miles per hour there is no issue with the shifting. We have had it back to the dealership 3 times. Each time they said it was fixed, but upon leaving the lot, it did the same thing I had taken it in for to begin with. With Jeep's update, we now have a long pause going up hill before it gives a rough shift at about 5 mph and then continues to shimmy at 10 to 20 mph. I was told on the third visit they would submit a report to the manufacturer to see what the next step should be to fix the Jeep since the updates did not work. However, they tried the same thing again and said they thought it was fixed, but it wasn't. upon completion of the second visit I was told it needed to get use to my driving pattern" what exactly does that mean? what if more than one of us drive the vehicle" I am getting the run-around from Jeep on a product they shouldn't have sold me in the first place. Everything I read prior to the purchase raved about the 9 speed transmission. Unfortunately, that was incorrect since the transmissions in the 2014 Jeep Cherokee all have the same issue and Jeep doesn't really know how to fix them. I believe I need a new transmission; but will have to force Jeep to do it and hope it works. My time is work something - just fix it. It's a lemon in my opinion.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled without warning. The contact also mentioned that the service transmission and the brake warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the computer needed to be reset. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who replaced the entire transmission but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 9,000.

Cherokee 6-cyl

  • 700 miles
As described in previous published complaints, the transmission on my 2014 Jeep Cherokee trail hawk is malfunctioning (software and/or hardware) almost from the start. The last incident--after a previous service at a Jeep dealership--was the worst. While sitting at a stop sign (on my way to another dealership to have the vehicle serviced again for "service transmission" message), the "D" started flashing and the message"shift to P then desired gear" appeared. I followed the message's instructions but as I shifted into "D" the vehicle lunged forward (slightly into the near lane of the cross street). If a pedestrian had been walking in front of the vehicle (crossing the street) at that moment he or she may have been hit. If a car had been passing on the cross street in the near lane there could have been an accident. Fiat Chrysler delayed the sale of the Jeep Cherokee because of software problems. It appears to me from this site --(and other Jeep Cherokee forums) and from Fiat Chrysler's CEO's own words--that the software problems have not been properly addressed. NHTSA needs to act.

Erratic shifting, both upshifting and downshifting. Causes car to jerk forward when down and up shifting. Car came to a complete stopped then lunged forward causing me to bump into another car. The car down shifted then felt like it was in neutral then jumped into gear again and jumped forward. This car has less than 4000 miles on it now and has been in the shop twice to address this issue since we had it, but the issue still exist. I am deeply worried about this since my wife is afraid to drive the car at times now. It's not clear what Chrysler was thinking when they released vehicles with faulty transmissions. Not only is this a safety issue, this problem also devalues the car. Who would want to purchase or accept this car as a trade-in with a known transmission problem?

Within 10 days of the purchase of my new Jeep Cherokee trailhwak I was traveling slowly through a parking lot and approached a speed bump. After traveling over the speed bump I depressed the accelerator when I noticed the vehicle would not accelerate and the transmission sounded as if it was grinding and almost as of something was loose. That particular issue always happens when traveling over a speed bump. I'm now 7 months into ownership and the transmission is very sluggish. Hesitation is normal when accelerating from a stop and really nearly constant. When the car was new I just assumed it was a slow/sluggish transmission but after reading much feedback I understand now it is very common.

Transmission safety complaint : built 1/2014 delivered 6/2014 purchased Jeep Cherokee on June 2, 2014 with 170 miles on odometer from capo motors dba orange coast Chrysler, Jeep ). returned Jeep to sales agent June 10, 2014 complaining of transmission not shifting from forward stopped position correctly.he informed us that transmission must adjust to us. ( 1 ) Jeep seems to down shift to a neutral mode even though the transmission indicates Jeep is in the drive gear mode. When applying gas to the Jeep the transmission hesitates then lunges forward requiring driver to apply the brakes to avoid rear ending vehicle in front. ( 2 ) when applying gas the Jeep seems to " quick " shift from lower 1-3 gears to middle gears with excess strong loud force. ( 3 ) when driving down ca. 18 steep mountain two lane highway from 5500 ft. To 1500 ft..in drive mode the Jeep suddenly shifted into neutral when gas was applied rounding a hair pin bend. I could not apply the breaks because of heavy July 4th. Boat trailer traffic behind me. I shifted to manual from drive and the number 9 drive mode was indicated. I then move the gear shift to drive minus and 2 mode was indicated. The Jeep then lunged to a slower speed. I was able to regain control of Jeep to round the bend and immediately pulled to the side of the mountain road. ( 4 ) Jeep gets very poor mileage, seems to have high RPM and seems to be stuck in too low of gear on highway. ( 5 ) in city driving any 90 degree stop light turn from a stand still position requires diligence and extreme caution due to transmission hesitation and erratic nature of problem. ( 6 ) transmission oil has had a foul smell at times.

After 2 days owning this vehicle the transmission began to have issues shifting from park to drive and reverse. I also got "service transmission" warning lights and "service parking brake" warning lights. The vehicle went in for service and was in the shop for 3 days. 2 months later I had the same issue and the vehicle went in for service for 4 days. 2 months later the vehicle went in for service for the same thing for 8 days. Currently the vehicle has been in for service a 4th time for the same thing for 3 days so far. Problems range from hesitation and/or jumping into gear from park to drive or reverse, rough shifting at all speeds and parking brake intermittently engaging when placing the vehicle in reverse from park.
