Vehicle experienced total failure at 65 mph. I was told this was due to a corroding fuel tank, caused by additives used by gas manufacturers. Apparently the corroding tank "pieces/slivers/shards/etc." Clog the fuel filter/fuel pump and does not allow fuel to reach the engine. Chrysler has since changed the construction of their tank to account for this problem. However, I had to wait in excess of 2 weeks for a tank because of a (quote form the dealer) "national backorder" on fuel tanks. Upon further investigation, I have found this to be a widespread problem (it's what's causing the backorder, as best as I can determine). The warranty company I have extended coverage through (wynns), told me that they are so familiar with it that they have instituted a procedure to deny any claim arising to Chrysler tanks since it is a problem stemming from the Chrysler design. My real problem arises from the fact that while this issue is so far reaching to cause a national backorder on Chrysler tanks, getting Chrysler as a corporation to admit the problem is impossible (of course) although the local Jeep dealer is aware of it. If it is a known problem, I as a consumer should have received some notice about potentially corrosive tanks, or perhaps there should be a recall on this item. The fuel tank failure causes a complete stoppage of the vehicle, as I learned travelling 65 mph on rte. 81S in Pennsylvania with my 7 month pregnant wife and 1.5 year old son in the car. I thankfully was able to get the car to the side of the road, but it was inoperable thereafter. I have since had the tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, and O2 sensor replaced at a cost of $1023. While I would like to see Chrysler halp me out with a portion of this since it is the tank design/construction that caused the failure, I ultimately would like to see them alert their customers about the potential of the vehicle shutting down.

Consumer was calling in regard to NHTSA recall 97V194002N/ manufacturer's recall 755. While attempting to pull into traffic vehicle ran out of gas, although gas gauge read 1/4 of a tank. Dealer has been contacted for this problem, but refused to remedy problem free of charge even though vehicle was experiencing same problem. Consumer's vehicle was manufactured three days after the cut-off date as stated on recall. When the driver depresses the gas the vehicle bogs down and then takes off, the driver's door dome light is inoperative intermittently due to open circuit, dealer replaced dome light switch. Nlm

While driving 70 mph vehicle suddenly stalled. Towed to dealer who noticed the vehicle was out of fuel, yet fuel gauge showed 1/2 a tank. Fuel sending unit needed to be replaced. There was recall 97V194002, but per Chrysler this vehicle was not affected due to VIN. The failed part was on order, and was not part of the recall. The sudden stalling of the vehicle makes driving it very dangerous.

Dealership informed her that it sounded like fuel sending unit could possibly be defective, but her vehicle was not included in recall 97V194000. The problems with the fuel pump and fuel tank sending unit started several months after the vehicle was purchased. The vehicle would stall and/or jerk on the highway as though it was running out of gas. We thought that we must have just purchased some bad gas (water in the gas tank) so we really did not think there was a real problem. Also, the distance til empty (dte) digital gauge has always fluctuated up and down with its readings. The problem was especially noted when the vehicle contained 1/4 or less tank of gas. Through research, we found that a fuel tank sending unit recall (#755) was issued for 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee built through June 1, 1997. Our vehicle was built July 1997. Our vehicle, and probably many more 1997 vehicles, should have been included in the recall. At this point, we have no recourse adsent of a recall on our VIN number.

As per NHTSA campaighn number 97V194000. The recall only covers Jeep from Sep 1996 to Nov 1996 my Jeep was manufactured in June 1996 and it has the same problem that the Jeep in your recall has. We just recently purchased the Jeep and my wife almost crashed because the Jeep was showing 3/4 0F a tank and the Jeep sharply decelerated on the interstate in heavy traffic causing her to be ran off the road. Not to mention the hassle of being stuck on the side of the road. The dealor as usual was not cooperative and said too bad it is not covered due to the month of the recall vehicles. Pleas can you help. Thank you chip perkins.
