Grand Cherokee 4WD

I have repeatedly replaced the rotors on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. At highway speeds the braking is uneven and pulsates jerking the steering wheel. Chrysler has replaced the rotors every 6000 miles on my vehicle but has not been able to solve the problem. When the dealer is questioned about the problem they say that it continues with the 2000 and 2001 models. Obviously Chrysler is not addressing the problem. If I do not replace the brakes the problem gets worse. This is a dangerous situation and Chrysler ignores nlm

problem #201

Aug 251999

Grand Cherokee

  • miles
Rotors have warped after about 7000 to 8000 miles resulting in lurching when trying to stop vehicle. Front rotors have been replaced twice and all rotors resurfaced 4 times by dealer, 3 times under warranty and 3 times at my expense. As rotors get bad, stopping distances increase and vehicle is difficult to control when stopping from highway speeds. Vehicle has only been driven in Florida, and has not been driven in salt water or off-road. First problem reported to dealer when vehicle was 8 months old and had 9294 miles on odometer. The problem recurred again, each time, approximately 7000 to 9000 miles following the last brake service.

problem #200

Mar 012002

Grand Cherokee 4WD

  • miles
The front brake rotors on this vehicle have warped four times. The first occurred July 1999 at 6125 miles, the rotors were turned on the vehicle at this time. The second instance occurred October 2000. The front rotors and pads were replaced at this time. The third occurence came at 32,460 miles in August 2001. The front rotors were turned at this time. The brakes began to chatter again at around 38,000 miles and are getting progressivly worse. There has to be something wrong with either the design of this braking system, or the material used in the manufacture of the brake rotors. Four times in 39,000 miles seems to be a high incidence for a vehicle used only for commuting. The dealer was very good about taking care of the first three incidences under warranty. I doubt if this will continue now that the warranty has run out, and the extended warranty does not cover brakes.

Grand Cherokee 4WD

  • miles
Rotors are shot and it seems I'm not the only one, 4 wheel drive will not disengage even after I shift it out of 4 wheel drive (large popping noise when it does disengage). Rear wiper works sometimes and othertimes it won't. now I'm being told the transfer case is leaking and needs to be replaced (seal and shaft). At 53,000 miles these items seem ridculous. I've checked around on the internet and it seems like others have the same problems.

problem #197

Feb 012002

Grand Cherokee 4WD

  • miles
Rotors keep warping every 6000 to 1000 miles. Daimler Chrysler will no longer repair/replace the rotors. This is a safety issue. The steering wheel vibrates wildly and you have to hold on and I'm sure it is not braking properly due to the warpage. They continually get worse until you cannot drive the jgc until they are replaced. There was an earlier recall on these and DaimlerChrysler has not fixed the problem. They should be made responsible for the rotors until they coorect the problem. The recall should continue on every jgc until they fix the problem. They should not be allowed to push the replacement cost of replacing the rotors off onto the consumer.they should not be allowed to put these vehicles on the road until this is fixed or they are made fully responsible for the replacement.

problem #195

Feb 182002

Grand Cherokee 4WD

  • miles
Both front brake rotors have been replaced 3 times. The rear rotors have been been replaced 2 times. The front rotors are being replaced every 8,000 miles on the average. This is a serious flaw in brake rotors. Chrysler needs to redesign the rotors with slots and/or a different material.

Grand Cherokee 4WD

Since buying this vehicle in 1999, I have had to replace the rotors or have them turned at least 2-3 times per year. I have talked to many people about this problem. I have even talked to Jeep technicians. Everyone tells me that Jeep had a bad batch of metal in 1999. If this is true, why do they not recall all 1999 Jeep? I know that it takes a certain amount of complaints or accidents before something is done. For now I quess that I can only hope for the NHTSA to get the ball rolling. It would be much appreciated by all 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners.
