Took to dealer 6 times for transmission problems. Dealer told me that they don't know how to fix. Was in a fender bender on 7-25-99 do to transmission hesitation and jerking. Going to arbitration on 8-9-99.

The automatic transmission has an erratic hard clunk shift from 1 to 2, as well as a down shift from 3 to 2, dealer says this is normal. The vehicle pulls to the right, dealer confirmed that the left rear toe was out of spec., dealer slotted rear trailing arm mounting point, but car still pulls to the right.
- Salem, OR, USA
Computer control of transmission failed, repairs are not possible. Transmission computer must be replaced.

Our 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee is 4 months old and is nothing but trouble; the transfer case was replaced, the car makes a grinding noise at highway speeds and the dealer thought the replacement of the transfer case would solve the problem. It didn't however. Furthermore the gear oil had to be replaced because the car would buck and even stall sometimes when I would make tight turn. Furthermore the transmission is sometimes clunking. Our power window needs a new motor. The car keeps on pulling to the right and that still hasn't been fixed. We have been very disappointed and wish the lemon law would be a little bit more protective of consumers than car dealers and manufacturers.

From park to reverse grinding/clicking, & squeaking noise same from park to drive. 2nd gear and 3rd gears slipping/vehicle hesitation. Dealer has tried to fix 5 times, and dealer does not know how to fix it.
- Semmes, AL, USA
The automatic transmission failed and had to be replaced after about 6000 miles. There is a lot of noise from the rear, sounds like it is coming from the differential or axle. It is loud enough to be heard over the radio. The front rotors appear to be warped. When braking at highway speeds, the steering wheel shudders. It does not feel safe.

Low beams dim, visibility approx. 30 feet. Both headlight lenses have cloudy film inside. I have noticed this on several vehicles at dealer
- Kingwood, TX, USA
When shifting into "reverse" the transmission slams very hard into reverse in such a manner that I have never experienced in twenty years of driving. When it slams into reverse, it makes a loud noise and the Jeep would lunge but for my foot on the brake. I took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that this was normal on all 1999 Grand Cherokee. I question whether this is normal.

While in reverse and going into drive, the vehicle stalled unexpectedly which might have caused an accident. Also, when starting vehicle with the headlight switch on, the headlights go off when instructed to be on. Been to dealer several times. Dealer cannot determine problem, they say it might be the computer module, but have not fixed that part.

Vehicle experiences backfires, jumps forward when stopping and RPM's fluctuate continually, replacement of transmission did not rectify problems.

While driving to work the transmission got stuck in first gear and would not shift into second gear or anyother gear for that matter. I was stuck driving a maximum of 20 mph to work. I had to get the vehicle towed to the dealership. Since then I have had problems with the transmission shift hard between first and second grear. (dealer has tried making adjustments which do not seem to help). I also have noticed that when shifting into reverse a loud whinning noise can be heard from the transmission. The dealer says this is normal. The reason for this is the transmission is filling up with fluid. I find this explanation unacceptable I have never heard a noise like this from my 1993 Grand Cherokee or anyother car for that matter. I have read hundreds of reports of unsatisfied 1999 Grand Cherokee owners with transmission problems, and I think Chrysler needs to do something about it. I have asked Jeep to replace my entire transmission several times, but they refused.
- San Diego, CA, USA
Vehicle sag/hesitate, attempt to stall upon acceleration, dealer duplicated problem on test drive, but unable to fix. Noted transmission fluid was also 1 quart low, unusual for new vehicle.
- Los Angeles, CA, USA
