2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland heated seat no longer works prior to it quitting, it would get very hot and have to be shut off I was advised that there was a recall & when I called the dealer they said my 2002 Jeep was not inlcuded--maybe someone should look into including additional 2002 Jeep Cherokee-

My 2002 Jeep Cherokee limited front driver seat brackets have broken on all 4 legs where they bolt onto the floor.. I had them welded back and it appeared sturdy until the other day when I went to get into the seat... the left upper front brace broke completely thru. I called cross Jeep in louisville ky, to replace this part... they said I had to pay $331 in advance and couldn't give me a very good date when the order will be filled... he pulled up current orders from Dec 2009 and the eta on their seats was June 2010.. this is a major safety problem.... its like not wearing a seat belt because you are not strapped down to anything...

My drivers seat has broken off of my car offering no support in the event of an accident. The bracket that holds the seat onto the car broke at the base where the bolts hold it onto the car. If just sitting in the seat breaks it how well will this hold up in the event of an accident? getting into an accident at a highway speed could totally break the seat off of the car and offer no help in the event of a crash. In my opinion the seat should never break off of the car. The seat and the seatbelt are the only things offering me support in the event of an accident. I have had older cars before this one with more miles that have never had this problem.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee heated seat failure and fire, the heated seat stopped working on investigation of the cause it was discovered that the carbon fiber element in the seat cushion had failed and burned the surrounding foam and seat cover material.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland 10 way heated power memory seat. The original seat heater element burnt up in winter of 2006. The mechanic who fixed the car said that there was a noticeable burn marks on the leather underside of the seat cushion. The replacement unit burnt again in 2008. I then decided against paying for the repair again. Now Chrysler has recalled over a 100000 Jeep for seat problem under recall J17. I am told by Chrysler my 2002 is not involved in the recall. I feel if it is not, it should be. Apparently they have a problem also since the original repair was only 100 dollars and when it happened the second time it was over 300 dollars.

My son's 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee driver's seat started wobbling and then completely broke loose from the frame. He is 240 lbs and was just driving normally. Over time... the wobbling gradually got worse. The seat completely broke loose as he was accelerating after waiting for a stop light. I removed the seat to see what was wrong and saw that both brackets that are welded to the front rod that runs parallel with the front of the drivers seat were cracked and the front bolt on the door side of the drivers seat ripped right through the flimsy metal bracket on the base of the seat. This structural defect is "life threatening." He almost fell backwards into the back seat. Had there been other cars coming at this intersection, he would not have been able to react. I checked the internet and saw that this seat/structural defect on Jeep goes back to 1999. How can the NHTSA and Jeep/Chrysler ignore this problem for years? this should be a safety recall. Jeep should be held responsible for fixing this problem now. Given all the blogs related to this issue... they sure won't win in court.

Approximately mid January, the driver's side heated seat cushion overheated and caught fire. Luckily turning off the switch extinguished the fire. However it left a couple of inch long burn mark in the leather seat cover. We had been noticing "hot spots" in the heating element, and my wife had placed a fleece hood on the seat to sit on. This also received some melting but saved her from any burns. Discussion with family and friends lead to the discovery of a recall involving Jeep heated seats. I contacted my local dealership and was informed that my vehicle did not fall under the recall guidelines. Recall was for '03 & '04 models, I have a '02. I asked if they would cover the repairs anyway as the problem was the same, they declined. I then contacted Chrysler/Jeep by phone. I received the same response from a representative and the supervisor. When I asked about an appeals process they said I had just been through it by talking to the supervisor. My understanding of the '03/'04 recall is that both driver and passenger seats and seat back heating elements would be replaced due to potential failure. I am concerned that just fixing the "broken part" would leave the possibility of this occurring on the other seat also. I have not replaced this as yet. We are just not using the heated seats. I am in the process of checking on various replacement options and prices such as factory parts, replacement with aftermarket parts, etc. I wonder what options are available besides paying for this repair myself?

Manufacturers recall F17 starts with date of manufacture of September 2002. Chrysler acknowledges the problem but will not expand the recall dates.
