: the contact stated while driving 25 mph through a commercial area during very hot weather conditions the vehicle began to vibrate. The vibration occurred right before the cooling system caused the vehicle to run at high temperatures and over heat resulting in a blown engine cooling fan. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic shop where the mechanic determined that the failure was caused by the shroud and the plastic blade of the electric motor fan. I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It started to overheat, leak and smoke, coolant fan broke and tore right through the cover. I now need repairs totaling approximately $2600 due to the coolant fan malfunctioning. I thought I could get it repaired at the dealer for no cost since there was a coolant fan recall on this particular vehicle because I have the same year, make and model. I was told that even though there was a recall on the same SUV that I have, my VIN number was not included in the recall, therefore there is nothing that can be done for me. Due to the coolant fan breaking, I need a new cylinder head, radiator, cooling fan motor and coolant fan realignment. I have to pay for all of this myself just because they did not include my VIN number in the recall.

I was driving and felt a bump. I stopped and got out and looked under the vehicle, behind the vehicle and in front of the vehicle and a fellow motorist looked and saw a piece of black plastic in the street under and pointed to it. Got back in the vehicle and drove to my destination and parked, came back and cranked it up and was pulling out, noticed what looked like smoke was coming from the vehicle and the temp gauge needle went into the danger zone. After noticing this I started heading to the dealership, but stopped to keep from during any further damage and called a wrecker. Upon arrival at the dealership I informed them what happened. After they examined the vehicle, they informed me that the fan had broken and knocked a hole in radiator and broke the fan shroud.

11-18-05 driving my car on freeway, heard a "pop" sound, then loss of fluids. Drove off nearest exit to nearby service center. Plastic cooling fan broke apart sending pieces into the front of the radiator, cutting and splicing it. The entire casing/shroud of the fan was cracked on the bottom and top, as well as several blades of the fan broken out. Chrysler refuses to cover the damage stating it is past the warranty time of 3 years or 36,000 miles!!! I now have tp spend $1200 to fix as well as rental car for 1 week while they were "evaluating" the situation. Heeeellllp!!

The consumer stated that there was a NHTSA engineering analysis EA05020 concerning the engine and engine cooling fan. The consumer's vehicle manifested the same problems as indicated in this analysis. The fan of the motor exploded, resulting in extensive damage to the radiator. The vehicle was towed to a dealership, where it is currently being repaired for this problem. (11/23/05) the steering was noisy and would grind on high idle, the vehicle would shake when braking due to the front disc pads wearing low and the front rotors and the pinion seal leaked.

Driving at approximate speed of 35 mph, I heard a loud boom (like something had hit the car), I stopped and checked and saw nothing. All gauges displayed normal ranges and I checked all fluids and visually looked around the engine area from the top. Everything appeared normal, but six days later without further noise or warning signs the engine temp peaked max, while sitting in a parking lot. Tested the engine as directed per the manual and no good. A tow was initiated to a repair shop the end result was the fan had broken into pieces and gone into the radiator and through to another section. Total cost of repair was over $1500 and I am still have problems with leaking transmission fluid that is being addressed all related to the fan coming apart and flying into other engine parts.

I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. About a week ago while driving I heard a loud pop come from the engine. When I stopped to examine the problem, I saw a large leak coming from the bottom of my car. After looking under the hood, I saw that the plastic cooling fan in my engine had shattered and the pieces punctured my radiator. The shroud covering my cooling fan had also been shattered. I immediately took the Jeep to my local Chrysler dealer (whom I bought the car from). After looking at it they told me there was major damage caused by this incident. In addition to needing a new cooling fan, shroud and radiator, I also needed a new head gasket because the car had overheated. I believe there was a defect with the plastic fan which led to the damage to my car. I have contacted Chrysler about this situation and they said there is nothing they will do. I was driving on sr 70 when I felt my Jeep slugging then I looked at the gauge and noticed that it was all the way to the boiling point. Then I pulled over to the side of the road because I wasn't sure what had happened. Called my dad he came and looked at my Jeep and found that the fan had busted we had been able to put enough water in it to get it to wal-mart where we came to the conclusion that it had a hole in the radiator. There was pieces everywhere from the shroud. The next day had it towed to firkins in bradenton it was out of warranty so I ended up paying $1131.45 for this to be fixed. Now ever since this has been fixed my check engine light comes on for awhile then goes off. This happened with the fan on 8/17/04 now both power windows in the back are not working just the other day my son got out of the Jeep shut the door and down came the window neither of the back windows work had it checked out and it will cost me $300 per window for the bearings what is going to happen next the front ones. I thought when I bought this brand I was getting a good value but turns out all I have had is a nightmare.

While stopped in a parking space, check gauge light came on. Vehicle temperature gauge was at 260 degree. I shut off engine and opened hood. The electric fan had shattered and put a hole through the fan shroud and the radiator. Parts of the shattered fan were lodged in the serpentine belt pulleys.
