Heater system fails and will not blow hot air. Blend door, and motor replacement is required at a cost of $800. I have a 2001 and 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee both of which have failed. One failed two times. Each repair is $800+.

The contact owns a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact noticed that the heating and cooling system did not work. She called the local dealer and they instructed her to bring the vehicle in for inspection. While driving at an unknown speed to the dealer, she noticed freon rising from the instrument panel. As a result, other components of the engine and engine cooling system began to fail. The air conditioning and heater no longer worked. The dealer stated that not only had her blower motor and resister failed, but the heater core, evaporator core, actuator, and blend door (which no longer provided heat on the driver side of the vehicle) were corroded as well. The dealer further stated that the freon from the instrument panel originated from the evaporator core, indicating the presence of ethanol (toxic gas). The manufacturer has not offered any assistance and stated that the failures were due to lack of maintenance. Currently, the estimated cost that the contact has spent on repairs is $2,000. The vehicle is at the dealer and has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 91,000 and current mileage was 91,350.

A little over a year ago I had coolant leaking into my car on the passenger side, had to get a new heater core ($800) then when they finished no heat was coming out, it was the blend door so they had to redo all the work in getting in there ($350 after I complained), 3 months ago, same problem heater core leak ($920), now 3 months after that I have no heat, took it in last week, blend door problem and $730. I have no heat in my Jeep!! I cannot believe they do not have a recall for this problem with so many people having the same issue and I have had it twice! something should be done.

I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland with 60,000 miles. The events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield, (2) fogging of front passenger windows, (3) failure of passenger heat and driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on both sides of Jeep. Consequently, (1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. To correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. According to the certified service department at the local Jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems.

Air blend doors located deep inside dashboard have failed on my car & thousands of others. This causes the drivers compartment to typically freeze during winter months. Even though it is an admitted manufacturing defect, Chrysler will not issue a recall because it is not deemed enough of a safety issue. Since repairs are $1K or more, many people are putting off service or trying homemade remedies to fix the problem. Thus going without the repair or trying to do it yourself you make the drivers compartment very unsafe. Chrysler is making a huge profit off this repair and their service centers admit this.

The system cannot be made to use hot or cold air on demand. In investigating this failure, it has come to my attention that 99% of all other owners of this vehicle report experiencing a failure of the 'temperature blend control doors' within the 'A/C blend assembly'. consequences: The vehicle demister is unable to clear the front windshield of mist/fogging (effectively, depending on outside temperature). Corrections: No corrections have been performed due to cost prohibitive expense to do so. The local dealerships quote a price of around $1800 to repair the failure, while obtaining parts and performing self-repair will cost upwards of $300 plus time spent.
