I bought my gd Cherokee used with 71K miles. I just had my first oil change before heading out on a camping trip for the weekend. On the return trip, I had just turned onto the highway (55 mph zone). I am 6'4" tall. The previous owner was shorter than me. The seat was in the wrong position (I now know). While switching from gas pedal to brake pedal, my knee hit the key in the ignition. The car turned off. I immediately reached for the key and turned the car back on. It lunged the way a manual transmission dose when the clutch is let out too quick. I moved my seat back away from the wheel. Now I drive it from farther back, which means I need to sit up straighter, which means my head hits the ceiling often. I have the limited edition and I love everything about it except the seat can't go down far enough for me to drive it comfortable without turning the car off which has got to be horrible for the car.

While departing philadelphia airport, entering ramp to access interstate 95, the vehicle lost all power, engine, power steering and brakes would not work. Head lights were still functioning. We physically pushed the vehicle off the highway, so other drivers and municipal bus drivers would stop screaming at us. The vehicle would not start. After calling the police and a tow truck, about 30 minutes later, the vehicle started. We had the vehicle towed to our home 100 miles away in New Jersey. The vehicle would start and remain running for about 15 minutes, then would shut down again, same issues. Several sensor codes came up on a readout but nothing has been done to the vehicle. At this point it is functioning, but we are afraid to drive the vehicle. Any help or recall info on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Back in February I got notice of the following recall and had it performed eventhough was not having the problem. Safety recall N23/ NHTSA 13V-175. Reprogram final drive controller module. 2005 - 2010. (wk) Jeep Grand Cherokee. 2006 - 2010. (xk) Jeep commander, after this recall was perfrom 4low would not work. We were able to reset the module by resetting a fuse but, this only lasted a few months. In June the 4low stopped working again. Because we heard there was a new service bulletin out we took it back again for another flash. This time they were also wanting to replace the acutator motor, which was not available. Other people who have had this part replaced have been unsucessful. On top of this my dealer was telling me I had to pay for this part and they are claiming it is not tied to the N23 recall. We have not paid to have this part replaced because I don't feel I should have to pay for something that is Chrysler doing. It is clear that the software updates have caused these issues to arise and chrylser is not owning up to it. I feel NHTSA needs to inforce that when a recall is made it truely needs to be done and the fix really works. If issues arise with a recall NHTSA needs to make sure the company makes it right.the Chrysler customer care center is a joke. No one can answer your questions, concerns and calls are not return. Making us go back and forth for updates that continue to not fix the real problem and making us replace parts that don't fix the problem is not the right solution. It forces consumers to not have recalls performed. NHTSA needs make chrylser answer and fix this correctly. A vehicle that cannot go into 4low or neutral is just as unsafe!

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Consumer writes in regards to transfer case actuator recall problems. The consumer stated he complied with the recall notice he received in the mail. The dealer reprogrammed the final drive controller module. Four weeks later, the vehicle caught on fire. The consumer stated he didn't have any problems with the vehicle, prior to the recall repair. The consumer stated after a short time of driving on the expressway, it felt as though the vehicle was not shifting into the next higher gear and would not shift into the higher gear when he pressed the accelerator. While driving in the right lane, the vehicle went into neutral on its own and the vehicle began to coast. When he looked in the rear view mirror, he noticed gray smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle and then the gray exhaust smoke, turned black. Within less than a minute, the consumer was on the shoulder and two-inch red flames began emitting from under the hood. Then the flames were five to six feet high above the car hood. The local fire department and police were called to the scene.

The ignition switch on this car is in failure mode. All dashboard lights, speedometer flash or or down to zero speed. This only happens momentarily as the lights and speedometer come right back on. It seems that it happens more when the temperature is between 30 to 40 degrees farenheit. I had this car in for service for this problem to bedford Chrysler(814-623-1141 in bedford, Pennsylvania multiple times. The problem would not recreate itself. Once when driving at highway speeds, it flashed multiple times. I reached for the ignition key and moved it slightly, the problem immediately stopped. I have been following the ignition switch recall but not sure if this is an affected model. Once I noticed this problem, I had my wife try the same thing with the keys, and the problem would go away for her. I do not have exact dates of occurences, but I do know it has happened multiple times. The car never shut itself down with this problem.

On May 22, 2014 I took my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4 X 4 with 5.7L hemi engine for recall #N23 reprogram final drive control module. The mileage at that time was 93758. After that "fix" everything seemed to run okay then on July 2, 2014 due to a grinding sound in the rear, my sons father in law checked the codes and found the emergency brake tone ring show. Also on the dashboard a "service 4 wheel drive system" message appeared. He replaced the right rear hub assembly and both emergency brake shoes, but when he went to test drive the vehicle, he said it wouldn't shift correctly. I believe he said it wouldn't shift out of 4 wheel low. Vehicle did also stall also he said. He checked internet and found loads of reports of this model and year Jeep vehicle having problems only after having the N23, NHTSA id# 13V175000. Recall "fix" performed. Mine was done at tri-cities Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram at kingsport, tn. It appears to be a computer related problem, as that's what was reprogrammed for the recall. I am disabled and need the Jeep to haul my handicapped scooter and me with my wife driving. It's essential that it's not out of service. I called the aforementioned dealer service department today and spoke to "greg" who said he could check it out. I had my sons father in law call him to fully explain what was dysfunctional as he was the one that experienced the problem and thus fully tell [xxx] about it. I was told that [xxx] said we could tow it in at our expense (not drive it) and he'd check it, but until a recall notice is received, anything done would be charged to me. Please expedite these thousands of complaints asap. I need my vehicle. I don;T have bus or taxi service, and with my disabilities (fused left hip, mainly) I can't ride in most vehicles because of leg room. While driving for about 20mins the was a hard shift and my truck was stuck in 3rd gear and the check engine light came on. I took it to a mechanic and he said it could be the shift solenoid and it would cost 700 to take my transmission apart to check it. $700 later im still having the problem I bought the car at 82K im now at 92K I keep up regular service. What is weird is when I turn my turn my truck back on its no longer in 3rd and it stays that way for sometimes weeks but it comes back surely.

While driving the ignition switch position turns to the accessory position. The engine initially turns off and then resumes running. The air conditioner turns off and remains off, the headlights flash on and off and then turn off, and all the dash lights flicker on and off several times and then they stay on as if in the accessory position. If I quickly and slightly turn the ignition key the car resumes a normal operating mode. I'm not sure what all else is turned off when this happens because I have not experimented with other electronics such as the windows, seats, etc. When this occurs. The problem seems to be caused if I bump the key ring with my knee or I hit a small bump in the road. At first the problem was intermittent and somewhat infrequent but over time the frequency has increased. As of late, this seems to happen about every time I drive the car.

Every time while driving the air bag light on dash is always on. Then upon driving, suddenly the seat belt alarm starts buzzing even though all seat belts are latched properly. Then the engine light will come on. Shortly after the dash goes completely black. All alarms and lights go out along with the heating/ac. This is on a routine basis.

While driving West on I-8 in Arizona vehicle went completely dead without warning, power steering was lost, etc. Fortunately I was able to steer the vehicle onto side of the highway and bring to a stop. Traffic was virtually no-existent on this stretch of the road otherwise a crash of some kind would most likely take place. As we were in the middle of now where I immediately attempted to start the vehicle up again which it did without a problem. I was able to drive away and vehicle seemed to drive perfectly normal. I recently had the same problem happen again. And, again, I happen to be on a road with very little traffic so I was able to pull over and again the vehicle started up again without a hitch. I attributed the problem to the location of the ignition switch which makes it almost impossible not to bump into the key with your right knee anytime you're traveling long distances and wind up moving your feet around just to stretch them. I now realize that's a much larger problem than that.

Dash light flicker on and off and message reads service brake system check and advise. Brakes completely replaced a year ago and only drive 7500 miles per year. It is not the brakes. We have researched internet and feel it is an ignition switch problem and pervasive with others as well. If just one key in ignition with no other weight of other keys attached, no problem. However, problem surfaces when any weight of additional keys attached. It almost stalls the car when it hits sometimes. Congress is opening up a probe with Chrysler now and it should be expedited. Car at dealership twice in past month for this problem and still not fixed. We have had prior problems in previous years of ownership as well. It is similar to recent testimony from General Motors on their defective ignition issues.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer who reprogrammed the final drive controller module and performed the recall repair; however, the remedy lasted two weeks. The service all wheel drive system warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle would not shift into neutral. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that failure was an electrical surge that did not allow the gear shift to function properly. The dealer reprogrammed the computer software for the shifting mechanism. The failure recurred approximately eight times since the software was reprogrammed. The vehicle was being towed on a mobile home; however, the gear shift would get stuck in low shift and failed to shift into neutral gear. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 55493.

After having safety recall N23 done to my Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L I have since been locked out of 4-wheel low. The N23 safety recall for my vehicle has not worked as it has created another safety issue by me not having my 4-low in a state (Colorado) that I use 4-low in for winter and for recreation use. I was almost trapped in the cold mountains due to not knowing the N23 recall deactivated my 4-low. Not only if this a safety issue but my vehicles value has diminished greatly as now it's a 2wd vehicle.

After dealer performed recall 13V175000, traction control is inoperative but no lights are illuminated to indicate the failure of the traction control system. Also, shifting the transfer case is inoperative. No warning lights or informational messages are displayed to indicate the loss of functionality. Dealer has cleared codes and replaced parts multiple times, but the problem remains. Safety issues are: 1. driving in remote areas in low range, and being unable to shift into high range prevents driving on paved roads... which could leave a driver stranded. 2. failure of traction control system could result in loss of control, especially in winter.
