problem #79

Dec 122018

Grand Cherokee

  • 70,759 miles
Engine stalls while driving without warning. This started in November 2018 and has happened 5 times since. Have taken it to 3 different repair shops and still no resolution. There was a recall back in 2015 #15V-115 to fix the fuel pump relay which could cause this to happen. Service was done per the recall. Have an active case with Jeep (Fiat) but they have been no help and keep sending us the Jeep dealer. Diagnostics have been done 3 times to no avail. This is a significant safety issue as the vehicle dies while driving and the steering locks up as well as the brakes. Each time this happens the vehicle is in motion going about 40mph. Has happened while going straight and while turning. The radio stays on and no warning lights appear on the dashboard.

The truck continues to stall while operating and does not turn over when trying to restart. This prevents a quick reaction to being stalled when slowing to enter or exit at an intersection. On most occasions, the car will not start and continues to crank when either using the push start, manual key fob, or auto start. It cannot be moved once stalled. If you attempt to restart too quickly or after several attempts, it will flood. This same issue was included in a previous recall for the fuel pump relay. However, it did not resolve the issue. The same behavior is experienced and is very dangerous. To provide history of failed recalls, the brake shield recall was corrected by two seperate recalls and was also a very dangerous safety issue that prevents driver control over the vehicle when stopping. The stalling occurs when coming to a stop or stopping, and when performing strong turns. These types of turns are done frequently at intersections with on coming traffic. It is very dangerous because you don't even have the ability to restart the vehicle to escape the danger.

The fuel pump was replaced per recall and now the new external fuel pump is completely failed and my Jeep won't start at all. Sometimes it will start and other times I will be driving down the road or highway and the vehicle will just stall and turn off on me. Someone has to do something about this.

Per recall P54 external fuel pump relay was replaced by dealer. That external relay has now failed and the vehicle stalled driving down the road. Owner was able to control vehicle and drive to road side. External relay needs to be replaced with a better design or option to prevent a crash.

Vehicle in motion, but decelerating from higher speed to a stop or lower speed. Engine shuts off. No warning/dash lights come on everything else (radio, lights) continue to work. The only way to know the engine is no longer running is the power steering and power brakes don't work and the RPM on the tachometer go to zero. Car typically will re-start with no issue, but will almost immediately stop again. When the car sits for about 15-20 minutes, it'll start right up and drive fine. There has not been a pattern, other than slowing down. It's stalled on me the following times and situations: * slowing down to turn right off the highway - was raining, started right up after stall ran fine (2014) * slowing down to a complete stop at an intersection, would restart, but not stay running. Waited 20 minutes for towtruck and the vehicle started right up. (2016) * slowing to a stop for light in town, started right up, but would not remain running, waited 20 minutes ran fine (2016) * stalled in stopped traffic. Started right up was able to drive to a parking lot but stalled again and would not restart for 15-20 minutes. Ran fine once started again. (2017) * stalled in stop and go traffic on I-95 in philadelphia. Started right up again, but had to wait 20 minutes for it to remain running (03/2018) * stalled when coming to a stop for stop sign. Wouldn't start right up. Had to wait 15-20 minutes then it started and ran fine. (09/29/2018) have taken to the Jeep dealer on the three earlier occasions, however, they indicate that they are unable to replicate the situation and there are no engine codes to review - therefore they are unable to correct the situation. So I have been driving the vehicle as is, but after the last two times of this occurring I must remedy the issue. Assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Fuel pump relay recall R09 was performed in 2015. Relay that was installed during the recall failed in 2018 causing car to stall in heavy traffic and failing to start. Created a significant safety hazard as I was left sitting in the middle of a busy intersection in heavy traffic. The recall was supposed to fix this problem. Recall was not effective at solving the problem and Chrysler is now billing customers for the part and labor that the recall was supposed to fix.

The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee will crank with no start. The Jeep refuses to fire up, it will crank for long periods of time but will absolutely not start up. Could be an electrical issue or fuel pump relay or engine. Seems a lot of friends of mine are having the same issue with this very same model. Please help me with the defective car.

I have a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee - the fuel pump will turn off from time to time while vehicle is in motion. Sometimes on the highway as I am traveling 60+ miles per hour. It was diagnosed as a fuel pump relay problem, I discovered that there was an issue and a recall with these vehicles having fuel pump relay problems. I brought it into get fixed and is still turning off while I am driving, causing a very dangerous situation!

problem #70

Feb 092018

Grand Cherokee

  • 80,000 miles
Intermittent stalling usually during deceleration. Four times in the past 3-months. Twice while slowing for a right turn, once while slowing on a downgrade. The vehicle can only be restarted if in park forcing the need to come to a complete stop and shifting into park. The only indication is the loss of engine noise, power steering and confirming using the tachometer. This condition could lead to a rear collision on a busy road way, a roadway with no breakdown lane or trapped in a center land of a multilane road. Prior to the current stalling repairs per R09 / NHTSA 15V-115 were implemented. The repairs may not been effective.

Car had previously had R09 / NHTSA 14V-115 completed to fix a fuel pump issue. I have had the car in twice since then and informed Jeep that it is still having the same issue. The fuel pump has randomly stopped three times since the repair and is now having intermittent no start issues. The dealership could not duplicate and claims there is no issue. We replaced the battery hoping it would solve the issue to no avail. This is a huge safety issue and I have read of multiple people having the same problem. The car restarts each time, but it is the fact that it just randomly shuts off when it wants.

Alternator / electrical issues- November 4, 2016 my wife was taking our son to school when she began getting a burning smell from under the hood. After dropping off my son, she pulled over and noticed smoke coming from under the hood. She cut the car off, initially thinking it just overheated. We left the car in the school parking lot overnight hoping it would start up the next day. I tried to start the car, but it wouldn't start and the key got stuck in the ignition. After having it towed to a mechanic, we learned that the alternator suddenly failed, draining the battery and causing the engine stall. This is my second time submitting this complaint with no response from your organization.

While on a nearby highway the vehicle stalled out on me. I was able to get into shoulder and after, immediately after stalling out I attempted to start the car right away, it took about 4 attempts for vehicle to start up again. Took vehicle to the dealership they first diagnosed it being an issue with the key fob battery after being replaced the vehicle ran for about a week then the original problem reoccurred. This time in town in the middle of an intersection. Vehicle was not able to start and had to get vehicle towed. After taking it bake to the dealer they informed me that there was an issue with the primary and secondary fuel pumps.

The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously included in NHTSA campaign number: 15V115000 (electrical system), for which the fuel pump relay was replaced. Approximately two years after receiving the repair, the contact began to notice that the vehicle would crank, but failed to start. The contact would have to make several attempts to start the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to Chrysler fullerton (located at 1044 us route 22, East summerville, NJ, 08876; 908-722-2500) where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump relay failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that they were unable to provide another repair. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

Car stalled 2 times, towed to jim click Jeep in tucson R09. My fuel pump was replaced for $1284 at only 81,230 miles. I believe the go around fix of a cable vs replacing the computer caused my fuel pump to fail prematurely, and I could have been hit when my car stalled 2 times in motion

Engine light will come on and when I attempt to accelerate the Jeep will not go over 25 mph. I need to pull over as soon as possible and turn the car off. I may need to do this several times before it will start to drive normally. The engine light will remain on anywhere from hours to several days while the car drives normally. There is no pattern to when it happens. I have taken the Jeep in to a dealer. Oil filter housing replaced. Did not correct the problem - drove fine for 4 days. Can happen anywhere - pulling out onto major highway or just driving on a country road. It is very dangerous and scary. It is back at the shop again. Each time I have to pay for the repair and rent a another vehicle. It has been happening for a for quite awhile, but since I need my vehicle I have lived with it. I will soon be transporting 2 young children to camp every day and it is happening more often so I had to have it fixed. Also the cost of repair is almost $3000 so far plus renting a vehicle at $50/day. I just purchased the vehicle 11/12/15. I put the date as 01/01/2016 since it has happened regularly since I got it, but it is now happening every few days.

SUV would not start, towed to a local mechanic, replaced air metering valve, still did not start. Was informed by my mechanic there is a recall on the sensor in the fuel tank but I was not told by Chrysler anything about this problem when the truck was in the shop four other times for two other recalls. Truck must be towed to Chrysler so they can look at this problem.
