On the 18th of January of 2014, I was driving back home on a rural road where the speed limit is 25mph and I was driving around 15 mph because the road doesn't have an adequate pavement, where there is alot of pot holes. My 2004 Jeep Liberty on a small hill, came to a sudden stop shutting all the system which turned the vehicle off. I attempted to turn the car back on, by turning the switch and it wouldn't turn on. I waited approximately 3 minutes when I saw a thick black smoke coming from the hood. I attempted to react quickly and saw that the doors were closed shut. I forced the door to open and ran quickly to the front of the vehicle. I lifted the hood and it was steaming hot that it burned my fingers, I then opened the hood and witnessed that the vehicle's motor was completely in smoke. I began to car 911 and stepped aside when flames started to come out from the motor. In less than 8 minutes the car was completely in fire. Both police and fire department assisted me during this tragic event. I have both reports to evidence the events that had occurred. I have attempted various times to contact Chrysler within my local area and have not received any return call from them, while they have indicated that they will send a inspector to verify the vehicle, I left all of my personal details and am still waiting for their visit. I have been waiting and I have continued to call them in effort to have an inspector to verify my loss knowing that the car is still within the vehicle guaranteed, still I have not received any response after a two months of the incident. Here, I have not only suffered from material loss but also Chrysler in my area does not demonstrate corporate responsibility nor customer satisfaction or concern for their state of being.

I had been having this problem around three weeks ago, at hot weather I turn the a\C on, and after 10 minutes the engine starts reheating, I already take it to the Chrysler Jeep dealer, and they told me that they don't know what happens that everything is ok, my husband even scan the car and he got the PO480, and they said that no everything is ok, I told them the situation that im worry about the reheating cause three days ago I has at the I95 at 65 mph, and it stars reheating very fast, I just pull over the car, but it can start a fire under the hood or something I saw a lot of smoke, I told them, and they said that they couldn't find anything that everything is ok. So if Jeep itself cant not find the problem, who can.....? they said....we don't know!!!!! this is a very weird situation, that the Jeep itself can not find a problem in a car that they make.

Three weeks after purchasing this vehicle used, the car began hiccupping or lurching while idling, and had difficulty accelerating from second to first gear. Mechanic checked error message indicating cylinder miss fire and found that all spark plugs and one coil needed to be replaced. Problem continued and check engine light went on. Same mechanic checked error message indicating cylinder miss fire, and found rubber gasket on coolant tank mangled causing coolant to splattered over engine. Replaced cap. I took a 1200 highway trip with no problem. After I returned and resumed low speed stop and go driving, the problem resumed. This time, the check engine also indicated cylinder misfire, but a hose exiting coolant tank was ruptured leaking coolant directly on to the same cylinder that had already been replaced. Thinking we had finally solved the problem, the hose was replaced, the cylinder removed and cleaned, but leakage under car and splattered over engine continued. Car is lurching especially when accelerating uphill, and check engine light is flashing on and off. There is a hissing noise after I turn off the engine. My license plate has expired and I can't re-new until my exhaust is tested, which they will not do if the check engine light is on. What am I supposed to do?

In 2012 my Jeep started bucking and jerking, idle surging, stalling and had. Hesitation while trying to accelerate, it also had sudden surges in car's speed while driving on the highway, the engine light was always on and at times it felt like the back wheels would spin before the car got traction. I was told I needed a new engine, a new engine was put in in Feb 2012 and my car has never run right since. I am now on my second new motor and still am having serious issues with the car. Everytime one thing is fixed another thing goes wrong and it is a never ending cycle. I would never buy another Jeep product again. This is only a part of all the problems I have experienced with my 2004 Jeep Liberty.

Was driving on the highway in the fast lane going about 70 mph and we lose all control of the vehicle had to swerve all the way across the highway to get on the shoulder! its a miracle we didn't wreck! vehicle wouldn't start had no idea what happened, checked the oil and was full just got it changed 3 weeks prior at the dealership. Towed it to a shop and they said the engine was done! had a warranty for 6 months and 2 weeks after this expired is when this occurred! have complained everywhere I can and I get told this has never been heard of well all you have to do is google this engine and the complaints are endless! I am so unbelievably disappointed and no one is owning up to this problem! I am done with Jeep and Chrysler and I'll make sure everyone I ever know is too!

The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Liberty. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from under the hood. The contact stopped the vehicle and upon opening the hood noticed flames. The fire department reported to the scene. The vehicle was towed to the contact's home and was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and sent an investigator to inspect the vehicle. The inspector determined there was not a manufacturing defect. There was a recall under NHTSA campaign id number: 04V337000 (engine and engine cooling) that could have been related to the failure. The manufacturer informed the contact of the outstanding recalls which did not include the engine recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 77,000.
