For the past 3 years I have not been able to fill my gas tank because the tank doesn't register full and the gas keeps on coming. Even though I know it will overflow I sometimes don't time it right and it gushes out. It makes me VERY angry and smelling like gas. I have told the dealer about it but they say nothing is wrong.... I can see something is wrong, not to mention wasteful, dangerous and expensive!

The gas tank leaks gas all over every single gas station I go to when I try to fill it up causing corrosive gasoline to flow all over the paint and exterior of the car and causing it to spill all over the ground - risking environmental contamination.

Gas spits back when filling! Dealer says must drop tank and service/replace the control valve with integral flow management, but NO guarantee that this would solve the problem. All scheduled service and recalls have been performed by the dealer. Now getting a cylinder 5 misfire and O2 sensor high code. Not sure if the problems are related. The fuel spitback is DEFINITELY a safety and personal hazard. After filling, can smell gas fumes for a prolonged period which is bad enough that my wife has to open a window to clear the smell. Suspect that there must be fuel spillage somewhere besides the filler neck. Will it take a fatality before Chrysler addresses this problem?

I've had this Jeep Liberty for 6 years and for the last year I haven't filled up the gas tank in fear of overflow. It really sucks because I'm going out of state and now I have to calculate mileage to put gas in. I took it into the dealership and they told me it would cost me upwards of $2000.
I'm living with this pain because it's a 2005 and what's the point of putting that $ into it. Good jeep but this is a pain in the butt!!!! I was probably around 77500 miles when I noticed this problem and I thought it was the gas station I went to, they kept giving me free car washes. Oops, it was my gas tank and not their pumps.

Gas tank spills over when fueling the car, gas goes on the ground. EVERY time. What a mess. Everyone I know who has this car, has this problem. Clearly a defect I should not have to deal with or pay for. Why no recall for this dangerous situation???

Every time I refuel my 2005 Jeep Liberty the gas overflows and runs down the side of the Jeep and makes a puddle of gas on the concrete. It does this every time and makes me pissed. Jeep should have a recall to correct this problem.

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty, which is on it's second engine. The shut off valve for fueling does not work any more and I have seen a lot of complaints about this. My niece also has a 2005 Liberty and her shut off valve doesn't work any more either. You can never fill your tank because it just pours out.

Just bought the vehicle for my daughter's 16th birthday. Stopped to fill the tank as a good dad would and gas splashes out all over the fender after the pump clicked off. I first thought it was a fault of the pump handle until I saw several videos on Utube for exactly the same problem. THIS IS VERY UNSAFE AND A POOR DESIGN!!!!

At first I thought it was the gas station's fault, but no one else was having the same problem. It happened a few times and then it stopped.

FUEL PUMP NOZZLE WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF AT THE PUMPS. GAS IS BACK FLOW OUT THE FILLER PIPE EVERYTIME . Waiting for explosion someday as design defect exist. New 2012 Liberty properly shuts off at nozzle when tank is full with no back flow of gas out the neck all over the car and person. This is a problem specific to design to the 2005 Liberty.
Jeep wont admit to anything wrong. Purchased new in 2005 and has done it ever since.

Every time we fill the gas tank anymore a lot of fuel spill out. Even when I try to be very careful gas still spills every were and I believe it's a fire hazard to myself and everybody at the station.

It just need to be fixed with out cost to me obviously this is some kind of defect. Gas should not be sprayed back at you when trying to fill your empty tank.

Every single time we fill up the car (no topping off), the gas shoots out of the tank back at us. I'm not talking about a few drops either. It spits out a substantial amount and has soaked our clothes on more than one occasion. We lower the flow of fuel from the pump, but it still happens. Unfortunately we bought this car used, hoping it would be reliable but the problem was not disclosed to us. This has the potential to be a very dangerous problem.
This is a known problem with Chrysler cars and when they replace the fuel system, owners have had a variety of new problems. We have read that the plastic O ring swells with gasoline that contains ethanol and fails to cut the back flow off. The problem with this is, all pumps in our area contain at least 10% ethanol. What good is a car if you can't drive it because you're scared to fill it up?!
