The pain on the outside roof is peeling, I do live in a state where the roads are salted however, there is no salt used on the top of the vehicle, this, while not a new vehicle should not be peeling the way it is. The front windshield had a severe chip & the installer was barely able to sand this area down enough to be able to seal the windshield. I have done some research & this is a very common problem along with the rear window regulators both of which have had to be replaced. There are problems with the emergency break & the Jeep dealership gives one reason for the ABS, esp among other wheel and breaking issues. And now the one thing that Jeep is finally supposed to be doing something about rather than me having to put more money into this vehicle for, the gas tank recall seems to be a ridiculous fix, and I have been on a waiting list for this for months and still have not been able to get it in to get this fixed. I saw a news story that said that Chrysler was being mandated to fix these very poorly made vehicles. I would like to know how this particular vehicle does not fall into the other recalls when it has been having the same issues. I have been having breaking system issues as long back as 13 months after I purchased this vehicle.

Transmission broke! every owner of a 2005 or 2006 Jeep Liberty diesel that I have spoken with, has had to rebuild or replace their transmission.the manufacture had a recall to tune down engine to help prevent problem, I had this done, but this is only a temp fix, (a band-aid). The real problem is a weak link in the tranny, (the torque converter). When the torque converter fails it destroys the transmission.. which is what just happened to me. My Jeep is 8 years old, but I only had 68,000 miles on it. The reason I purchased this vehicle was for the long service life of the 2.8L diesel (300,000 plus miles before rebuild). I live in a somewhat rural area and I have spoke with over 12 people who has experienced this same problem with there 2.8L diesel transmission #545rfe. I know this is a nationwide problem, I have gone online and spoken with alot of Liberty owners and all have had transmission problems, I have also spoke with many former Liberty owners who said they would never drive another Jeep, because lack of dealer concerns over transmission problems..they had! I am correcting the problem by replacing the damaged stock transmission, with a highly recommended aftermarket one made for the torque of a diesel engine.. I feel consumers should not half to endure that large out of pocket expense, to repair a manufacturer problem! thank-you

  • Automatic transmission
  • 95,000 miles
Key will not release from ignition on steering column due to restricted (degraded range of motion from a subassembly with weakened spring) movement of automatic transmission shifter interlock cable. Vehicle can not be put in park (shifter freely moves through P R N D 3 2) and key will not make the last little turn before release. Seems to be an extremely common occurrence among owners, based on cursory online research. Requires replacement of entire center console shifter assembly with an "upgraded/improved" mopar part to fix the known high failure subassembly (but not available for purchase separately). Inability to place vehicle securely in park would seem to be biggest safety issue, not to mention vehicle security compromised with key perpetually in ignition...updated 02-10-15 updated 8/28/2017

The vehicle shift assembly for these model of Jeep fails to operate correctly. The cable will not set in the proper position when shifted back into park, disabling the owner's ability to remove their key from the ignition. The only solution is to remove the cover covering the shift assembly and forcefully push the cable into place to release the key. In addition to this, the shift handle can be bumped and shifted into gears, or into reverse or park, without the brake being pushed as would normally operate the assembly. This causes the risk of accidentally bumping the vehicle into a gear that could cause an accident and risk the driver's life.

Ac compressor had to be replaced I did not know there was a recall on it.. also the computer went on it and that was repaired on 10/11/13... I was told the spark plugs were wrong. I have never had a tune up or my spark plugs changed! unless the wrong ones were in there when I bought this brand new in September of 2006. Or possibly the Chrysler dealership did it to get a repair. Safford in springfield va. I will not stop perusing this until I have answers. Car will not blow out cold air but works for a moment then just hot air. Thought it needed freon but I am being told new compressor is required $700. I spoke to another mechanic who thought the clutch part is the real issue. The car is garage kept and well maintained. Replacing clutch first. I have seen several similar complaints online too. Windows 3 of 4 have dropped.

On three separate occasions vehicle stalls upon engaging drive or reverse from park or neutral. The shift is made, the vehicle begins to move, then suddenly it stalls, the engine shuts off. Park or neutral must be quickly reselected to restart vehicle. Danger of being in an intersection when this happens it high. Dealer says it is a known issue, with no solution.

Vehicle stalled, engine shut off when backing out of driveway. The stall point of the transmission is exceed, making transition from reverse to drive or drive to reverse too much, causing a stall. Also, idle in drive when stopped there are surges that cause a near stall. This is a safety issue, as it can happen when making 2-point or 3-point turns on a road with traffic.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4X4. The contact stated that vehicle would surge forward when shifting into any gear and the vehicle would also loose power abnormally. The egr (exhaust gas recirculation) valve melted, causing a burning smell to release into the vehicle. In addition, the gear shifter would shift out of park independently, causing the vehicle to roll away. The contact also stated that the rear passenger side door handle became defective, making it impossible to open the vehicle door from the interior of the vehicle and the ABS, esp and traction control lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failures. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 101,000.....updated 06/18/12 the consumer also stated there was a problem with the control arm on the vehicle and because of the widespread problem a recall as issued. The consumer was then informed the recall was old, and her VIN was not included. Key was stuck in ignition of 2006 Jeep Liberty limited edition. Also noticed the shifter was moving freely, without having to be pushed in like it typically would. Took to Jeep dealership & was told that entire shifter column needed to be replaced because it is plastic & brakes easily - cost $200. Have heard that this is a common occurrence.
