It always happens while on the freeway. After a chokehold hours of driving, gas tank is fine, my cause shuts off, unable to accel and no function to increase speed. I have to then pull to the side and wait for it to "cool down." This has happened 3 times. Last time it happened I had only been driving for 1 hr and the transmission temp. Warning light came on.

We bought this car for my son in Dec 2016. In the summer of 2017, he was driving down the freeway at about 70 mph. After driving for about an hour, maybe two hours on the freeway, his car literally shut down. It went from 70 mph to 20 mph immediately. This happened 4 times last summer. We took the car to lithia Dodge of santa rosa, ca twice. They couldn't duplicate the problem. I had him come home (chester, ca) and took it to where we bought it at susanville auto center in susanville, ca. They couldn't duplicate the problem either. They did say that they had two other Jeep with the same transmission that the customers said they had the same issues. Again, they couldn't duplicate the problem. Just now, my son called (he is on his way up for easter) and he is stuck in woodland, ca alongside the freeway. It happened again. Susanville motors had us change the transmission fluid which we did (over $400) to hopefully fix the problem. It obviously didn't. it is only 75 degrees right now. The car doesn't show any sign of overheating, all fluids are good, but then all of a sudden, after driving freeway speeds, the overheating light will come on and the car will shut down. The temperature gage says everything is great. I have gone on the internet and found some chat areas where other people are having the same problem. When is Jeep going to put in a recall on this issue" they have to know about it. Is it going to take my son getting into an accident and getting hurt, or even worse, killing himself" I am petrified about this. I turned in a case last summer (case # 32398610) and spoke with a wonderful lady by the name of kaylee. Please help. Jeep won't do anything.

The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that the temperature warning indicator kept randomly illuminating and the engine overheated. The failure caused the contact to have to wait a brief moment and place the vehicle in neutral in order for it to cool down to be able to drive the vehicle. The dealer (bill Dodge, 118 pleasant St, brunswick, me 04011, (207) 721-8300) from where the vehicle was purchased provided no owner's manual and replaced the cvt transmission; however, the warning indicator kept flashing. The dealer stated that the part needed to be replaced again. In addition, the dealer refused to provide an owner's manual; therefore, the contact had to research a solution and obtain information on his own. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, opened a case, and then closed the case with no solution other than replacing the same part. The vehicle was unsafe to drive because the temperature warning indicator could illuminate at any time. In addition, the vehicle failed to shift properly and was slow to pick up speed. The approximate failure mileage was 97,000.

I have had my 2012 Jeep Patriot for over a year and just recently, in the last 5 months, the engine will randomly stall while I am driving or idling at a light/stop sign. There is no warning or indication as to why this happens. It has happened at various speeds ranging from 25 mph to 60 mph. It has happened on residential roads and on the freeway. Luckily, each time it has happened I have been able to get over to the shoulder pretty quickly. When it first started happening, I would turn it off and be able to start it right away. It has been happening more frequently lately. Sometimes it happens anywhere between 2 to 6 times a day. It's very random. Sometimes days go by before it happens and then sometimes it happens every single day. It never happens when I am turning. Only when I am driving. Never in reverse. When it stalls, the engine completely shuts off and my steering wheel locks up. The lights, radio, etc stay on. Once it stalls and I turn the Jeep completely off, it is taking longer and longer for it to start back up again. Once it stalls, the check engine light comes on and stays on. Sometimes the light is off in the morning after I park my Jeep overnight and sometimes the light is still on in the morning when I get up to drive my Jeep.

After pumping gas, less than a mile into my trip home, my Jeep's started stalling, the power steering went off (I couldn't easily turn the steering wheel) and it died in the middle of the road. I turned the key in the ignition to the off position, then back on and I was able to started it. I only moved about 500 feet and then it happened again. I turned it off, back on again and the same thing happened a third time, as I was getting home. I sat on my parking spot and the Jeep was stalling but it didn't die again. I looked up Jeep forums and it seem to be a common problem and people resolve it by not filling the tank all the way. Needless to say it was a very scary experience and it could've easily caused an accident.

I was pulling out of a parking lot onto a busy street. I put my foot on the accelerator to gain speed and there was no response. I could not accelerate. The check engine light came on. I was able to turn the car off and back on and was then able to accelerate. I had the car towed to the dealership. The dealership had the car for a week and said the car was fixed without giving much of an explanation. I had the car back for 2 day and it happened to me again twice. I took the car back to the dealership and they have had it for an additional week with no diagnosis. They say they have not been able to get the car to replicate the issue. I am concerned to drive the car as this has happened to me on three occasions on busy streets and it is very dangers.

While driving, the engine stalls out. This happened once 2 weeks ago and the engine light came on. However, the light was off the following morning. Today, it happened twice, and the engine light is back on. I was driving less than 55mph both times on city streets and not turning. When the engine stalls, all power is lost to the steering and breaking system.

The car stalls frequently in the middle of the street. Dealer replaced crankshaft position sensor in June 2016 and insisted the problem is unrelated to the recall that already exists which causes stalling. Less than 1 year and approximately 12,000 miles later the car is stalling frequently again - every time the car is put in reverse and approximately 3-4 times more every 20 minutes.

On 3/21/2017 and on 3/22/2017 the vehicle stalled while in motion at different speeds 4 times. The battery was replaced due to this and the alternator was tested as to having no issue. It happens at various speeds from 25-70 mph and causes me to have to pull over to the side of the road when it stalls out which is very dangerous for anyone operating the vehicle and other vehicle operators that may be around me when this happens. Usually the car will start back up and run for another period of time before it happens again. Chrysler has had multiple complaints filed about this on multiple websites and with this Agency however the recalls implemented for this problem have only pertained to certain models none of which were related to my model of the Jeep Patriot. Again this has happened on city streets and highways and have yet to have a dealer or mechanic be able to diagnose the problem. Thanks

I have had numerous problems with my 2012 Jeep Patriot. From the beginning my transmission would constantly over heat and I brought it into the dealer at about 30,000 miles and they said, "there is nothing wrong." The problem persisted and finally they issued me a new transmission at about 50,000 miles. A few months later, the engine just stopped continuously on the highway & street. Then they discovered that it was the crankshaft sensor that was bad, which they replaced. I had to pay $100 because of a deductible. The car seemed to be working okay until June 22nd, 2015 when I was on a road trip and all of a sudden the car completely died with a huge semi truck behind me. I was traveling at about 75 mph and the car just completely shut down, power steering, everything went off except for the lights and other items run by the battery. We immediately tried our best to signal and finally made it safely off the highway at speeds of under 15 mph. The car gave us no check lights and no indication as to what was wrong with the vehicle except for that it would not turn over when we tried to start it. We had to have the vehicle towed while on a road trip. We live in California and had to have the vehicle towed in Idaho falls, Idaho which was extremely inconvenient. We rented a car and left the 2012 Jeep Patriot at the dealer hoping they could fix it upon our return to that area. They were unable to give us any answers and said the car started fine. Obviously, you can see how this is an issue. I have no problem fixing the car but with no answers to what is wrong and having the constant worry of wondering if my life and my family's life is in danger, is not something I am willing to tolerate. It seems that many people are having the same issue as well. I will be forwarding this for them to make a complaint as well. I will also follow up hoping that this issue can be resolved.

On October 28, 2015 with about 50,000 miles on it, my Jeep went into limp mode while I was driving 55 mph. Luckily I was able to pull over to the shoulder before getting rear-ended. Multiple lights turned on including the electronic throttle control, check engine, and traction control. I unhooked the battery and waited a few minutes. Hooked it back up and it seemed to be fine. Until March 13, 2016 when I was driving my daughter to the mall for her birthday. I was driving on a busy 4 lane road when my car seemed to turn off or loose all power while climbing a hill. Again, I just avoided being rear ended and pulled over to the side. I turned the key off, took it out, waited a few minutes and started it again and it worked. We went shopping and went back home without a problem, until the next day. March 14, 2016 while driving my daughters to school my Jeep went into limp mode. Luckily I was in the village and only going 30 mph, but all of the lights came on again-electronic throttle control, traction control, and check engine. I drove it back home and had it towed to the dealership. The dealership said that they did not know what was wrong with it. That after resetting the battery and performing a diagnostic check, only a vac leak was detected. They performed a check and confirmed (according to my invoice) that there were "no vacuum leaks at this time per code" and that "could be many things." And they "cleared codes and road tested ok at this time." So I drove it home from the dealership and to work today with no problems. When I went to go home, all the lights came on again. I do not feel safe and I feel stuck. No one seems to want to fix it because they do not know what to fix... and this is pathetic when even the dealership that I bought it from can not help. I am afraid someone will be killed if a solution is not found to this common problem with Jeep Patriots.
