Bought the 2008 Jeep new in December 2008. 2 years ago had the death wobble 1 time, had to hit brakes hard to completely stop. Did nothing to fix it, thought it was a fluke. A year ago started happening more frequently, bought new steering stabilizer, thought it was fixed. 6 months ago started again, went to 2 dealers who said the same thing, needs new stabilizer, bought Rancho 5000 stabilizer. Took the wife for a ride on back roads, she said she will not ride in it again, death wobble twice in 2 miles. Went to dealer who said need better stabilizer and new bracket to remount it. I like the Jeep so I'll fork out another $200.00 to see if I keep it. I drop it at Angola dealer Sunday to get fixed Monday?????

Death Wobble!! We were driving on a regular highway (Indiana I-69) North from Indianapolis. The first time the wobble happened this day, we were driving about 70 mph in steady traffic with many semi trucks. There were some rough spots near the center of the slow lane. The driver-side wheel started to wobble so much that I thought that one of the wheels were coming off at 70 mph. I started putting on the brakes and looking for a place to get over on the shoulder. Thankfully we had a wide shoulder and weren't on a bridge or construction zone. The steering was shaking so bad that I went from 70 mph down to 30 as fast as I could; lucky a big truck wasn't behind us!

I looked over the wheels, thinking there must be a flat or that the lugs must be loose. I used the lug wrench to make sure they were tight, and they were. Nothing appeared to be wrong with the wheels. I decided to try to finish the trip home driving 60 mph. The same thing happened again 2 more times that day; all 3 times hitting a small, shallow pot-hole. After the second time, I drove down the highway at 50 mph, trying to swerve to miss every little rough spot in the road! Might I mention that this Jeep has been babied, always used on paved roads; it has very low mileage for a 2008 and purchased it new. This really could have caused a bad accident at 55-70 mph in heavy traffic.

A Jeep should not have a problem like this! Maybe I should get a Subaru!

Now that I researched this, I realize others have had this happen. Why wouldn't Jeep notify owners that this could happen? I'll take it to the dealer after Labor Day weekend, but I won't trust driving it over 40 mph.

I thought the problem was tires out of balance, then, I bought new tires, then I had them rotated . Finally, I went into my regular mechanic who told me I had " DEATH WOBBLE". Why hasn't Jeep done something about this?

Update from Aug 9, 2014: I had the problem fixed with an updated steering dampner which Jeep created to fix the problem, but never did a recall. Anyway, It's a $&%.00 part and costs about an hour to put on. Fixed the problem immediATELY.

New problem: on interstate going 60mph and suddenly severe shaking, wobbly of front end, difficult to steer and lots of traffic around me. Had to use 2 hands firmly, immediately slowed down, cars behind and to side were gracious to allow me to get off road near exit ramp . When stopped to see if any visible damage--none noted. Started again and as if nothing wrong, but wobbly car warning came on. Turned around and drove back home on non-freeway roads for fear of it happening again and being involved in car accident.

Have appointment Monday morning to get it checked out. Concerned with what my husband said could be "death wobble" and the cost to fix it. This could be deadly as the name declares.

Death Wobble first happened July 2013, replaced the steering dampener. Death Wobble happened again June 2014, 11 months later.

Vehicle has no modifications, same tire size, well maintained etc...

I cannot believe Jeep/Chrysler/Fiat will not accept responsibility, or our government "watchdogs" have not issued a recall for this obvious major safety defect.?

Jeeps are Death traps, I was considering trading it in for a Ram 1500, but they also have this issue.!

It is now painfully obvious why so many people prefer "foreign vehicles" over North American made.

Next vehicle I purchase will be a Hyundai or similar vehicle from a reputable company.

I will be informing everyone I speak to about the missing safety standards of this manufacturer. I will simply tell them to Google "Death Wobble"

I purchased the Jeep Wrangler 2008 and I'm experiencing the death wobble. I had my Jeep repaired 4 times so far, replaced steering dampener, power steering kit, replaced all 4 new tires, got an alignment, bracket damper, tie rod bolts, washer bar, front rod drag link, inner outer, and it still not fixed. i bought my 2008 jk roughly two years ago, with the exception of a few minor exterior touches everything remained stock, until i got the death wobble. After experiencing it first hand and researching it myself i decided to buy a 4 inch full suspension lift, thinking that it would replace my shocks, track bar and coils along with the countless other things. after install which ended up costing me $1800 i picked it up from the mechanic and experienced it again before i even got home. ended up taking it back and they had assured me they fixed it with no cost this time. i picked it up and experienced it again. after cutting all ties with the first mechanic i took it to a reputable 4x4 shop in town they informed me i would need new, ball joints, hubs, bearings tie rod and steering stabilizer. all said and done cost me another $2600. Today after all the work was completed and the mechanic was taking it for its maiden voyage to ensure everything was kosher i received a call telling me that yet again it was not fixed.... back to square one.

I find it very hard to believe that jeep is unaware of this issue, I'm not suggesting a full blown recall (i love my jeep) but perhaps a solution to this problem so the many jeep owners are not scrapping their pockets trying to diagnose an issue that jeep has known about for years.

I owned a 2008 Jeep Wrangler that stared with the death wobble around 50000 miles. new tires fixed it but again around 80,000 miles shaking began again. got new tires but didn't go away. dealer put in new steering dampener but still wobbled at 60MPH or greater. not covered under warranty and I traded it in at 90000miles Just wanted to document this as 2008 was a bad jeep year obviously. it also burned oil and no light came on.... was almost out of oil and didn't know until oil changed at the scheduled every 3000 miles. then had to add oil every 700 to 1000 miles. Chrysler reports this is normal.

Vehicle was having a slight wobble in the steering wheel and took it to a tire dealer and had tires rotated. Tires are stock size Goodrich rugged terrain with 18,000 miles. Drove out of tire dealer and the same day noticed a frightening wobble like the front end was coming off and then it stopped after a few seconds. The next day I went back to the dealer and he said it was probably a balancing issue and he balanced the tires for $25.

I went next door to a mechanic I know and told him to install a new steering stabilizer also, which was $125. I figured the problem was solved and since my wife is the driver of that car I gave it back to her and figured it was safe. She drove it to work the next day and I asked if it felt better, she replied it happened again.

I found this complaint website and found 13 other complaints that describe exactly what happened to my wife and I. It should be noted that it has happened to 13 people but has no permanent recommended solution. I bought the car new in March 08 and have had very few problems until now.

I can't be sure his was the same problem, happened twice, both when on dry clean pavement, on a curve steering went crazy, felt like four blowouts at same time and had to coast to a stop. Turned off Jeep and restarted and all was back to normal, The issue in my case seems to be something with the traction control system. By deactivating the system has prevented this from reoccurring for over a year now. Initially i just flipped the interior switch to turn off but have since have had it turned off in the computer. Each time this happened the engine light along with the traction control warning light started flashing.. Hope this helps a few of you

Okay, well since the initial death wobble the following has been done: Steering Dampner replaced, Tie Rods replaced, Track bar replaced, Ball Joints Replaced, Tires Balanced, and still..... the death wobble Continues. I take my car back to Jeep Dealership and ask that my U-Joints be checked for interior rusting and be replaced. They refuse to do so saying that after "inspecting the U-joints they were found to be rusted, but not faulty, as there was no give or no play." They then state the next step needs to be new tires. (To which I refused, as I'm sure everyone just has a good 850.00 plus just "laying around." Jeep did say that the steering dampner they replaced (now about a month ago) was leaking, and needed to be replaced again. So I guess I'll see how long this one lasts... I'm so over this!

Took my Jeep to the dealership with the Death Wobble initially which they replaced my steering dampner and said it would fix my "shimmy" (Lets be honest, this is not a SHIMMY- its called DEATH WOBBLE for a reason). Ironically since then, my wrangler now begins to death wobble more frequently on any highway trip, happening up to 4 times in one 15 mile trip to work. Took it back to the dealership again, where the technician drove the car with me in the passenger seat, (was diagnosing the problems from the beginning as my tires, before even experiencing the event), he went over one of the most common areas I have my wobble, and it of course went into its extreme seizure like activity, to which the technician said, and I quote: "Holy Crap! This is DEFINITELY not your tires!" Clearly this was his first death wobble experience. This round at the dealership I was given pretty much a new front suspension (Trac bar, tie rods, etc) and sent on my way, only to be back again the next day...

Death wobble has occurred many times over previous months. I have performed no modifications to the vehicle and it has never been driven off road. Tires are good with correct pressure and alignment has been checked multiple times. Every shop tells me a different solutions including dealerships and forums. I am looking for a better answer than just replace all suspension components and maybe it will fix it. Jeep needs to step up or risk losing a generation of loyal customers. If Jeep won't do it then legal recourse may be necessary. We need help.
