2018 Jeep Wrangler has terrifying steering issues. Consistently while steering a highway curve at 40-55 mph my Jeep steering disengages and results in an unsafe inability to maintain the steering column. The steering can be described as loose and commonly described by passengers as the unsettling feeling that the frame of the vehicle is coming off the wheels. Please look into this safety issue. I have not been injured yet but if this continues I don't think it will remain that way.

Vehicles has excessive play in the steering wheel which makes staying/driving in the lane difficult on highways and incredibly difficult on side roads. Dealer has replaced the steering gearbox and now says it drives as it sohuld. Taken vehicle to other shops and was told that while moving the steering wheel back and forth the drag link moves immediatly but the tie rod does not which contributes to the excessive play felt in the steering wheel. Also the gearbox moves away from the vehicle frame which exasperates the problem even more.

When temps near freezing and the vehicle is cold when driving around 55 and rounding a curve the steering will lock up just after 10 degree of wheel movement. The power steering locks up like you hit a maximum limit and then releases.. happens about 2 to 3 times then goes away for the rest of your drive. Does not happen when warm. It has happened ever since the day I bought it.

The Jeep starts to shake while driving and it is hard to hold onto steering wheel. Feels like you have no control. The mileage odometer goes from 999,999 back to correct one. It is a brand new 2018. Can't get the steering part because it is on back order. We didn't even get a notice about recall. I am so blessed my daughter has not been in an accident going to and from college

The steering wheel locks up while driving. This especially happens in cold weather. The steering wheel is either difficult to turn / slow to respond to turning, or, on one occasion (Feb 7, 2021), it locked up completely while driving on the highway. I was trying to follow a curve in the road and the vehicle did not respond. I had to stop the car to get the wheel to unlock. This issue has been going on for the last month, and culminated in the very alarming episode on Feb 7. after googling this issue, I'm aware that it is a very common problem in Jeep Wrangler (like mine) purchased in late 2017 through early 2018. I purchased my Jeep in Feb, 2018. I've notified Chrysler and my dealership. My dealership informs me that it is likely the gearbox, but they are on a 3 week back order. I'm afraid to drive my vehicle, but am taking it to my dealership tomorrow (Feb 9) to be diagnosed, and hope to arrive there safely.

Wrangler

  • 10,000 miles
For some reason when driving over 60mph and under 40 degrees outside, the steering wheel sticks or becomes very stiff when attempting to turning right during a curve in the road or when changing lanes. The danger is that it will then suddenly un-stick and cause the vehicle to swerve to the right. The first time it happened was in 2018. There was a dealer software programing update that was performed however each winter when the temperature drops below 40 the issue still occurs.

The power steering will lock up at highway speeds usually over 30 mph and will come back on when the speed goes below 30mph. This is a major safety issue as it is very difficult to turn when the power steering goes out. Also, when it randomly comes back on the vehicle will overcorrect due to the power steering coming back on. I have taken it in to two dealerships and they have yet to fix this issue.

problem #865

Jan 162021

Wrangler

  • 36,000 miles
Death wobble occurs at speeds around 60 mph, triggered by small bumps on the road. Extreme shaking occurs on the steering of the vehicle. The wobbling, when it is triggered, continues even if the road is smooth after the bumps. The wobbling is not a vertical vibration from the road, it is a left-right vibration on the steering, which then causes violent shaking of the whole vehicle. This happens in highways at regular cruising speeds 60 mph on straight road segments, typically after going through a small patch of irregular (little bumpy) road, like a bridge or an overpass on the highway. I have had about 5 visits to the dealer in Jeep-Chrysler of morgantown, wv and they claim that since they cannot replicate the condition, there is nothing they can do. But this is a recurring problem since the car was new.
