While driving North on I15 at the el cajon pass in calif., my 2007 Nissan Altima stalled. I pulled to the side of the road and tried to restart it. It would not start so I was going to get out of the car when black smoke came out of the air conditioning vents. The passenger and I got out of the car and, at that moment, flames came out from under the hood. We got away from the car and called 911. With in a minute the car was fully engulfed in flames. As we continued to walk away from the car, the hillside next to the car caught on fire. We moved to the median, but the fire jumped to the median which surrounded us in fire and smoke. A truck stopped and drove us out of the situation. After getting home, I found on the internet that there was a recall (June 2007) of my model of car because it might catch on fire. I was not told of this upon purchasing the car, when I had it in for service 3 months later, or by mail the entire time I owned the car.

I was driving a Nissan Altima hybrid with approx. 4000 miles at 65 mph. All of a sudden the engine/gas peddle was not responding and smoke started to fill the front of the car. I pulled over on the highway and the front end of the car was on fire. The vehicle was a total loss.

Altima 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 7,000 miles
I leased a Nissan Altima 2007 five months ago. The vehicle had about 7000 miles on it when last night I was driving on the NJ parkway and my accelerator wouldn't work, so I coasted to the shoulder dodging cars along the way. At this point the check engine light came on. When I reached the shoulder I could see flames under my hood. Within ten minutes the entire car was engulfed in flames and had several small explosions. Please help me to find out what I can do. Since this I have found that there have been 30 similar complaints about the car and when I contacted the car dealer they tried to act like they have never heard of this complaint.

As I was driving on a highway, engine started to stall. I took the exit off the highway and pulled on the side. Right then I noticed smoke coming out of the engine. I pulled my one and a half year old baby and my wife out of the car and the whole engine caught fire. The consumer stated per recall issued by Nissan the air filter is made out of combustible material. Attached is a report from the massachussetts fire department. Updated 10/03/07

- the contact stated that when driving the 2007 Nissan Altima at approximately 45 mph he felt a pulling motion under the vehicle. The vehicle jerked 3 or 4 times, and then the engine light illuminated. He pulled the vehicle to the side of the road, and the vehicle lost power. He attempted to restart the vehicle, but the vehicle would not start. He noticed gray smoke coming from under the hood. The horn on the vehicle started to beep uncontrollably, and then the engine started to burn. The vehicle was towed to the insurance company's investigation site. Neither the dealership or the manufacturer have inspected the vehicle to determine the reason for the fire. The vehicle had 20, 00 miles. Updated 03/30/07. ***engine fire*** PE07-026.pco
