Altima

  • CVT transmission
  • 53,000 miles

I purchased my 2013 Nissan Altima (44K) in May of 2015. I had no issues with this vehicle until I reached the 50K mile mark in January 2016. The first issue started when the vehicle would push really hard driving up a hill. The RPM would jump up and down. The next issue happened on May 2, 2016 when it shut off when placed into any gear other than "Park". It shakes really violently then shuts down. Now, the car has graduated to jerking every single time I apply the gas after stopping at a light or stop sign. This car has shut down in traffic three times between May 2-June 27.

It's been taken to Nissan three times and they can't provide a reason why. They say that since there are no error codes then they can't diagnose the problem. What happened to actually getting under the hood and seeing what's going on?? I've taken it to a Chevy dealer and they gave me more of an explanation by saying maybe the dirty throttle body had something to do with this. Chevy cleaned it and 1 week later, it's back to jerking and shutting down. To be clear, it's not the battery, the fueling parts, or any fluids. This has been confirmed. It has to be the transmission because everything works in the car except it's ability to actually drive! Now this part of the rant is about the service I was given.

Each time I've taken it to Nissan, they've kept the vehicle for about 2 days for inspection. I requested to be provided with updates even if the vehicle was not being worked on but wasn't given any. I had to call every hour just to get in contact with the service rep. I'm always told that they can't find a thing wrong with the vehicle; no error codes or driving issues while the vehicle was with them. Each time I've taken the car to them, I've been made to feel as if I'm lying about the vehicle completely shutting off in the middle of ongoing traffic. Also, I always ask that I'm given a detailed report as to what they inspected on the vehicle and how. It is always the same which tells me that they aren't doing anything different when they inspect the car.

Recently, I was almost rear-ended because it shut off while the vehicle was pulling off from a stop light. I sat in the middle of a busy street for 20 mins before the vehicle decided to drive again. I've researched this problem and it seems as if I'm not the only Nissan owner with this problem. The CVT transmission seems to "go out" at the 50K mile mark. I find it hard to believe that this vehicle can shut off while in use and there is no code or trail as to why. The most dangerous part of this experience is that the car shuts off while it is being actively driven. I use the freeway twice a week and I'd be doomed if the vehicle shut off in that type of traffic (65-75 mph). I've never had a vehicle that completely shuts down and a certified mechanic could not tell me why.

As I previously mentioned, I'm sure it has something to do with the transmission because the vehicle's driving capabilities are severely affected. There's no telling what other parts are being affected by this issue. I am still under warranty and paying for this vehicle so there should be no reason as to why I have to still complain about this issue. If a vehicle shuts down then there is a reason and as a consumer, I expect the supplier to provide a reason and remedy to their product.

I bought this certified pre-owned from a Nissan dealer in RI. I knew there was an issue because it would die out in drive and it always shuttered a bit. Anyway, I kept taking it in to be checked out and they kept giving me a different reason why it was doing that, avoiding the transmission word at all costs.

Anyway, I got the battery replaced, I had a "bulletin" on it taken care of, had all the recalls done on it, put premium gas in, put full synthetic oil instead of the blend it requires... on and on of above and beyond things that had nothing to do with the problem.

So ultimately I went to New York for the weekend and it completely died there, light came on, all the good stuff. Wouldn't leave 1st gear. So I went to the Nissan dealership at 25mph in Yorktown Heights and the certified extended warranty covered it with a $50 deductible. All is well that ends well I guess but it still was a little to risky and to early for the life of the car for that too happen.

I have a video of it actually happening (good timing) but it wouldn't let me post the link in the video form, but it's on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2TNtL2Q4fA

Altima S 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 35,729 miles

I first purchased my pre-owned 2013 Altima S in March of 2015 with 32,000 miles. Starting in April of 2015 the vehicle started shuddering and grinding between 1,000 and 2,000 rpms. Rubber-banding would frequently occur when accelerating. I had purchased an extended warranty with the vehicle. The vehicle was still within the three-year 36,000 mile warranty period, so I took it in to my local Nissan Dealer.

I described the problem I was having and showed them paperwork on a service bulletin for my make and model with the suggested fix as a reprogramming of the transmission. Despite it being for my make and model and year of vehicle, they said it didn't qualify, but after asking if it would be covered under my warranty, they said it would be.

They replaced the transmission entirely, the line on the work order reads as follows: "TEST DROVE VEHICLE FOUND VEHICLE TO JUDDER RECORDED DATA AND SENT TO TECHLINE, ADVISED TO REPLACE TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLEY REPLACED CVT TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY AND CLEARED TEST DROVE VEHICLE OKAY AT THIS TIME."

Nissan replaced my transmission with a re-manufactured Jatco transmission with a 1-year or 12,000 mile warranty.

at 37,705 miles, 4 months later, the exact same problem came back. Loud grinding when accelerating, shudder and judder when driving. I take the vehicle back to the Nissan dealership who test drives the vehicle and determines that the problem "can not be duplicated". I was dumbfounded - the grinding was so audible and so reproducible, I even asked others in the service department if they would be so kind as to give it a test drive and tell me if the horrific grinding on acceleration is just a normal feature of the vehicle. They claimed they drove it over 20 miles and still could not reproduce any grinding.

As soon as I go to pick the car up, I asked if the service manager had a minute to get in the car with me for a test drive so he can hear what I'm talking about. Despite everyone swearing they couldn't reproduce it, the car immediately reproduced the shudder and grinding every single time the car accelerated, with the service manager right in the passenger seat. He conceded that something didn't sound right with the vehicle and that I could leave it for additional diagnostics.

They seemed satisfied that because the transmission didn't report any error codes that there were no problems, and therefore I should just ignore it and go about continuing to drive the vehicle.

I got the impression that everyone working there was aware of the problems present with these CVTs and are trained to avoid the issue and try to convince you that the vehicle is meant to operate that way. The progression seemed to go from the staff telling me that "there is no noise" to "there is no noise or judder, but the reason why there IS a noise and juddering is because of the way the transmission is designed for fuel economy!"

I called Nissan consumer affairs. After a few weeks a regional technician was dispatched to meet with me at the dealership and see what could be done. I noticed that when both the regional tech and the service manager were in my vehicle with me, the service manager had a peculiar way of answering the regional tech when the tech asked him directly if they had experienced any problems with these CVTs. The service manager put his hand to his chin and said "ummmm..." as his eyes shifted upward and to the side.

During the service visit, they changed out the alternator and remounted the exhaust system to see if that was the cause of the noise. Unfortunately these measures still didn't remedy the problem.

After contacting Nissan Consumer Affairs and informing them of the problem, they submitted the car for potential buy-back consideration, but eventually declined buy-back. (Who can blame them for not wanting such a badly defective vehicle back?)

My next step was to contact the Better Business Bureau auto line and sent in my work orders from my 10 visits along with my vehicle information.

Despite doing everything in as timely manner as possible, and having Nissan drag their feet as thoroughly as possible every step of the way, the BBB has contacted me back and stated that the vehicle exceeds the mileage requirement for filing with the BBB auto line. The vehicle only had 45,500 miles at the time of submission.

Nissan is a fraudulent company, they lie every step of the way to their paying customers. I'm really glad websites like this exist so that others can learn about the kind of company Nissan is. I will never buy a Nissan vehicle again. For $20,000 dollars I have gotten a lemon of a vehicle, with less than 15,000 miles of light personal use, and had to waste countless hours back and forth going to the dealership only to be made a fool of.

It has been a little over a year since the purchase of this vehicle. I can say with confidence that I have never had a worse vehicle buying experience. I will never purchase a Nissan again, and if I have anything to say about it, neither will anyone who buys my products, or is in my circle of friends and family. The only responsible thing left for me to do is spread the word so no other human being is taken advantage of the same way again by Nissan.

Update from Jan 8, 2019: Second transmission failed at 69,000 miles. Enterprise extended warranty covered the 4,100 dollar charge to have another transmission put in. Almost died twice, pulled out at an intersection on a green light to make a left turn and the car wouldn't accelerate. Fortunately other drivers had enough distance to stop and not make impact with my vehicle.

This car is a real pain in the ass. The transmission was under warranty at the time of failure and was replaced free of charge by Nissan. Unknown to me I did not know this particular vehicle model has transmission issues. Less than a year later, the transmission that was installed BRAND NEW is acting up AGAIN!

I hate this vehicle. Nissan won't admit to jack sh*t. Their customer service is absolute CRAP. I have been driving aa 2007 Toyota Corolla and it has not given me a single TRANSMISSION issue. It's at 250,000km.

So after refueling the car would shut down at a red light or stop sign. It would start up again just fine but then once you put it in drive it would shut down again and eventually if you time hitting the gas right when you put it in drive it'll go again but don't stop or it will shut off again.

I thought it was a bad battery at first so paid to replace that, then I assumed it was bad gas because I bought it from a place I don't normally get gas from plus I got a fuel cleaner and it worked perfectly.

2 weeks later it happened again right after refueling but this time from a place I typically go too, so took it back to the dealership for the 2nd time (the first time I took it to a local guy to replace the battery and then the dealership after that didn't work).

The first time the dealership wouldn't check the transmission fluid because they said it can't be that, so this time I demanded it and they said well we ran a bunch of tests and it looks like there is a service bulletin on it for "Reprogram Engine Control Module." Whatever the hell that means so that's what they're doing now to it and I'll see if that fixes it.

I bought it certified pre-owned so it has 100k mile warranty on it, so let's see if they try and charge me for it...

I PURCHASED A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA WITH 55600 MILES FROM NATIONAL MOTORS IN BALTIMORE, MD IN SEPT 2015( AND NO I DIDNT NOT GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY). AROUND JANUARY 2015, THE CAR NOW HAS AROUND 60K MILES, I NOTICED SOME PROBLEM WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE, IT WOULDNT MOVE AT FIRST, THEN IT KICKED INTO GEAR THEN ON. ANOTHER DAY IN JANUARY, IT DID THE SAME THING WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE BUT THIS TIME IT CUT OFF. IT RESTARTED BUT ALL THE WAY HOME IT SHUTTERED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO CUT OFF. LATER THAT DAY I HAD TO DROP MY DAUGHTER FROM AT HER COLLEGE DORM. IT CUT OFF. I GOT OUT THE CAR TO HELP HER, GOT BACK IN STARTED THE CAR, PUT IT IN DRIVE AND IT CUT OFF. DID THIS FOR A HOUR UNTIL I FINALLY DECIDED TO CALL A TOW. I HAD TO HAVE THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACE WHICH COST ME $550. I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE END OF MY PROBLEMS. ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER MY BDAY WEEKEND FEB 27, 2016 THE CAR STATED DOING THE SAME THING(SHUTTERING). I WENT TO THE MALL CAME BACK OUT TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE, I STARTED MY CAR TO BACK UP OUT OF THE PARKING SPACE AND NOTHING, NO MOVEMENT IN REVERSE NO MOVEMENT IN DRIVE. CALLED THE DEALER THEY TOLD THAT I HAD TO TAKE IT TO A NISSAN DEALER AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I HAD IT TOW TO A NISSAN DEALER AND THEY TOLD BE THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS COMPLETELY BLOWN AND IT WOULD COST ME $4000 TO GET FIXED. I DONT HAVE 4K TO FIX A TRANSMISSION AND I SHOULDNT HAVE TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION IN A 2013 CAR. I CALLED NISSAN USA, PUT IN A COMPLAINT TWICE THEY DIDNT WANT TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE BECAUSE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BY 2000 MILES. SO HERE IT IS MAY 18, 2016 AND I AM STILL DEALING WITH THIS ISSUE. SOMEONE HAS TO ANSWER...

  • CVT transmission
  • 35,000 miles

I purchased my second Nissan Altima new in 2013 after owning a 2003 Altima for almost 10 years so I guess I could be considered a loyal customer. I wasn't crazy about the CVT transmission but decided to go forward with the purchase despite my concerns. It has been a great car up until a week ago. There were a few times where it would shutter a bit and it would rarely stall while idling but in general, I have been pleased.

I noticed a pretty big jerk from the engine on the way to work yesterday. At lunch, I drove the car to a local restaurant about 2 miles away without incident. When I came back out, I could start the car but it would immediately stall when I put the car into gear. I had it towed to my local Nissan dealership and had to wait 4 hours for them to put me into a rental car. I just found out that they are replacing the entire transmission at 35,000 miles (luckily still covered under warranty). I have done all my service at the Nissan dealership up until this point.

After reading all these complaints, I'm thinking I likely will get my money's worth on my extended warranty (which I purchased after I had engine issues with my 2003 Altima shortly after the warranty expired. Nissan paid for a new engine after my dealer protested which is the only reason I purchased a new Altima).

This will be my last Nissan.

I just got a 2013 Nissan Altima SL with 45,000 6months ago....about a month my car would crank but when I put it in gear it shut off....I was told it was bad gas...about three weeks later it did the same thing this time even worse...the check engine light never came on...Nissan told me they think it was the alternator...I disagreed and drove the car another week and this time it did it again..I took it to a bigger Nissan dealer that took me it was the transmission...it cost $3900 to fix it Nissan won't pay for it because the car now has 65000 miles...I'm really disappoint in them as a company...I had to pay almost $400 dollars for a rental and I can't afford to pay for the repair...I have no choice but to turn the car back into the finance company...so now I'm going to be without a car. this stupid car could've killed me in traffic by cutting off but Nissan doing recalls on these cars...I will never buy a Nissan again...They probably would do any recalls until someone gets killed...very disappointed in the way the handled this situation

Bought my 2013 Altima without researching the issues. Got it taken in to Nissan, they say they found nothing. Car shudders and jerks hard every week at least. I'm thinking about trading in my car for something else. Really sad because I love this car. 3.5 SL is beautiful inside and just the amount of power. The people of Nissan are serious crooks for not recalling these transmissions. These transmissions are dangerous! I'm thinking of suing. How can you not find anything when it's clearly shuddering. • 140,000 miles

I purchased a 2006 Altima and I drove it 85,000 miles gave it to my Daughter to use for College and work presently 190,000 miles and all I did that was not general maintenance was a crank position sensor and Starter

So I go buy a new 2013 Nissan Altima in September 2012, I use in in my sales Job and put 140000 miles on it, several times I complain to the Nissan dealer about the CVT transmission shuddering at highway speeds, they say its Normal.

April 19, 2016 I get off the New Jersey turnpike and the car shudders, the transmission slams into gear and I limp the car home.

I take the car to the dealer and they tell me its going to be $119.00 to troubleshoot the car, no big deal. Two hours later the Service advisor calls me and says the CVT transmission is toast and to replace it it will cost me $3,622.00

He tells me its not a new CVT but a Nissan Remanufactured unit and has a 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty, I say "well what happens in 13 months and I come in and tell you the CVT you just replaced is now shuddering again" Dealer says that wont happen because the Remanufactured unit is different then the CVT that was installed b y the Nissan when the car was built.

I spoke at length with the service advisor, who has been very helpful to say the least and he tells me he will take this to his boss.

So now I call Nissan Consumer Affairs they take my complaint and tell me that Regional Consumer Affairs Officer will contact me in hours. I get a call from the service advisor and he tells me Nissan Corporate wants him to email the entire case to them.

Okay I am open to paying something, but in no way $3,622.00. I have looked on line and can purchase a Nissan OEM Transmission for about $875.00 so it costs over $2,200.00 to install, even at $119.00 per hour that's 18 hours of labor, I cant believe that it would take 18 hours of labor to put in a CVT.

I love my car but now I am real scared of it, anyone out there get a Nissan Remanufactured CVT and been happy with the results, How about those who have dealt with Nissan Consumer Affairs. TIA

  • CVT transmission
  • 75,472 miles

Having major issues with my 2013 Nissian Altima. The problem began with a small jerk one morning on my way to work. When I pulled into the parking lot at my job the car cut off and when I attempted to turn it back on, it came on but as soon I put it drive it cut right back off. After several attempts it started up and I was able to make it to the area where I park. Later that same day the car started just fine but as I was driving it cut off again about 2 miles from my job and would not start and I had to have AAA to tow it in the the dealership service department. I was told by one person that it was the transmission and it would cost between $4,000-$5,000 to fix. That was not the solution that I wanted to hear since I have only had the car for 1 year and 3 months. I was advised by a second person to have someone at the Nissian deal ship to have my car put on a machine to see if there could be another problem and that's what I did. I was then told that the computer in my car needed to be updated so it was replaced with a new computer (that I paid for out of pocket). I was told that my car was fixed and ready to go. I picked my car up on a Wednesday evening after work and it drove fine. Thursday morning I felt a small jerk just like the first time I had problems. I called the dealership and I was told something about CVT recognizing something with the changing of the gears but it was ok. On Friday, the car experience was awful; there was a lot of jerking and not wanting to pull; I was nearly traveling 25mph trying to make it home. I called the service department back and I was told by my description that it sounded like a total overhaul of the transmission. What am I suppose to do now because I have only had my car 1 year and 3 months when these problems started and I can't nor should I have to pay $5000 to fix this transmission problem. Since I have had problems these last few weeks, I have researched and found that many, many, many people are having problems with the CVT transmission and Nissan is not doing anything about it. Can someone please direct in the right direction for HELP!

At 62,000 miles, the transmission on my 2013 Nissan Altima has gone out completely and needs to be replaced. 2,000 outside of warranty

I purchased a Nissan Altima understanding that this was a car that would last me hundreds of thousands of miles. At 62,000 miles, the transmission completely went out. It needs to be replaced.

I contacted Nissan directly, who advised me to get an official diagnosis from a Nissan dealership. I had the car towed to a Nissan dealership and they determined the car did need a new transmission, and the case was submitted for review. Nissan Regional rep called me and stated that because the car had no service records with Nissan, they could not show it had been maintained, and the fact that it was out of warranty, Nissan would not be able to assist with the repair at all.

I assured her I had every oil change and repair receipt, but she said that was not sufficient, that it had to be in the Nissan system. I was never told that the car needed to be maintained at a dealership to be proven. She said that each case is taken and looked at individually, and there were times a good will repair could be made outside of warranty, but in my case she could offer no assistance because of the lack of maintenance records and expired warranty by 2,000 miles.

My car is only 2.5 years old and well taken care of. There is no way, unless its a defect with the car, that the transmission should need to be replaced. But Nissan is refusing to help at all.

Since week one that we bought the 2013 Altima we experienced the shuttering/juttering of the transmission during acceleration and we thought it was bad gas put into the car at purchase. Since then we have experienced the same problem several times throughout the almost 3 years we have owned the car. We have taken it to the dealership several times for this issue and were told that it is "the nature" of the car. A mechanic went for a ride along with us and felt the shuttering/juttering. He told the service advisor that it was the transmission and scheduled a reprogramming of the transmission. The problem continues to this day.

Once in San Francisco (Summer 2015), while trying to accelerate after a traffic light, the car would not move. My husband accelerated until the car finally moved with little power until we entered the Interstate. The dealership continues to ignore the issue and my husband knows there is a definite problem. We have heard that there is a lemon law. What can be done about this? We are not happy with this car!!! We have an extended warranty on this car that we paid for but feel we should not have to use it. This problem is the manufacturers/dealerships problem to fix not ours.

The sad thing is that the car still looks new but we are not satisfied customers. It is an ongoing issue/problem with the dealership.
