The anti theft steering wheel lock switch failed. The car will not start. Car was towed to a Nissan dealer for repair. Nissan has extended the warranty for the same defect in model year 2009 Maximas and Altima. But they say the problem does not exist in 2010 models. Obviously it does.

Left stranded when steering lock failed and car would not start. Part had to be replaced at $780 after towing to dealer. 2009 Nissan Maximas and Altimas have same issue and got extended warranty to cover this cost. Nissan refuses to acknowledge the depth of this same issue for the 2010 model which has the same faulty part and this has angered many loyal Nissan customers.
Based on the number of instances reported, it's clearly a problem that Nissan should make right. Please voice your similar issue so we can get a recall/extended warranty on the 2010 Nisan Maxima to reimburse this huge out of pocket cost.

Same issue as I have been reading. Daughter had car at college, called and said it wouldn't start. Had to have car towed to Dealer. Dealer advises me that Nissan has not done a recall.
Besides the repairs, I had additional $350.00 towing bill!

At 38841 miles, the steering lock on my 2010 NISSAN Maxima failed and I could not start the car until it was replaced on 11/28/14 at a cost of $844. I expect parts problems from normal wear, but research has shown that this part has failed at a much higher than normal rate on both the Maxima and Altima models for at least 6 years. In fact, there was a recall in 2012 or 2013 for an earlier design of this part and the warranty was extended for these earlier parts. However, the part has continued to fail and there were 3 other cars at Landers McLarty NISSAN in Huntsville AL waiting for the same repair.
I contacted Customer Relations at NISSAN to report my problem citing the low mileage and previous ownership of 4 older models to request cost assistance under the terms of the extended warranty but was told on 12/4/14 that my part was not included in the extended warranty and that NISSAN would not make an exception in my case. It is my position that this failure was the result of a poor design and not normal wear; further, I consider their action to be in bad faith.

This is a wheel lock problem that Nissan is well aware of but refuses to recall or pay for the repair of a 2010 model. They extended the warranty on 2009 model Maxima and Altimas but say that the problem does not exist in 2010 models, which they know is nonsense.

THURSDAY MORNING I DROPPED MY KIDS TO SCHOOL AND PARKED MY CAR AT MY APARTMENT UNDER GROUND PARKING. THEN 2 HOUR LATER I HAVE TO TAKE MY WIFE TO HOSPITAL BUT CAR DOESN'T START WITH YELLOW KEY INDICATION AND IGNITION SHOW LOCK. TRIED ALMOST 4 HOURS TO SPEAK WITH LOCAL NISSAN TECHNICIAN BUT UNFORTUNATELY AFTER 4 AND HALF HOURS I GOT ONE CONTACT FROM NISSAN. I DESCRIBE EVERYTHING TO THEM, THEY JUST SAID IT'S BIG ISSUE, YOUR CAR IS IN IMMOBILIZED MOOD AND NEXT DAY WAS FRIDAY, NORMAL OFF IN GULF.
THEY SAID WE CANT DO ANYTHING NOW, IT'S ALMOST CLOSING TIME, WE CALL YOU ON SATURDAY. THEY JUST HANGUP PHONE. I think it is ridiculous that Nissan won't recall this. The fact that Nissan doesn't feel obligated to resolve this matter will cause you to loose my business and everyone I come in contact with will hear my story and I hope they don't by a Nissan. I have researched this and this is an ongoing problem that Nissan needs to step up and take responsibility for.
I missed a very important meeting for work and may lose my job due to my car not starting. I had to pay tow bill right at $100 and then parts and labor almost $1300. At least Toyota had the point of view to do a recall and fix it right instead of your Nissan's point of view to avoid the recall just because it isn't a danger issue.

My wife got stranded at work, she said her smart key wasn't working. When I arrived to help her out thinking it was just her key with a dead battery, I found out my key also did not work. The steering wheel would not lock and the brake peddle felt stiff, nothing worked. When I would press the start button, it would just read "lock" and a red key light would flash.
I had the car towed to the Nissan dealership and they diagnosed it that it was the steering lock mechanism. The following day I was told that that part was on restriction and they could not get the part because Nissan would not release it and that they have no timeline of when they can get the part. They told me call 1-800-NISSAN-1 and talk to consumers affairs. Do now I have to deal towing my car out of Nissan dealership because they can only hold the car for a week. Now I'm out of a car and still making payments on it. Does anybody have similar problem and can give me some advise?

There is a known issue with the Electronic steering column lock mechanism on the 2009 Maxima which has already been covered by Nissan with a 72 month / unlimited mileage warranty. For some unknown reason, this coverage was not extended to 2010 models which are experiencing the exact same issue (with the exact same part!) My 2010 Maxima just experienced this problem which renders the vehicle totally helpless and requires a completely new part ($500) plus labor at a Nissan dealer. This is a well documented issue and should be corrected by the manufacturer to include the 2010 model year Maxima.

I purchased a used 2010 Maxima a little under a year ago. Everything has been almost perfect until me and my 3 year old son went to the grocery store only to come out and find that the car would not start. After getting it towed to the dealership I was informed that the Electronic Steering Lock went up and it is a major issue through out the world.
You guys have a recall on the 09s but not the 10s? I don't understand when it's the same exact issue. The dealership told me it's 900 dollars to fix it and they don't know when the part would be in. What kind of crap is this Nissan? This is my only means of transportation and you mean to tell me I can be without my car for month's? That's not acceptable when you guys are fully aware of this situation. Please, I am a single father trying to get by. I don't have a extra 900 dollars laying around. Please consider recalling the 2010 model's as well.

I came out to my Maxima from shopping and car just would not start - engine would not engage and steering wheel 'locked'. Could not push in the start button in. 'Key' symbol showing on dash, but Manual unclear as to how to address isue. So called "intelligent" key opened trunk, doors, etc., but would not start my car! I tried both keys and also inserted them into the dash directly - No Go. It was a very dangerous situation to be a woman alone at night in a shopping plaza parking lot. Had to have the car TOWED to a local Nissan Dealership Service Center the next day as this was a Sunday night. My car is totally Disabled!
They reported to me that there was a part (electrical? computer?) in the steering column which must be replaced. Told me the part will cost close to $500 and the Labor close to $300! Ridiculous for a high end luxury vehicle! Service Center told me since I have more than 36,000 miles, repair not covered. I do not agree as Nissan cannot avoid their responsibility to a customer by having an "express" Warranted. There is still "Implied" Warranties and Waranties of Merchantability - in other words something you purchase SHOULD work properly for a reasonable amount of time. I consider this a MA General Laws Chapter 93A Issue as a violation of our Consumer Protection statutes. After reading these posts, it is clear that Nissan is fully aware of the issue and has had repeated complaints.
I believe that Nissan should cover this repair and FAULTY part - which they manufacture and/place in their vehicles. I have contacted Nissan Corp., who transferred me to the 'Consumer Complaint' division. They promised to expedite the complaint and have it addressed by the Regional Office "by the next business day", and offered to reimburse substitute transportation for up to 3 days while the situation is being addressed, however the Nissan Service Center which has my vehicle said they will not have a rental available for two more days and I'm stranded with friends driving me around!
I will update this when I find out what response occurs from the Regional office. I am very disappointed in Nissan at this point as I do believe Corporate should have just given the local Nissan Service Center the go-ahead to Repair, asap. I hope that they will stand by their product or I plan to trade this Maxima in and NEVER buy another Nissan again, even though I've had four other Nissan's in the past with absolutely no problems. This is the most expensive one I've had and now I'm stranded and held Hostage to pay for an expensive and unnecessary repair! WHAT HAPPENED TO NISSAN and Customer Service????

On a freezing winter evening, I was stranded because my steering column lock mechanism failed on my 2010 (manufactured in 2009) Maxima . I called the dealer. They told me that this was a dealer only part and thus I would have to tow it to a dealer to get it fixed. Basically, if i ever wanted to drive my 2010 car with only 49,000 miles on it I had to get it done at a dealer. I was told the part would cost $532.80. I was told by the dealer that while my car was out of warranty I should contact Nissan (1-800-Nissan!) because they extended the warranty on Altima's and 2009 and some 2010 Maxima's. They told me there was nothing they could do but there is a chance Nissan should do something since my car had low millage, I have been a loyal customer and this has been a chronic problem. I was told that it would take 3 days to get a part. Since I need my car to get to work, this delay was a huge burden on me. I told them I would pay to have the part overnight shipped from any where in the country to get it fixed. I was informed that there were no parts available. They said I had to wait 3 days for a new part number to be available. It sounded like Nissan was fire fighting a big problem with a Nation wide shortage of a small part and they had to redesign. After waiting 3 days, the part arrived at the dealer. When the dealer went to install the part, the part physically did not fit. After 3 more days the dealer, the dealer received and installed a part that physically fit. I was informed that the new part number for the Steering lock Mechanism price had increased from $532.80 to $1021.36 ! This is a $488.56 (92%) increase. I was shocked beyond belief. How could such a small part (> 4â€x 3†x 2â€) and weighs about >2 lbs increase so much! I seriously doubt that the steering lock mechanism > 3% the cost of a new car.
The dealer nor Nissan could give me an answer. When I asked what my options were I a was basically told if I wanted to get my car I had to pay this price no matter how unreasonable and extortive. If I did not pay this, they Nissan would keep my car. Basically, since this is a dealer only part they have created an unfair monopoly. You cannot start your car without this operating. Nissan can take your car hostage and then extort any amount of money they feel like charging or you will never drive your car again. What is worst this a chronic problem that Nissan knows about. They have extended warranties on similar cars. They have redesigned the part several times. This seems wrong both from an ethical and legal perspective.
In parallel I was trying to get information and from Nissan (1 800 Nissan1). They were slow to respond. When I was able to talk to someone live they could not answer any questions beyond what they have on a script. It took me >20 calls to get a hold of a supervisor. They would not research nor put me in contact with anyone to answer any of my technical, Business or customer service question. They do a great job frustrating you and wearing you down if you have a question or a complaint. They hope you will eventually go away after they have unfairly extorted money from you.

After researching this issue, I found out that this problem is widespread. This particular part (part # 48700-9N00B) electronic steering lock was included under an extended warranty (beyond the 3 year, 36k miles) for the 2009 Maxima because of such widespread issues. Apparently the problem is widespread for the 2010 Maxima as well, but Nissan has yet to step up and include it in the extended warranty. They did however offer to pay for half of it but I will not accept that. This should absolutely be covered and 100% paid for by Nissan.

Went to start my 2010 Nissan Maxima this morning for work and it would not start. The yellow key light indicator was lit on the dash, brake was hard to press. The car would not change from "LOCK" mode to "ACC" or "ON" position. The car would not start, doors would unlock with the fob but the car would do nothing else. Reading the manual, I was able to tell what the indicator light meant. While waiting for the tow truck to arrive I searched the result and was shocked to see all the complaints on the same malfunction and how this has not been labeled as a recall due to the high volume of complaints. Basically the steering wheel control lock will not disengage leaving you stranded. There has been a recall on the 2009 Altima and Maxima but not the 2010 which uses the same part. From what I have read the repair cost run around $800-$1000. Waiting now for the Nissan dealership to call me back.

So I bought this 2010 Maxima about a year ago and have had no problems and taken great care of the car with regular maintenance checks and oil changes as needed. I go golfing yesterday and car works just fine as it did every day before this but when I get done golfing, I go to start my car and it won't start or do anything. I keep getting the key light warning and checked the manual which basically told me the car won't start because the steering control lock is engaged and won't disengage...why?!? My key fob works just fine for opening doors and the trunk and panic button but for some reason the car doesn't recognize it and so I'm stranded with a car that won't start because it thinks I'm a thief trying to steal my OWN CAR! This is a theft protection item that, from what I've read online and in forums, has screwed up on a number of 2009 and 2010 Nissans with no help from Nissan to fix it besides paying the 700-1000 to get it fixed...well guess what, I'd rather not have fixed something that can just as easily happen again. Why would something that doesn't even help the car run cause the car not to start...this is baffling and absolutely ridiculous when I tried to call Nissan to get insight...JOKE!

I currently have an issue with my Maxima 2010 which I bought on November 2010. Two days ago (7 May 2013), my car failed to start its engine showing a warning signal of a missing intelligent key. After hours of trying every possible workaround including uncabling the battery and trying the backup key, I towed the car to the dealer maintenance center. Today I received a call from the maintenance center and was informed that my car has a defect in its steer lock system which needs to be replaced. They informed me that the part number to replace is 48700-9N00B and costs around 800 USD, is not available at the warehouse and needs to be transported from Japan, expected to arrive in more than one month. Now that 36 months warranty has expired, I strongly believe that this is a manufacturing defect that needs to be completely handled by Nissan. I did some research on the issue and found that there are so many Nissan owners (maxima, altima, GTR, Murano etc...) that got exactly the same issue. Moreover it seems that Nissan USA has acknowledged this issue and started to recall and refund the affected customers in April 2013.

I Owned 3 Nissan Maximas so far!! The engine is normally good but the power steering parts SUCK!! That higher pressure hoses on my previous nissan constantly have leaks. Nissan Hoses are terrible according many mechanics who work on Nissans. Currently the power steering pump failed after 48000 miles.I talked to several Nissan Mechanics and they all said the same thing - "wow"! Nissan has some defective parts and components that are being placed on their otherwise good engines. What the hell is being done about this?? Not only that but the Nissan dealer (Flagstaff AZ) here in this Small town want's an ARM leg to repair the component -- a total Rip Off for repairs and the prices on new vehicles. This small Flagstaff, AZ dealer tried to sell a women a new car for brake problem and quoted her $1000 dollars repair cost. The repair done for 300 at nearby import shop.

There is an Extended recall for some models according to VIN number, Not year. So a 2010 Nissan Max with VIN number "A" will be covered for free but not VIN number "B"
It's a joke and clearly a rip off by Nissan not recalling all cars. They know this is a problem and are doing the cheap way out. I have opened a case and will Blast this company with lawyers, News media, and social media if they do not cover my cost!!!
