Manifold gasket leaking (I also owned a '91 Pathfinder that had to have each manifold gasket replaced twice). Several transmission parts req'd replacement as well as the computer that drives the transmission.
- Santa Cruz, CA, USA
Right oem manifold #4, installed by Nissan is warped and leaking exhaust again. This is now the 6th one to be replaced counting both right and left. All replaced using oem equipment, purchased and installed by authorized Nissan dealer
- Mineral Point, PA, USA
There exists a condition where the exhaust manifold warps, shearing the bolts. This is a $500+ repair job. This has been known to Nissan since (at least) 1992. Yet they continued to manufacture a flawed design. Is this not fraud? NHTSA states on the website that safety-related failures must be repaired by the mfg- in this case, if the vehicle is at idle exhaust fumes enter the cabin, and can suffocate those inside.
- Webster, NY, USA
Exhaust manifold bolts are failing, causing exhaust leaks. This is a well known and documented problem (tsb94041) that any mechanic will attest to. Total repair is $800 for both sides. Nissan refuses to offer any help in the matter. Carbon monoxide may enter the vehicle if it is not fixed.
- Charleston, SC, USA
Exhaust leak on right side due to cracked bolts and warped manifold. There is a posted recall for the 1996- 1998 Pathfinder that have this same problem, why would this not cover earlier years if this is a known manufacturer defect.
- Alexandria, VA, USA
Right exhaust manifold replaced, then 40000 or so miles later bolts broken on both the right and left manifold. Reverse in the transmission did not work, had to replace the complete transmission. Drivers sunvisor is bad design, you have problems seeing when it is down.

This problem involves the exhaust manifold and the bolts that secure it to the engine head. Thousands of mechanics around the world will testify that Nissan is well aware of the design flaw inherent in the manifold. HereS what happenssuper heated exhaust fires out from the piston head and is captured by the manifold. But, due to the angle of the manifold curve (the bend in the metal piping) the gas hits the metal too head on and over-heats the manifold. The heat is so intense that it warp the metal. The toque of the bending metal is so strong it literally shears the bolts that are supposed to secure the manifold to the head. The metal should never get that hot, yet it does solely because of NissanS design flaw. According to the Nissan dealer I talked with.this problem then leaks carbon monoxide into the car. One mechanic said he sees maybe 4 of these every two weeks! (Pathfinder and maximas) this problem is costing consumers a lot of money. Please help.
- Aurora, IL, USA
Exhaust manifolds have both been replaced due to them warping and the leaking exhaust. They were replaced at 75,000 and 90,191 miles. Now at 143500 the right one is warped and leaking exhaust again. From what I have learned, this had been an ongoing problem with Nissan and this engine in the trucks and Pathfinders. None of the work done to repair these problems has been covered by any warranty.
- Mineral Point, PA, USA
There is a ticking noise every time the vehicle is started, which lessens as the engine warms up. I was told it was an exhaust leak caused by a bolt that had been sheared off causing a gap between the exhaust and the manifold. Also, that this was a very common problem reported on Pathfinder's.
- Jacksonville, FL, USA
Bolts are snapping off and the engine manifold is breaking.dealer was contacted, and stated because the consumer went to another dealer Nissan will not be held liable.
- Miland, IN, USA
I have recently had to replace my right exhaust manifold due to a very noisy "leak" including exhaust leaking into the passenger compartment (rotten egg smell) with the ventilation system running!!! not a good situation to have. The mechanic at town North Nissan (austin, tx) said that either the manifold bolts or the gasket failure caused the manifold to distort, causing the leak. After 2 weeks, I have noticed that the left manifold is now leaking at the gasket too. The labor and 2 new manifolds will cost a total of $1000 to fix. I have talked to a lot of Nissan Pathfinder owners that have noticed the samething. See web site Saturn.guestworld.tripod.lycos.com/wgb/wgbview.dbm?owner=pathqa for more information.
- Austin, TX, USA
Right exhaust manifold leaks causing the fumes to enter the passenger compartment.
- Madison, NH, USA
Every time vehicle is started a ticking noise happens. After warmed up noise goes away. Noise in exhaust manifold. An intermittent problem that happens when weather is cold. Not at dealership yet.
- New York, NY, USA
Left and right exhaust manifold studs failed.
