Pathfinder SE 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission

Nissan has a defective radiator which allows both the transmission and radiator fluid to mix and destroy both parts. Completely Nissan's fault yet they will not offer assistance in the repair.

My 2005 Nissan Pathfinder is one of many others wher the coolant leaked into the transmission. Extended warranty is up to 100,000 miles but i've got 122,125 miles and Nissan is not going to fix this known problem because i'm over the warranty. A new transmission and radiator cost 6,600 and 4,600 for the rebuilt transmission. What shall i do ?

Obviously a Nissan engineering issue. Transmission was shuddering for about 3 months, only solution was to remove from overdrive and guzzle gas! Radiator finally failed as well. Nissan won't do a thing but at least customer service 'completely understands my problem'. Understands, just won't pony up a dime toward a mass-produced faulty design!

Pathfinder 4.0L V6

The issue is clearly a design or factory default. A two second internet search will tell you that. Nissan knows about it because I asked the repair man at the dealer. These things don't piss me off nearly as much as the following:

6 months ago I took my pathfinder into the dealer for an oil change. They looked the car over and told me my coolant was a little low and the transmission fluid needed to be flushed. I asked if these were things to worry about and they said "no" I told them not to do the flush and I would add coolant myself. They did the flush anyway and tried to bill me. After I complained they gave the flush for free. My fury comes in right here. If they knew this is such a huge problem and there are preventative fixes why not warn me then and not wait till I need a new transmission.

I bought this 2005 Nissan Pathfinder just 6 months ago, no engine light, ran great, all around awesome vehicle. then a couple months went by check engine light came on. Took it to autozone had a reading done got a code back for my gas cap, i was told to tighten gas cap and light would go off. The light went off, but only for a couple days, took it back to autozone for another reading, still same code came up and was advised to buy a new gas cap, so i did, light went off once again, problem solved. Two weeks later check engine light on again, took the vehicle back to autozone for another reading, at this visit i was advised off all these different codes saying i had transmission problems, computer problems, catalytic converter problems, just a range of codes were popping up, this is when i found out about the radiator/transmission fluids leaking and combining with each other to destroy the transmission. After this it seemed like my vehicle just went down hill from there, it stalled while on my way to take my son to tutoring class in the morning, it stalled in traffic while i was driving to the store, now my car wont even accelerate when i put it in drive, it just sits. This is a manufacturing problem that Nissan has failed to address, and only wants to put a extended warranty out up to 80,000 miles, when most people don't even have the issue until after the 80,000 miles. I called 1800nissan1 and they advised me that my VIN was under the extended warranty for the radiator/transmission issue, and i was still within the time frame of the warranty, but i was over the mileage. What a load of crap!!!!! Now i am stuck with having to pay anywhere from 1800.00 $$$ and Up for a manufacturing problem, and i just bought my vehicle 6 months ago. WOW

problem of a pulling and down shifting started after dealer recommended a transmission flush on my vehicle a week after. Been advised by another dealer where i bought my pathfiner from to trade it now while it is still in running condition because transmission fluid was found in the coolant and radiator was now contaminating the whole unit. It would be about $6800.00 to repair and there recommendation was to trade it now!!!!!

Pathfinder SE 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 110,000 miles

I was driving through a intersection at about 25 mph and the car suddenly rev'd and didn't move forward at all, the cars had to slam on there brakes and i was almost hit from behind and on the drivers side barely got out of that... had the car taken to nissan where we were quoted $8000 in repairs(i don't have that money). we took it to another shop to have the transmission rebuilt and radiator replaced (cost $3600) and the problem was the radiator fluid leaking into the transmission. I called the dealer we bought it from and was told it was not their problem unless the car is under warranty (110,000 miles on it) so out of warranty. This has been a huge stress and burden on my family and nissan could care less i really hope someone helps us this problem is ridiculous.

And i used to take pride in this car...

My 2005 Nissan Pathfinder back in June of 2011 started acting up and I took it into the dealer so they could take a look at it. They took it out and said it seemed like the transmission was the issue. I had then looked on line and found that others had the same issue and Nissan new about it. The Nissan techs said that my radiator wasn't cracked so no fluid had leaked into the transmission but that the transmission needed to be flushed. That seemed to fix the issue. Now fast forward a year and it is doing it again. Just took it to a local transmission shop and they looked at it. Well guess what the radiator is now cracked and has leaked into the transmission. Quoted a price of over 4400.00 dollars to fix. How is it if Nissan knew this was an issue they didn't do a recall. I have been a loyal Nissan buyer as my last 5 cars my wife and I have bought have been Nissans, but this really pisses me off. I don't have an extra 4400 dollars to spend and I can't really afford to buy a new car. The Pathfinder has 146,000 miles on it but still looks great and I haven't had a ton of issues with it but I am really disappointed with Nissan and not sure I will ever buy another Nissan again.

I see this is a problem with Nissan 2005 Pathfinders. After speaking with there wonderful person, not, she said you didn't take it to Nissan to diagnose and your mileage is too high. Nissan is aware of this problem and is not willing to do anything. I will issue this complaint on all the forums possible because something has to be done about this. Nissan is turning their head even after a class action lawsuit is pending. Stay away from Nissan. They refuse to help their consumers.

Pathfinder 4.0L V6

  • 112,555 miles

This pathfinder was bought brand spanking new. It just kills me how many problems this hunk of junk has cost us. Once it hit 95,000 miles if it wasn't one thing it was something else. Then it started making a funny noise. We had no idea that it was so bad. The dealer told us the radiator had leaked into the transmission. I started crying when I heard how much it would be this time for repairs. New radiator, new transmission and new switch so crazy. I think that Nissan should pay for this repair because it is a error in their designs. We received a letter from Nissan about the problem but our vehicle was over the mileage allowance. So we pay. We will never buy another Nissan or recommend it, all we do is complain about everything that has happened to anyone who will listen. I have been asked by many people how I like my pathfinder and it just gets me going. We are very disappointed.

I'm one like many others where the coolant leaked into transmission and Nissan is not going to fix this known problem. In my case my vehicle is over 100k miles and not covered under any warranty. I now have to pay out of pocket about $6,000 to fix this problem that Nissan knows about and caused. They should be held accountable and fix everyone's vehicle with this known problem. No owner should have to pay for this mistake from Nissan. If Nissan does not fix this problem and as of right now I will never, never buy from Nissan in my life and I will continue to pass this information to all my friends,co-workers and relatives. Known owners with this problem we should protest in front of Nissan dealers and get media attention. Nissan has to pay for this and we should not settle for less and be victims of this Fraud. --Mrs. B.G, Fresno, CA

It's awful for the dealer who is aware of a major defect to charge a valued customer $$$ to repair a problem when they know it's just a band aid repair. Problem happened again within the warrenty period and now the dealer is stating that a new transmission and radiator is required ($4,800). However, they are not willing to at least credit the $1,200 previously spent which is still under warrenty (12 mo/12k Miles) Totally incrediable and unacceptable. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pathfinder V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 50,400 miles

I purchased my 2005 nissan pathfinder on 6/30/2012. BIG BIG MISTAKE!!!!! I took my vehichle to the Nissan dealer because my check engine light was on, my gas reading was inccorrect and when I started my car it didn't warm up at all until you drive the vehile for several miles and the vehicle was just running like crap (to put in nice words). I received a call several hours later and was told that fluid had leaked into the transmission and that I would have to replace the transmission, radiator, and there were a few other things such as I had to purchase a thermostat and they did a replacement on the ECM relay due to a recall. I purchased an extended warranty when I purchased the vehicle so basically what I was told is that Nissan would cover the transmission, radiator, and ecm relay and my extended warranty would cover some other stuff however i had to pay my 100.00 deductible plus the thermostat. Ok ok I did. I drove the car away from the service station and guess what my check engine light came back on and my gas gauge was still reading inaccurate. Well took the vehicle back in and by the way was treated like crap (put in nice words). I was told now that it is the ECU for vent conrol valve and had to pay another 100.00n deductible because of course that was covered under my extended warranty that I purchased. Well drove the vehicle after that was fixed off the lot at 1:00 which is the time they close and about 1/2 mile down the road the engine light came on. Well took it back and now was told that my evap canistar internally failed and the purge volume conrol valve and evap conrol system pressure needs replaced. It would only cost me over 500.00 to fix. I am so irate typing this right now that some is coming out of my ears. I just purchased this vechicle and it only has 50,000 miles on it. Very disappointed in my purchase and will never ever by a nissan again.

Experienced major vibration and poor transmission perfomance for months prior to the entire thing going out. We had our struts replaced, the vehicle balanced, and many other things done to fix this. Turns out, this is a common issue with this model and year. Nice. Step one of many to get this resolved.

I just recently relocated to CT. Before driving here from MS, I took my 2005 Pathfinder to Gary Daniels Nissan in Jackson, MS to have the transmission /radiator flushed and changed. They never mentioned that I had this issue of intermixing of fluids. I even advised them that I am driving 1300 miles to CT. When I arrived here, my engine light came on. Took it to the Nissan dealership in Wilton,CT and they advised that this issue is the problem and that I have to pay out of pocket because I have more than 100,000 miles on the vehicle. I came on here and found the class action suit and read that if the vehicle is less than 10 years old OR 100,000, Nissan will pay after $3000, which still is not good enough. I've only received one notification of a recall and promptly took it into Nissan and had it fixed. I just don't understand, this is a MAJOR issue, yet they FAILED to notify people properly and expect for them to pay for their MISTAKE!

It would have been nice (sarcasm) if Nissan and/or dealer would have advised of the common problem so the customer could at least be on the lookout and possibly prevent transmission fluid contamination. Dealer is quoting transmission replacement above the rates I've read about else-where.

My radiator failed and got cross contamination. In Canada the Nissan fix is flush the tranny and replace the rad. They will not even acknowledge at the dealership level that will put the transmission back into the same condition prior to the cross contamination. No warranty on the work. My own research in discussions with many transmission repair shops and Nissan service is that flushing will not save the tranny, it is doomed. Seems like a make work deal for dealers.

Nissan - common radiator/transmission meltdown occurred 15,000 km after replacing the transmission already. This was 800 km AFTER my protection plan ran out. Nissan covered it less a $3000 deductible! yikes!
