Pathfinder 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 87,000 miles

I've owned three straight Nissan vehicles over the past 16 years, with few problems, and have always recommended Nissan to friends and family, UNTIL NOW!

We have a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder with 87,000 miles, and it's currently beginning to experience the same transmission/radiator cooling system problem that many others have dealt with in this model, and similar Nissan models. We discovered the problem because our vehicle's transmission was starting to occasionally rumble when shifting gears. When we took the vehicle to our shop, we were advised that there was a common defect with this model Nissan and the radiator and transmission fluids mixing. Both the radiator and transmission now have to be replaced.

I learned that there was a recent lawsuit settlement around this issue. As per the settlement, Nissan extended the warranty on these vehicles, but there was a catch. Vehicles with less than 80,000 miles will be repaired fully at Nissan's expense. However, vehicle owners with between 80K-90K miles have to pay a $2500 deductible for the repairs. So, I now have to pay $2500 for repairs from a defect of which Nissan was aware.

Due to the fact that this is not an isolated problem, and Nissan obviously won't stand fully behind its products, as of now, I will never buy another Nissan again. I will also do my best to ensure that everyone I know, or encounter never buys a Nissan. I work in law enforcement and encounter people on a daily basis who's vehicles have been crashed, or broken down, so I will be the first influence they may have on a new vehicle.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 106,000 miles

Had had my car serviced less than two weeks before to replace my battery and because three lights related to my brakes - 4 wheel drive light would not go off and two other lights - the ABS and one other. I thought them being on was related to the low battery. At any rate, I was told that that the the lights were on because of a sensor related problem. I asked questions but resulted in me having the work done to correct the sensor problem. However, within a day or so, I noticed vibrating when at a stop that I had not noticed before. I called the dealership up and told them about the problem and that it started after they had serviced my car and that I wasn't paying anything but that they needed to take a look at my car to see what they perhaps did that caused the vibrating. Long story short, I was told that the vibrating they believe is caused by coolant getting into the transmission line. I knew nothing of this Pathfinder malfunction until the service person mentioned it. I asked them why as a long time customer and someone who had purchased their car from them new...why I had not been made aware of this problem. They said Mam, the cutoff was 100k...and of course conveniently my mileage is at 106k. I have problem been to Nissan for servicing 3 or 4 times since November....and before 100k miles. By the way....the repair cost quoted to me wsa $6000...replacement of both my transmission and my radiator. I'm so angry but have to stay angry and take action. If this is such a tremendous problem, why was there no recall on these vehicles? Nissan has made defective vehicles, know this, and have not reached out to their customers to correct every customer impacted. I should not have found out about this in this manner but should have been notified when they were made aware of the problem. I paid off my car that certainly looks great and is/was I thought in great condition....laughable huh..because now I need a new transmission and radiator....just unbelievable...profit at their customers expense.

I took my car to the Nissan service to get it checked for Heavy vibration while accelerating and making shuddering noises. I received a call back from the Nissan service representative to let me know how much is my damage. $8900 will cost me to repair the transmission. This is a known issues with the Pathfinders and I was never informed from Nissan about get a recall notice. Coolant got into the transmission and once mixed it kills the valves, seals and torque converter. This is the last Nissan car I will ever buy from Nissan again. Nissan knew about this problem and did nothing to prevent it but they are willing to charge me $8900 to get it fix... This is total rip off and crook business..

My Pathfinder left me on the side of the road!!! If Nissan would have just done a recall on the part in question then none of us would be going thought this crap!!!! NISSAN should PAY for everything. It's their fault for sitting on their hands and letting it go this far. I have no clue what it will cost to get mine fixed. Sll I know is it will be too much!!! I will NEVER buy from NISSAN again and the sad thing is I have 2. I hope when it does get in front of a judge, he will make them pay for everything!!!!!!

I just had the transmission rebuilt and radiator replaced at 117100 miles. I started noticing rough shifting and slippage in transmission about a month ago. Brought the vehicle to the Nissan dealership where I purchased the vehicle back in 2006 and they basically told me that they found metal debris in the transmission fluid and that the transmission needed to be replaced. They DID NOT tell me anything about radiator coolant leaking into the transmission causing all the problems. So, I brought the vehicle to an independent transmission repair shop and they quickly confirmed that the issue was indeed from the radiator failing and the coolant leaking into the transmission. So, $5443 later I am back on the road. I just picked it up today so I don't really have any other updates. I will NEVER buy Nissan again due to this whole nightmare. Hopefully, one day, Nissan will own up to the mistake and compensate us for the repairs.

This transmission and coolant problem is very obvious among a lot of 2006 pathfinders. there should be an immediate recall, or class action lawsuit for compensation of cost, the inconvenience, loss of time at work, rental car, towing, etc.

please inform me of any of the above actions (thank-you)

sometime in august after i had gotten home and park my truck, i heard 3 popping sound coming from it after about 30 mins of it being parked. so i looked underneath to see if anything was leaking and even lifted the hood to see if there was a problem. it wasnt, not until a the following month when it started pulling slow and would not go over 40 mph.

so i took it to jack ingram mind you they had a recall on my vehicle in march but told me i had to pay for the recall which i though was very strange because i had never heard of consumers having to pay for a recall so i didnt get it. didnt know this would contribute to the problem. my significant other took the pathfinder back to jack ingram with his brother (and the both are over 6'6) and they had no problem getting the recall park address that was contributing to the transmission and radiator problem which i still have the estimate of $3500 of. he ask what that was for and why i had to pay and they acted like they had never seen me or spoke with me about anything and the person that printed the info was off that day.

why is it woman are treated different when it comes to cars being service and people try to milk you for every cent. he found out that the fluids of the radiator and transmission had mixed and for the dealership to address the issue it would be $4000 which we took the truck somewhere else. the radiator cost me $205 and the dealership transmission fluid was $180 for a case as well as some other things i had to purchase from autozone. not to mention the dealership charged me twice of $100 to put it on that machine within the same month.

the second place we took the truck to said that the it was only the 2nd gear going bad which i had never heard of and he also stated that sensor and wires needed to be replaced which again i dont know what he is talking of but i know jack ingram said nothng of this.

so we went to a 3rd place and they said the same as the 2nd place and really i find it oddly strange that im being told this and not by the dealership itself. we are trying to address the issue at hand but for now the truck stalls at lights and pulls very slow. im looking to be in a major accident sometime soon because the dealership is about making money. maybe when someone dies they will address the issues. i know about the nissan raidiator / transmission cooler reimbursement claims which i have submitted paperwork on the matter. i really dont expect to receive anything from the claim since all the claims ive been reading have stated that theres a loop hole which most have not been reimbursed for funds spent to resolve the issue. im really considering of getting rid of this vehicle and take it as a loss.

Previously owned a 2006 Pathfinder. In May of 2011, it blew up on a local highway, Had it towed to my Nissan dealer only to have it sit ther for a week with no loaner car available for me. After many phone calls, the Nissan mechanic told me it would need a new radiator. He also stressed other things it would need like front brakes, which were fine. The dealership was rude and the mechanics were hard to find. Cat and mouse situation big time. I had the vehicle towed to a local mechanic who properly diagnosed the problem being that, the radiator leaked into the transmission, destroying the transmission. Upon calling Nissan USA, found them to be LESS helpful than my local dealership. After four months of crap and roughly four-thousand dollars, I had a car back, no thanks to Nissan. My car never ran the same again and I was never comfortable with the safety of the vehicle again, not to mention terrible customer service. I traded in my beloved Pathfinder for a new, reliable car from a company with GREAT customer service in May 2012.I will NEVER buy a Nissan again! To all who read this, take warning. You cannot trust a company that does not stand by their product. I just want to be reimbursed with however much I can so I can start replacing those retirement funds I was forced to use to fix my car. Thanks Nissan..........NOT!

Very frustrating!...I first noticed warning signs a while back (before 80,000 miles), but didn't think it was serious enough to get checked out. Eventually the problem got bad enough for me to do a little online research and have the vehicle checked out at my local Nissan dealership. Found out that coolant had leaked into transmission causing major damage. Need to replace radiator and transmission. Nissan extended the warranty to 80,000 miles, but I have 86,000 miles on my Pathfinder so I have to pay a $2500 co-pay. If I would have known that I would have to replace the transmission at 86,000 miles, I never would have bought a Pathfinder in the first place. If this problem is so common Nissan should take care of their costumers better. Perhaps a recall is in order?

Pathfinder LE

  • Automatic transmission

Pathfinder began vibrating when accelerating at around 35 - 40 mph - I had just replaced tires so had them rebalanced - Problem persisted - Took it to Nissan dealer - They quickly diagnosed problem as slipping transmission due to a mixing of coolant and transmission fluid - Told me Nissan had just re-extended the extended warranty on this problem to cover vehicles up to 100K miles - Acknowledged that problem occurred due to a faulty radiator internal connection which cracked causing the mixing of fluids - Generously offered, through the extended extended warranty, to fix the car for $3000 - While I appreciate the help they provided, it is obviously a known issue caused by a manufacturing defect in a radiator they provided in the car - They have not taken responsibility for this problem even though it is obviously theirs - If they had notified owners when they discovered the widespread problem, could the issue have been avoided by replacing the radiator ($500) - We will never know, because they have endeavored to get out of this as cheaply as possible rather than taking care of the clients who have taken care of them for so many years - This is my third Pathfinder, and prior to that I had two different Datsun 280Z's, more if you include extended family - It is a shame that I will not own another of their products

The transmission plus radiator were replaced @ 76536 . The car went 5000 miles radiator blew up again. Fortunately car was turned off and radiator replaced by dealer . The car now has 104000 and the problem has occurred again. Waiting to hear from dealer . Hopefully I'm covered. This should be a recall they replaced my radiator with one which has the exact same defect ,and I have to go though this nightmare again. This is the 4th radiator and 2nd transmission in 6 years 104000. miles in a car that costs 28585. I cant see how the United States allows a foreign car company to sell product that is defective to the American public. If the Nissan dealer had told me they where putting the same defective radiator in my car I would have replaced it with an aftermarket unit which most transmission shops are using or an external transmission cooler. Corporate greed is killing Nissan and preventing them from doing the right thing.

Pathfinder LS V6

I had transmission problems, the transmission started vibrating and then would not move. I took to a local transmission shop, they advised there was a problem in the radiator causing damage to transmission.

I took it to Nissan dealer & they advised that Nissan had extended the warranty to 80,000 miles due to the radiator, however Nissan had not sent any information regarding a problem and extending the warranty. If I had known there was a problem with radiator, I would have had it checked prior to the 80,000 miles.

Then Nissan sends a letter that they are extending the warranty to 100,000 miles with a $3,000 dollar deductible. If I had received a letter earlier from Nissan about the problem, I would have taken the Nissan to a dealer prior to the 80,000 miles. So now I am stuck with a bill for $3,000 dollars. I feel Nissan was negligent in not advising their customers of the problem earlier.

The dealer then called me and told me that the timing chain was worn and needed to be replaced at a cost of 2,000 dollars. My Nissan has less than 100.000 miles and the radiator, transmission and timing chain are faulty and Nissan should cover these charges.

On 11/19/12, my pathfinder's transmission failed. I took it into a dealer & was told that I needed a new transmission. I received a quote of $6,900 which did not include labor or radiator OR a used transmission for $4,554. I was later referred to a certified mechanic by my co-worker. This mechanic told me that there was a design flaw that Nissan has been aware of for a couple years yet did nothing for us as a consumers. This issue is affecting Pathfinders, Xterra & Frontiers. His cost to repair? $3000 - $3500 which would include 24 months OR 36,000 miles warranty. He needed to order a part which is exclusive to Nissan - cost of $1000+. He would also have to replace the radiator & lines. He recommended I call Nissan Consumer to see if they would be willing to repair the vehicle.

Today (11/26) I called Nissan Consumer Affairs & was told that they sent out a notification last month that would allow for consumers to extend the warranty to 10 years or 100K miles with a consumer deductible of $3,000. The lady asked if I was saying I was not interested. I had to remind this woman that this would not apply to me as my vehicle has 127,000+ miles! This is horrible! Nissan failed to disclose a simple thing as a radiator leak which could have been an easy fix for let's say under $500! Now I'm faced with ridiculous quotes through no fault of my own! Something must be done! Nissan must pay!1

The car overheated while driving in the morning. In the afternoon it seemed fine. I took it to my mechanic and he saw no signs of anything at first. He kept it to look at it the next day and came to the conclusion that there was transmission fluid in the coolant and coolant fluid in the transmission. The radiator broke and the car was not allowed to be driven. The cost would be over $5,000.00. My 2006 Nissan Pathfinder LE had 93,000 miles on it and therefore the extended warranty (80,000) was not covered by it. I called Nissan several times and received no call backs. I started calling local service departments of Nissan and they all told me that I would have to pay 20% of the cost to fix the vehicle. HOWEVER, even after the problem is "fixed", there is no guarantee that it won't happen again or something else awful happening. This was my only car and I have 2 children to take care of as well as work full time. Nissan was not accommodating at all.

I have a 2006 Nissan pathfinder. I've noticed as of late that the transmission is starting to jerk a little and the rear tires spinning at take off. I also noticed some fluid on my garage floor. I checked the level of my transmission fluid there was barely any it.. but the fluid was still red. which means it was leaking. I than checked my coolant and discovered it was a beige color. Which meant that there was a crack in the radiator where the transmission fluid flows in, and the transmission fluid was mixing with the coolant. Which indicates that the trans had not been contaminated yet ( I hope). But the radiator has a defect and definitely needs to be replaced. I called Nissan corporate and they seemed to be mystified about the problem and seem to think this is a isolated problem.( like I'm the only one experiencing it). I also called South Holland Nissan, where I purchased the vehicle and they are giving me the run around. ( Steve Chase) I'm trying not to get pissed off but it's becoming more and more difficult. Nissan needs to step up and rectify the problem they know exists. I know one thing. I'll never purchase another Nissan again, and I'm going to have some flyers printed up and try to enlighten as many people as i can about Nissan's practices. We might not need Big Government in our lives but we do need regulations in place to protect us from the Nissan's of the world. Another thing if you are replacing the radiator in your 06 pathfinder, don't replace it with a Nissan radiator or the problem will happen again. There are companies that are aware of the defect and are selling a radiator that has addressed this defect. Shop around!

My vehicle would not go in reverse. I took to the nissan dealership. They said the transmission had gone out. I had purchased an extended warranty from another company. They sent their adjuster out to check things out. The service manager at the nissan dealership told the adjuster that the radiator had leaked fluid into the transmission. They said the radiator was not included in the warranty and refused to pay. We tried to get Nissan to help us. My car set in the shop for three weeks. I needed my vehicle.
