Rear axle seal failed releasing fluid on the rear brake rotor and diminishing braking ability.

Occasionally I would hear a bang accompanied by a vibration while making turns. The intervals between the events began to decrease and would occur every time I made a turn. On two occasions the rear wheels unexpectedly locked up causing skidding. The vehicle was brought to a Nissan dealer and the rear axle housing and differential assembly were replaced under the 5yr. / 60000mi powertrain warranty.

Front drive shaft on my 2005 Nissan Titan SE king cab "binded" up according to Nissan dealership, thus creating vibration in the front of the truck and thereby destroying the oil seal and corresponding bearings in the four wheel drive transfer case. All told, my truck sits in a repair shop needing new front hubs (R and L), a new front drive shaft, and a new transfer case. The cost of the repair is substantial, around four thousand dollars. I am not sure if my third party extended warranty will cover the damages or not. I am awaiting word from the warranty company to discover what indeed they will cover before I have the truck repaired.

The vehicle is a 2005 Nissan Titan SE king cab 4X4 pickup truck with approx. 60K miles. While driving on the road in two wheel drive under normal conditions the C-clip that retains the front drivers side axle within the front differential failed allowing the axle to separate from the front differential, disabling the capability of the engaging four wheel drive, and damaging the external splines on the axle shaft, as well as the internal engaging splines in the front differential. The parts have not been replaced due to the truck being out of the 60K mile power train warranty by the time I arrived at the dealership. Parts and labor estimated at ~$3400.

2005 Nissan Titan le, 86,800 miles current -rear axle seals leak - replaced at 62,000 miles (out of warranty) -rear drive shaft cracked - replaced at 62,000 miles (out of warranty) -front drive shaft bad - replaced at 75,000 miles (out of warranty) -rack and pinion bad 86,000 miles (needs replaced) Nissan refused to cover any of these repairs, even though they were safety related and should not have occurred under 150,000 miles. This vehicle is not used off road - all highway and city driving.

Comment on rear-end failure: Rear differential failed leaving a gas station at 10 mph with no trailer disabling driver from having proper control of vehicle with intermittent drive/power-train capabilities and distracting popping/grinding sounds of failed components in rear differential. Upon removing rear differential internal gears found both spider gears had numerous teeth broken off while all other internal gears looked "normal". nissan1 (case/file#6346683) and my local dealer/service manager offered no warranty replacement help after it was requested. Repair from Nissan was quoted at $3,604.67 for complete axle assembly replacement and only offers a 12,000 mile X 12 month warranty! vehicle had 69,960 miles at time of defect/malfunction. Rear differential upgraded to a detroit truetrac (limited slip differential) at owners expense but to lack of confidence in the Nissan rear axle assembly/components and reported failure cases with minimum Nissan cooperation! this is a known defect that Nissan should be responsible for on all Titans. Please help!

At 66,000 miles the rear end spider gears disintegrated causing extensive damage to the pinion gears as well. Nissan does not provide parts for this- but require the customer to purchase the entire rear end which costs $2800. I am 6000 miles outside the warranty but they will not consider any type of compensation for a known defect in the gear material and poor quality. My Nissan service writer submitted a request and was denied by Nissan.

2005 Nissan Titan rear end gears went out. I have to replace the ring and pinion gears along with the spider gear set up. Basically rebuild the entire rearend. I have read several people complained about the issue to this website. This is a major defect. I was driving at 45 mph when it happened. The rearend locked up and I slid off the road. Luckily no one was behind me when I slid off the road or there would have been an accident.

Have had to replace rear axle seals twice already in my 2005 Nissan Titan. They leak so bad that I constantly have to add oil to my differentials. Both front and back.

While accelerating out of a turn, I heard a number of loud clunks and felt truck kick. Towed to dealership and was told that the differential had failed. Conveniently, this was at 66K miles, just 6 out of warranty. I was quoted nearly 4K to repair, because Nissan does not sell the parts to rebuild, just the whole assembly, tire to tire.

I recently purchased this vehicle used and when I looked under it, I saw fluid leaking down from the axle area onto the brake heat shield. I brought it in to the dealership and they said it was a leak in the rear right axle seal. Since the vehicle had 40,000 miles on it, it was replaced under the 60,000 mile warranty.
