CAN'T AFFORD TO GET FIXED--NOW WITHOUT CAR--DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO
- Mark H., Corpus Christi, TX, US
truck was bucking and jerking but we made it home. when we tried to shift into drive after going into reverse in driveway the truck would not move. we had to use the four wheel drive to get truck off the road. after about a half hour we went back to try and put truck in drive and it moved. we limped it to our mechanic and waited to hear the reason why? i went on line typed in 2005 xterra transmission issues and i found article after article about nissan walking away from helping their customers with this issue. i allowed my mechanic to diagnose and do the repair. i had to buy a new radiator and have the engine and transmission flushed. it cost me $949.00 and no guarantee that the truck will continue to shift like it is supposed to. i keep my truck in great shape and hate the fact that it failed do to nissans negligence. this is the forth nissan i have owned and may not own another one. i did not take the truck to a nissan dealer because they just want your money for a new radiator and transmission. i read quotes that it cost people with the same issue up to six thousand dollars at dealers. what a rip off if nissan is at fault they should be held responsible for everyone's repair charges. we will see what the outcome of the class action suit brings

Nissan evidently knew there was a problem. They must have changed the radiator design because I've not heard of this problem with newer Xterra's radiators. So why no recall ?? Just replacing the radiator and leaving the old tranny thats damaged beyond repair really sucks !!

I found out today my 2005 Nissan Xterra, which was purchased new, will need the transmission, radiator, and converter replaced. I am hopping mad. I will never purchase another Nissan again now that I have read what other Nissan owners are going through. Word of mouth will definitely ruin a business. Since I work with businesses and have plenty contact with people at business meetings, I plan to spread the about what happened to my vehicle. I plan to tell everyone not to purchase a Nissan. Word of mouth is very powerful just as the news media use it. So shall I.

Twice?!?!?! Really I get to have the radiator fail twice within 30 days!? Horrible Horrible!!!
- todointx, San Antonio, TX, US
Been having the issues exactly described by http://www.nissanproblems.com/problems/transmission.shtml, Heater went out, transmission slippage, vibration, mixing coolant + transmission oil, the whole bit. After replacing the radiator, the problem recurred only 350 miles later. I'm so pissed off by this.

If everyone with a 2005-2010 Nissan truck is having the problem WHAT CAN BE DONE?? Living week to week this is devastating to us. We are not able to fix this problem and a simple maintenance bulletin from Nissan could have avoided it all, a $40. transmission cooler would have avoided it, Instead Nissan is cashing in on it!. Marking up the parts that are only avail. through the dealer, $600. for a radiator!!! $1200. for a valve body. What a way to crush the American economy by selling them junk like this.

After over 25 years of being a Nissan customer, I'm done. This is a known issue that they know about so they extended the warranty to 8/80K, but a majority of the time this goes bad between 80K-120K from what I'm reading on the net. I understand vehicles break and they need maintenance, but a catastrophic failure like this is a joke.

Once I discovered this problem I contacted Nissan corporate who said they would work with me as long as this was the problem but first I had to take it to a local dealer for further diagnosis. Well long story short the dealer found it to be this exact tranny/radiator issue and then Nissan contacted me to let me know that they would NOT be assisting at all. What a terrible company. I will never buy a Nissan again.

Started with vibration and jerking, then just quit shifting entirely. Contacted Nissan dealer in Longview and they looked at it and said the raditor had leaked into the transmission. They said this was not an uncommon problem. The radiator was covered under warranty, but not the tranny. How can that be if Nissan knows there is a problem with the radiator causing transmission failure, and they cover the radiator but not the bigger problem!? After several conversatins with Nissan's consumer complaint department got no where and told just watch to see if maybe they recall it. Had to take out a loan to get a new transmission which took THREE weeks because there were so many of them on backorder. Guess Nissan replacing a lot of transmissions. Very disgusted. Wonder if there is a class action suit somewhere?

Early this week I took my car in to get one of the recalls taken care of and when I went back to pick it up they had some bad news for me. Evidently, as almost everyone else here has experienced, the coolant and transmission fluid has been intermingling like kids at an 8th grade dance. The result was "the strawberry milkshake of death."
I've noticed that the transmission has been slipping lately and the car has been shaking while cruising at highway speeds. The dealer told me that I would need to have the transmission and radiator replaced at the cost of $7500, which is dangerously close to the value of the car. I'm well over the quietly announced 80,000 mile extended warranty, so I'm on the hook for whatever the end cost is for repair. I'm taking it to a local transmission shop to see whether I can get a better price from them.
If this problem does manifest itself around 100k mi, like it seems on average, I imagine more people will see this issue soon. Hopefully I can get this fixed for a reasonable cost or else I'll be looking for a Honda this time around.

Nissan denied my request for financial assistance evn though the car was only 2000 miles over the extended warranty period. This is a systemic and well documented problem with 2005 Xterras and I was really surprised and disappointed that Nissan wouldn't step up and do the right thing.
I paid to have the radiator replaced, engine mounts replaced and transmission flushed and serviced at a total cont of $1900. The Nissan mechanic is not certain this will fix the problem. If it does not, then I'll have to pay $4000 for a new transmission.

Known Xterra Problem, this was my forth Nissan but is the last. Nissan USA is pretending that this is not their problem. Need to sell it, worth more as parts that to fix it. PLEASE DO NOT BY A NISSAN!!!!!!!!!!!

2001 purchased Nissan Quest brand new off the lot and it broke down on us before the loan was even paid off however decided to give Nissan another chance and wish I hadn't. I don't have money to fix my car and don't know what to do at this point. I signed up for the class action lawsuit, but god knows how long that will take. Initially my heater stopped working, car started to jerk as i'm driving and than it overheated. This has been a complete dissapointment and i dont know where to turn...I NEED HELP
- Mohd N., Elk Grove, CA, US
well i guess im a member of the "i hate nissan" club! my xterra has the same problem as everyone else. a stupid manufacturing flaw in the $200 radiator has caused the $3600 transmission to go bad! planned obsolescence? its like they new the problem wouldnt manifest itself til around 100,000 miles so they offered an extended warranty to 80,000 miles. joining the class action lawsuit in hopes of putting nissan out of business. they clearly had knowledge of this problem before it was recognized by its customers but decided not to report these issues until the majority of these vehicles were past the warranty limit. its obvious that they are trying to avoid paying for this manufacturing defect so it is my hope that a huge class action lawsuit will put these people out of business thus ending these unscrupulous business practices!

I started having heater problems with my 2005 Nissan Xterra, I asked the dealership if it could be related to the radiator issues I got a notice in the mail about, they said no, just come back when I can and get a radiator flush. Then it would shutter hard while changing gears and few months later, usually during increasing speed from about 40-50 mph. So I went to a local mechanic a couple months after that, telling them I need a radiator flush and told them about my shuttering issue. I didn't want to pay dealership prices, I was not under warranty anymore. I told the mechanic about the heat issues, and the shuttering, also that the dealership said I need a radiator flush. They called me and told me the radiator had to be replaced and the transmission flushed because the radiator fluid got into the transmission. This was over $800.00 to do, during a period of work furloughs for me. What makes me super mad is that I was under 80,000 miles when I first asked the dealership about it, and they poo-poo'd the issue saying just to come back later for a flush to make the heater work when the car is stationary. Now I'm over 80,000 and out of warranty. The transmission slips some now, and I can't afford to do anything about it. Hopefully it won't quit when I have my children in the car, merging into traffic. In an economic time where you keep a car as long as possible, I have a piece of crap at 86,000 MILES. I thought buying a Nissan was a smart thing to do because of the reliability, I feel betrayed by the brand, I will not buy another one, and let everyone know about my Nissan horror story.

Wondering what to do about a "dead" vehicle. I have the same problem as most everyone else has on here with the tranny getting screwed. KBB and black book says it is only worth about $5300, so we aren't going to do anything with it right now, maybe sell it off for parts. So sad. dealer wants $3800 just to do the tranny and they didn't even mention the radiator problem. Other probs still exist too. Will now list them seperately. CAUTION TO CURRENT XTERRA OWNERS

I can't believe all the complaints. It's all the same signs which for me only showed up last month when the rumbling started. My wife thought it was the road but it got worse. I have a 350z and until this moment....I liked Nissan.
Are you seeing any of this Nissan? Do you realize how word of mouth can spread these days with internet sites?
Waiting to find out tomorrow if our very expensive extended warranty will cover it or if they will pull a Home Shield on us and find loop hole after loop hole. Only 72,000 babied ,miles on this xterra and the radiator fails....a well known problem evidently.
I also love how the Nissan dealerships act like they've never heard about this problem. I'm sending mine this link tomorrow so they can be fully educated and stop the deer in the headlights looks when you ask them if they've ever heard of this problem.

Like many, I was unaware of this being a common problem until it happened to me. I was told what the solution would be, and the cost, but I have yet to have it repaired. I'm considering selling the car to someone else who might be able to to do their own work, as I'm not really wanting to put another $5,000 into this vehicle. I'm surprised and ticked that Nissan won't do anything to help their customers with this issue. I understand that cars have problems, but this is obviously a design flaw, and they should stand behind their product. I'll never buy another Nissan.
