At approximately 38,000 miles, 1.5 years into ownership of a 2006 Nissan Xterra, fuel gauge stopped reading fuel level. Petaluma, ca Nissan dealership indicated a faulty fuel sensor not under warranty would cost $400-600 to repair. Not repaired to date. Internet search shows thousands of similar faults on 06-08 Nissan SUVS.

My 2006 Nissan Xterra's fuel sending unit has a problem, which results in (a) car does not register full tank of gas after fill-up, (B) occasional (once per 8 fill ups) "service engine" light comes on, which resets itself after several engine starts. Since problem with fuel sending unit can result in sudden stop of engine on highway, I think it should be recalled. I experienced my first occurrence of this problem at 39,500 miles, and this is in line with what other owners report. (39K~49K mile range and after 2 yrs). "I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. After filling up my gas tank, I turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. After driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. I went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30K miles. After returning home and doing research, I went online to X.nissanhelp.com after performing a search, I came across many others who have experienced the same problem. Apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. A similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 Xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. It seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. There is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39K-49K. If this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 Xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. Cost of repair ranges from $300-600."

About 5 minutes and approximately 3 miles after refueling my 2006 Nissan X-terra, the fuel gauge dropped to empty and the "low fuel light" came on. After leaving it parked for 20 minutes, I returned to the truck and when I started it the service engine soon light came on and the fuel gauge was still at empty. When I hooked the truck up to a diagnostic computer it said the fuel sending unit was bad. I looked this problem up on the web to see if any other X terra owners have had this problem. I found loads of websites with owners accounts of their problems with the fuel sending unit on Xterras frontiers and pathfinders. My truck has 62000 miles and this problem is not covered under any type of warranty. The Nissan dealer wants $99 just to look at it. If this fuel sending unit fails while I am driving isn't it a major safety problem?

I have a 2006 Nissan Xterra with 49,969 miles on it. After filling up the tank with gas the gas gauge read empty and the warning light remained on. In addition, the service engine soon light illuminated. After two more trips the gas gauge began to read correctly but the ses light remained on. I checked the gas cap was tight and subsequently spoke to a friend with the same vehicle that has had the same problem. I have not yet taken the vehicle to a Nissan dealer, because I understand the problem is most likely a fuel sending unit and will cost $300 - $600. My fear is that this problem will happen when my wife is driving and she will either run out of fuel, or think that she has run out of fuel in error.

I purchased this Xterra in may of 2006. In the past 8 weeks I have had to have my 06 Nissan Xterra towed to the dealer six times for the same issue of not starting. The first time I was told I was out of gas. Since then, I've been told the security module had gone bad, I had corrosion on the battery terminal causing it to go in to stolen mode, the fuel pump had gone bad (replaced twice), and the wiring harness to the fuel pump had a short in it (replaced twice). The dealer says they have not been able to replicate the problem and want to give me my car back without actually finding out the real issue. This is my family vehicle and I do not do any towing or off-road with it. Prior to these issues, my transmission went out at 11K miles and left me stranded on the side of an interstate for over 3 hours while I waited for a tow truck, and have had to have the fuel gauge sensor, catalytic converter, and tire pressure sensors replaced.

Faulty fuel level sending unit on a 2006 Nissan xtera.. fuel gauge will indicate a low fuel level, and upon filling with fuel, gauge will remain at low level. After a few miles gauge will begin to move until reaching proper level and then operate correctly until next required fill up. Check engine light comes on to indicate problem and service person says sending unit needs to be replaced. This is a common problem with xteras and is not covered by warranty. It seems common enough that this faulty part is a bad design and should be recalled.

I turned on my 2006 Nissan Xterra the other day and saw my check engine light was on. I knew this was clearly wrong as I just had my car serviced. Two days later I turned on my car and the gas gauge quit working completely. It fluctuates up and down. I went on the internet and researched this and found this to be a problem in many Nissan's. this clearly is a defect that should be dealt with. It costs between $300 and $600 to fix and loyal Nissan owners should not be penalized for Nissan's mismanagement.
