Xterra

  • Automatic transmission
  • 110,182 miles

I bought a preowned Xterra and within six months I have to replace the transmission and radiator. I'm livid. After searching the net about my problem, I find out it is a major problem that Nissan has not made right by any means. I'm out of pocket for a crap vehicle and I have the joy of waiting for the problem to happen again or dump my lemon off on someone else. Why couldn't they have offered some sort of modification when they realized the problem.

I'll never make the mistake of buying another Nissan. I'll be sure my friends and family don't either. We all need to picket our local Nissan dealerships. These guys only care about their bottom line.

If you buy one of these cars make sure to get a transmission cooler installed and bypass the radiator from the transmission. This is crazy that Nissan knows all about this and just says tough luck. Not sure I will ever buy a Nissan ever again.

Xterra 4.0L V6

This issue really should be a recall for the Nissan Xterra, Frontier, and Pathfinder. If you are unaware of the issue and your transmission starts acting up, it can cause you to get in an accident and could cause injury/death to you or your occupants. I was driving my Nissan xterra up a steep grade on the way home from a friends house and my transmission started having a hard time shifting up to the next gear. The RPM was almost red lining!!!! I let off the gas so I wouldn't blow up my transmission but I couldn't go anything above 40 mph. The car also started bucking and I almost got in several accidents before crawling it back to my home. This is a scary issue and I am very fortunate to have not got in an accident. I had to have my entire transmission overhauled including the valve body, computer, and new radiator. The total cost came to a devastating $4,000. My mileage was 20,000 miles past the Nissan warranty. Nissans warranty is a complete joke. Nissan should be held accountable for their faulty design. Nissan should stand before a judge with no appeal on the docket. I pray that no one was seriously injured as a result of Nissan's defective radiator design.

Xterra 4.0L V6 Dohc 24v

  • Automatic transmission
  • 95,000 miles

I replaced the radiator after I found that coolant and transmission fluid mixed. Plus, I was having gear shifting problems and after I researched the issue I found out that this is a design flaw. Hopefully, my transmission is not damaged but the prognosis is not good. My mileage was 95,000 when I became aware of the problem. The extended warranty that was introduced after the class action lawsuit (which I was not aware of) would put me in the $3,000 deductible range which is a crime.

Xterra S 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 106,000 miles

I think Nissan should stand behind their product and repair all their engineering defects on their vehicles. I called Nissan Corporate back in June 2014 and was told there was nothing they would do for me. Warranty expired. My car just turned 106,000 miles the end of August 2014. They sold these vehicles with the knowledge that the radiators were leaking coolant into the transmissions. And continue to sell these vehicles. Not to mention the fact that some of the vehicles that Nissan Dealers have repaired are experiencing the same exact issues with the coolant leaking in the transmissions again.

What a scam Nissan is pulling on the public. I was offered $1000.00 trade in value on my 2006 Xterra which has been kept in excellent condition with the exception of Nissan's engineering defects. What a slap in the face. I will NEVER, EVER PURCHASE ANOTHER PIECE OF CRAP NISSAN PRODUCT AGAIN AS LONG AS I LIVE. I WOULD RATHER BURN MY VEHICLE IN FRONT OF NISSAN USA HEADQUARTERS THAN BE INSULTED WITH A CRAPPY $1000.00 FOR TRADE IN...WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN SEPT. 2010 FOR $26,381.00 AND THEY ARE OFFERING US $1000.00!!!!

NISSAN IS NOTHING BUT A JOKE!!!!

Xterra 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 91,200 miles

My vehicle is a 2006 Nissan Xterra that I bought brand new in 2006. Well, it began to run rough about a year ago but I didn't pay much attention to it until it began to get really bad the past few months. I brought it to a mechanic and he informed me of the ongoing problem with certain Nissan vehicles. The mechanic informed me that the radiator cracks and the coolant leaks into the transmission. He also informed me that he does a lot of these.

Well I then called Nissan to see what they are doing to fix it and basically after a class action suit they extended the warranty (in an attempt to save face). For me to send my car to Nissan to fix with 91k mile I would just have a small copayment of 3k. My mechanic stated he could do if for $2500. He should me the crack in the radiator and then showed me the milky fluid that was inside!!! Called Nissan again to see if I can get any money back and was told No!. They said if I let them repair it they might have given me some money back. I told them why would I trust them repairing the problem that they created. Also why would I give them any more money!

Nissan Customer service was poor, product was poor and I will never buy another Nisan Product again! Any help to get money back?

Xterra SE V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 98,000 miles

I have had my check engine light forever and had it "repaired" multiple times based on what the error code was (air-fuel ratio sensor). The light never went off so was getting ready to just get a waiver for emissions. On my way to run an errand, the car started revving at 4000rpm but felt like it was in neutral and wasn't going anywhere in the middle of a highway with tons of cars behind me!! Was able to turn it on once traffic died down and get to a safe place to pull over. Had the car towed to my mechanic and he told me the transmission was toast, the radiator was full and looked like a milkshake....So annoyed that I have to pay $3000 before Nissan will cover anything!!!! I'm at 98000 and had no issues until then so why would they not cover the whole thing!!!! My car is obviously one that they have identified as having this issue and was part of the class-action suit. If I had started having problems 10k miles earlier, they would have covered the whole thing???? What difference does that make if it is a know problem. So pissed. There was a recall on the car which I never got any notification of and now I have to pay for it! CRAZY. Will wait to hear what the mechanics would charge but looking at these complaints, most repairs are close to $3000 anyway so basically thanks for nothing NISSAN.

Update from Aug 15, 2014: After working with my mechanic, there are no available rebuilt transmissions for this car because so many people are having this issue. The new ones are extremely expensive because of the high demand for them at this point so my mechanic couldn't help without losing money. Nissan will not escalate my complaint to the regional area until I have it towed to a Nisaan dealer for official diagnosis and still will not guarantee any assistance. My mechanic had spoken with a rep from Nissan who said that the top level of Nissan has made it so they are not able to help in any way with this issue like they normally can with warranty type issues. If Nissan had stood by their mistake, I probably would have been buying Nissan's for the rest of my life because I loved the Xterra. NEVER AGAIN.

Xterra

  • Automatic transmission
  • 103,000 miles

I noticed my transmission was slipping while pulling out onto the highway, the engine was reviving but was stuck halfway in the lane of on coming traffic (with my little girl in the car). I came home and researched it after having my husband check it out only to find that this is a common problem in the Nissan 2006 Xterras, so much that there was even a class action lawsuit that didn't do really anything for the consumer because repairs are on average $3500.00 + to fix.

After calling Nissan to complain they told me, there is nothing I could do, however, I should bring the car in for another recall that has to do with the electrical system....but I had already dealt with that last year. This is awful and still owe around $4000.00 on my loan.

I HAD BOUGHT A USED XTERRA JUST THE YEAR BEFORE WHEN LIQUID STARTED TO STREAM OUT. AS I WAS IDLING THE CAR OVER HEATED & I HAD TO WAIT FOR IT TO COOL TO ADD WATER. AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURS WITH MY DAUGHTER WE CREPT HOME. BROUGHT IT TO THE GARAGE AND WAS TOLD THAT THE RADIATOR HAD LEAKED INTO THE TRANSMISSION. REPLACED THE RADIATOR, FLUSHED THE TRANNY (SEVERAL TIMES TO REMOVE ALL THE CRUD), NOW I HAD THE ABS/SLP LIGHT ON.

Apparently I was the only Nissan Xterra owner aware of the situation given how common it is. It is known as the "Strawberry Milkshake of Death" and that's exactly what it looks like when you open up the radiator. First estimate I got to repair was $3,000. I'm pricing Toyotas now and have lost all faith in Nissan.

7/20/2011- mileage 88,406: service engine soon light on, take it to the dealer. "Coolant leak" and the upper radiator hose if replaced. 4/6/2012- mileage 99,057: service engine soon light on again, take it to the dealer. Radiator assembly and coolant replaced. transmission flush "performed service twice for thorough cleaning" per Nissan service receipt. total bill: $2189.77.

01/2013 Received the claim form from the Nissan Radiator/Transmission Cooler Reimbursement Claims Headquarters. Completed and submitted 01/12/2013.

Warranty extension issued by Nissan: it still doesn't cover me even though I was under 100K miles when the radiator assembly was replaced and I was under their lame $3000 customer co-pay....and officially the transmission "still" works.

2/21/2014 - received the notice of denied claim from the Nissan Radiator/Transmission Cooler Reimbursement Claims Headquarters.

7/15/2014- vehicle not shifting, took to Certified Transmission. the transmission is stuck in 3rd gear, needs completely overhauled. Quote $5500. The Xterra has 134,448 miles on it.

LIVID.

Just had to take my 2006 Nissan Xterra to a local garage because it was overheating. Come to find out this model year Xterra has a faulty radiator installed. I will now have to pay for a new radiator, and because of the mileage and year, I'm out of a warranty. To boot, turns out the faulty radiator has been leaking coolant fluid into the transmission fluid, and that may be beyond repair as well. Nissan is making ZERO effort to make good on this issue or even offer some financial restitution. This is all on MY hands now, and after just losing my job, I'm screwed. DO NOT BUY THIS VEHICLE!!! It will only cause you problems and ALOT of money in the future!!

Xterra V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 131,000 miles

I purchased a used 2006 Xterra. At 131,000 I took the car to Nissan and reported a strong vibration and hard gear shift. Eventually the Nissan service adviser informed me of a known defect with the radiator coolant causing damage to the vehicle's transmission. Additionally, they informed me that the previous owner declined the repair work at 92k miles. So, now since I purchased the car at greater than 100k it was too bad, I am responsible for the entire cost of the repairs.

My position is it should not matter what miles are on the vehicle. If the problem is a known defect and the original parts are still intact, Nissan should not expect the owner of the vehicle to incur the entire cost of the repair. That shows good will to Nissan customers who have spent hard earned money toward a product that they assumed would likely last.

Same issue as the coolant...because of NISSAN installing FAULTY RADIATORS in their 2006 Xterra models, the coolant fluid has now leaked into the transmission fluid, and the only way to fix this is to replace both the radiator AND the transmission!!! RIDICULOUS!!!

Another victim of the infamous Nissan radiator/transmission failure. Only AFTER the problem became apparent did a web search reveal the number of other complaints and details of a class action suit. Of course, none of this information helps me now. IF Nissan had notified owners of the potential problem, I would have replaced the radiator and avoided this costly repair. Thanks Nissan.
