So frustrating that we had no idea about this problem. If we had just been contacted by Nissan and told that with a simple replacement hose that they could save us $5500 we would have done it. My car has been so great up until this and now it's nothing but a paperweight because we are still paying it off and now they want us to pay $5500 to fix a problem that they new about. So frustrating! If they don't come up with a solution or compromise I will never buy another Nissan again!!!

I thought Nissan had a decent reputation, guess I was wrong. A car company that has had the same problem for years and is not addressing it should be sued. I have never sued anyone in my life, but would jump at the chance to on this. I am a disabled person living on a small fixed income and cannot afford such a repair, and shouldn't have to with this being an ongoing problem since 2005.

I first noticed some fluid dripping on the ground from the front passenger side of the vehicle. Popped open the hood and found that the fluid was coming from the radiator overflow reservoir. It looked like a strawberry milkshake. Had the radiator flushed only to find out what actually occurred was the transmission cooler failed and leaked transmission fluid into the cooling system.

After paying $135 to get the cooling system flushed, $550 to get the cooling flushed again and a new radiator, I found through carcomplaints.com, that the biggest problem is that the antifreeze also leaked into the transmission, thus ruining the transmission. My Xterras transmission started to slip, and I would hear a noise like I was running over rumble bars from the transmission. Worst thing was that this all occurred in Williston, ND which is 620 miles from my home in Afton, MN. I had to rent a car for my wife which cost $250 and had to rent an auto transport trailer and drive to Williston, with her Armada to pick up my car and haul it back home.

Right now my car is in the shop getting the transmission rebuilt. As it stands the first estimate I got was for $2500. Then my mechanic called and said that there were some solenoids that had to be replaced and the estimate would be closer to $2900. Like I really have this money to spend. From what I can tell just on carcomplaints.com there have been at least 100 complaints because of this issue. I also see that there was a class action lawsuit in 2012, and there are additional steps to take. My plan of action so far is to pursue the suggested steps from carcomplaints.com and inquire about filing a complaint with small claims court.

Oh by the way, can Nissan see these complaints as they come through? Hope so. Your in for a fight!!!

Xterra 4x4 S V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 113,000 miles

I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra with 113,000 miles on it. I started to notice my truck making the similar rumble strip sound while accelerating between 35-55mph. I had been driving with this sound for 3 months and finally my service engine light came on. Last week I took my truck to the Nissan Dealer in Chevy Chase, MD and found out about the problem. Crack in the radiator and fluid leaking in to the transmission. I was advised by the dealer to try and sell the truck because it will be soon not be driveable. Nissan should have been ahead of this issue with a recall. Instead they have waited and seen numerous transmission problems occur. I will never purchase a Nissan ever again.

This is the only new car I've ever bought, I bought a Nissan for the reliability. I got over the gas sensor factory defect and paid the $600.00 to repair but this is a game changer. I love my Xterra but I don't know how I can justify dumping $4,500 into it knowing by what I've rad, it's going to happen again.

Ok, I just found out about this BS that Nissan is doing. Now granted, I have loved my Xterra ever since I've had it. No major problems. I think I had to have a few minor things done but nothing like this mess of a transmission repair Nissan has so kindly placed in our laps……our big, rich, able to drop a few grand laps just to get around. My fiancé has a 2007 Altima and has had nothing but problems since she had it. Although she had to have some pretty major work done to her vehicle, she purchased an extended warranty just in time. All this time we thought I had the reliable vehicle. Now, don't want to spend all this typing on her problems….that's for another time. I will say that she will not be purchasing another Nissan…ever. Nor will any of her family members or friends after what has happened to both our vehicles.

Now, my problem happened about a week ago. I'm not gonna use curse words because I see below that this website has the right to remove any content that is deemed inappropriate. So for every word I think is inappropriate I will use the word rotergurger. So here is my story, which really rotergurger's me the rotergurger off the more I think about it.

Last Monday, a day before my rotergurgin transmission decided to funnel all the radiator fluid and OD on it, my dad asked to use my car to take my 9 year old twin brother and sister. His car has been having problems(an Infinity, imagine that) so he asked to use mine. It was bad timing and I actually needed my car that evening and the next few days, so he ended up getting a rental. No problem. They leave Columbia and make their way up to Pisgah to sliding rock and see all the stuff up there. The day after they left I couldn't even stop at a stop sign without putting my rotergurgin foot to the rotergurgin floor just to make it around the mothergurgin stop sign. Luckily there where no cars coming very fast or I could have been hurt or so could whoever was driving the other vehicle.

So, if I would have let my father take my 2007 Nissan Xterra to the mountains, going up and down hills, there is no telling what could have happened. I thank and pray to the good lord that they were not able to take my car that day.

I don't know what its gonna take Nissan to make this right. I feel like it will take, as much as I hate to say it, someone getting hurt or worse for them to step up and do what they should have done along time ago.

It blows my mind they would just ignore this potentially hazardous situation and not make it right. I have loved my 2007 Xterra, but I will never, ever, evvvveeeeer buy one of these vehicles again. Neither will my fiancé, nor will anyone in my family. And by that I mean Nissans in general. And I doubt any of my friends will either. I've never seen a company this size that is responsible for this many people's safety play an issue like this off. Just wait till someone gets hurts from this rotergurgin BS you are pulling, and then (hopefully you will wish you did the right thing), although doubtful.

Sorry I got rotergurgin mad, but this isn't just about my safety. Its, about my fiancé's safety, and my dad and siblings safety. Some bad things could have happen if I would have had them drive my car.

So Nissan, do something about this pronto, I'm not just talking about my safety and inconvenience from this problem, there are others out there driving other brands of cars who could have a tragic day from a transmission in a Pathfinder, Xterra, and all the other vehicles with the problem and all the sudden going out. Rotergurger

In closing, I would like to ask the Nissan employees that make the decisions on these kind of things, If the would want their loved ones driving these make and year models. Their children, their husbands or wives, would you want them driving these vehicles, much less your self? I guess time will tell. Hopefully sooner than later.

Had to share that,

hopefully something will come of this.

Thank you,

Xterra 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 113,000 miles

Everybody with this problem already knows the outcome of this situation. I am not going to go into what the symptoms are other than it started grabbing hard while trying to shift into fourth gear around 40 miles per hour, and on the down shift at 20 it would bang into gear. It only got worse. So instead of riding on it and seizing the trans I took it into the worst trans shop in the nation Aamco.

They had my truck for 9 days and when I picked it up the same problem occurred but even worse with check engine light on. I'm still skeptical on whether they even rebuilt the whole tranny, which I paid for, or just flushed it. I know they didn't flush the radiator and overflow canister because there was still trans fluid in the overflow canister.

On top if that the problem occurred within 24 hours of me getting the truck back I was lucky to even make back to the shop which was where I had to return it. I watched the mechanic there put the plug in diag on it and it came back with all kinds of of problems including something with the clutch but I couldn't really see the whole list.

Make a long story longer I am in the process of paying this thing off and the car report from the dealership where I purchased this Nissan didn't have the information of this year vehicle having this problem and recall is that even legal.

I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra. About 2 months ago it started shuddering, and after a new radiator and several flushes the problem still isn't fixed. After looking on carcomplaints and seeing all of the complaints for the exact issue I'm having with my Xterra, I now know that only a new transmission will fix it.

It's bad enough that Nissan is kicking us to the curb, but the fact that they couldn't even give us a heads up about the problem so we could get the faulty part replaced before it ruined our transmission...there is no excuse! Nissan's name should suffer for this, and we all deserve financial compensation. I will never buy another Nissan and if I hear anyone anticipating a Nissan purchase I will be sure to share my story and others I have read.

This is a shame, so many Nissan's have this issue and they are only covering $800. I have to cover $3000. Today if you buy a $25,000 vehicle you expect to get over a 90000 miles. I'll never buy a Nissan again. The radiator cracks and it wiped out a 3000 dollar transmission. they could have recalled the radiator and all these transmissions would have been saved.

I took my car in for an oil change when they noticed a milky substance in my radiator. My radiator was replaced along with all fluid in my radiator lines and transmission fluid. I had no idea there was any issues.

One year later the hesitation started with changing gears around the 45 to 50 mark. Took it to AAMCO and they advised me that this was a known defect on Xterras and Nissan knew all about it. They added that they have repaired over 30 Xterras with the same issue already. I contact Nissan and brought my Xterra to a local Nissan Dealer. When I dropped off the car at Nissan the Service Manager immediately confirmed what the issue was and they have seen this several times. He advised that since it is over 100,000 that Nissan will not assist me. He was right.

We turned in a case to Nissan and spoke to their consumer affairs rep. The rep agreed with me that this was a crappy way to treat a long time customer with Nissan. This is the 5th Nissan I have owned and the 2nd Xterra. I was in the process of concluding a sale on another Nissan when I was advised they would not consider any compensation for the transmission repairs. I let my salesman know I will not ever buy another Nissan. My salesman replied that this was not the first sale he has lost due to Nissan treating their customers like crap!!!

Ok .. I just found out my Xterra was overflowing coolant liquid in my yard and brought it to Mechanic for a check up . found out that my radiator had a failure and a transmission hose cracked inside the radiator and the transmission fluid all mixed up to invaded both the motor cooling system and the transmission.. I mean who was the bright guy who figured this one out .. why not 2 different cooling system..

So here is the thing .. my mechanics flushed and replaced the radiator.. he flushed and replaced transmission oil as well BUT .. what we don't know is how long the transmission will last with this solution!!! He fears that the mixture oil and cooling liquid will create long term damage to the transmission. For now it works fine.. but I'm definitely worried about the near future as I see other post stating that even if it is working fine now. IT WILL fail 3 months down the road..

On top Nissan is aware of the problem and never sent me a warning or any information about this major issue. And my truck is at 86990 miles.. so guess what even with there extended warranty I end up paying the bill.. not even knowing if a flush will do the trick.. Why didn't they send us a warning asking us to replace radiator at 70000 miles or so even if it works fin . I mean changing the radiator in a preventive manner would be much smarter then waiting for it to break down. and it seems THEY all break down just after 80000 miles .. GRRR

I feel I'm getting screwed by the company here.. I wonder if I can sue them in small claim court over here in Canada. We are allow up to $7000 worth claim with lawyers .. I don't know any suggestion people?

Needs a recall - obviously a faulty design. Nissan lost a class action lawsuit, but my car had too many miles to qualify and the failure was outside of the claim period.

I really like my Xterra, but its ridiculous Nissan won't make owners with this issue whole. If I'd done just a little research before my purchase, I would have seen immediately that this is a widespread issue with the 2007 model year. Won't be buying another Nissan, even though I've been happy with the car otherwise.

I noted $6,000 because that is what the dealer quoted me until I reminded them of this being a known defect and that my mileage under 90K and age under 9 years qualified for the extended warranty. However, there is a ridiculous $2,500 copay and it doesn't include the $200 to flush the heater core --- really?

I just bought a new 2014 Nissan Sentra...my third Nissan. I enjoy these vehicles but there are competitor versions of similar cars with apparently better customer care and support. I will be exploring those options next time. GFYS Nissan.

Note to anyone with an Xterra that falls under this recall..if your tranny fluid still looks good (not like a strawberry milk shake) and you don't feel any shudder or washboard symptoms (like running over one of those strips they put on the side of the road to wake you up when drifting to far to the center or side of the road)...then go get your radiator and cooling lines fixed now and save yourself thousands of dollars.

Also, this should be a safety recall. My pressure cap blew off and my car overheated...how can this not be a safety recall.
