2005 Pontiac G6 electric power assist motor. My power steering assist motor has failed intermittently and without warning repeatedly, locking my steering wheel while in motion and also while stopped.

Today while stopped at a traffic light my power steering failed. A message appeared on the dic and then the power steering went out. I managed to turn the car into a parking lot. I shut off the car, and re-started and the power steering began working again. This was the first time for the failure, but I have read numerous complaints from other drivers about the same problem. The 2005 Pontiac G6 GT has the electric power assist power steering.

I have experienced nearly a dozen near accidents as the power steering on my 2005 Pontiac G6 GT fails randomly while driving. When driving, the wheel locks up and becomes difficult to turn. It happens approximately once every other week and has done so for the life of the vehicle. When bringing in the car to a dealership, the dealer cannot find anything wrong with the car because turning off the engine resets the issue, and the power steering works again. I have been ignored by Pontiac since I bought the car new in January 2005. No dealer I have taken it to has been able come up with a solution.

The vehicle was repaired by lubing the power steering assembly. Within three months the power steering began to lock again. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000. Three days ago, I was driving home from indianapolis, 350 miles from home, returning from training for my new job. It was raining and all of the sudden, it felt as if my car was on ice, I couldn't control it at all. There was no warning at all. When I pulled over, I noticed that my front tires were bald, I bought them brand new two weeks prior. After driving carefully home, I took it into service. Comes to find out that my whole steering column needs to be replaced, along with my 2 front tires. According to the mechanic, my steering gear box and everything was cracked or broken in half"?? I apologize this isn't verbatim. I have read all these comments and complaints, but it doesn't seem that anyone is doing anything about it. Does someone really have to die before the problem is taken care of" also, I never received anything from GM about any problems about this and there also seems to be no recalls for this. I also just rolled 100K miles, so if there were to be anything that GM were to do about it, it seems that it is too late now. This repair is going to cost me approximately $900. Subsequently, it was Friday the 13th.... I certainly pray that no one loses their life over the steering problems with these vehicles, especially since Pontiac is no longer and GM took the bailout money. Glad they can do that and pay their bills. This repair means my family doesn't get real food for a bit....

Constant clunking in steering column. There's also plenty of "play" and drifting while driving. Other owners have experienced this and have claimed no matter what they do to try and fix the problem it consistently comes back. Bought this car to make 1000 mile trips but am now to scared to take it far from home or on the interstate. If I had known about these issues I would not have bought this car.

The power steering locks up while driving. Car is over 70,000 and is out of extended warranty. I've heard many people have this problem, and I've called around to other mechanics to have this looked at and no one seems to be able to pin point the problem.

First problem, the exterior rear tail brake lights do not function well. I did find the recall and did take it in for repair. The problem still exist even after changing out the defected part. This is very scary and can lead to a serious accident. Second problem, the power steering light comes on and service light, when this happens the steering wheel becomes very hard and difficult to steer. After turning the car off the steering wheel returns to "normal". I have seen on different forum of complaint that have been made about this problem. I think this is very dangerous and can lead to an accident and deaths. This problem exist and not only in my vehicle but in many other of the same make. This is serious safety issue because the problem with the steering wheel becoming difficult to steer makes it impossible to control the vehicle. I am very angry because ever since I got the car I have been having a lot of safety issues with it, and as a student attending college it is extremely an inconvenience. I have three years paying the car and have one year to go, this so unfortunate because as far as all the reviews the problem is never taken care of which would mean I would have to purchase another car.

The contact owns a 2005 Pontiac G6. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the check engine light illuminated, a power steering chime would sound and the steering wheel locked. The contact struggled with the steering wheel for five minutes and then it turned but had no power steering capability. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the electronic power steering assist needed to be replaced along with some sensors near the steering column. The contact received a letter from the manufacturer stating that there was an issue with the steering and to take it in to the dealer for a free repair; however, the dealer stated that he had to pay for the repairs as the title was branded. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was approximately 66,000. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.

My wife's 2005 Pontiac G6 has some very bad steering problems. The power steering is going out and the cost is unreal to fix. I think this should be a recall due to there poor design. I just don't want my wife and little girl getting hurt or even killed over a bad design on a car that she really loves.

I was backing out of my driveway and my steering went out, I had no more power steering, I turned off my car and on again then it worked ok, later it went out again about a 10 mile stretch it took forever to work again, I am still having this problem, I hear their are more incidents related to mine. I feel that this is a recall but Pontiac says it is not! so why are their so many complaints about this particular car? I heard that the 2007 models went back to a hydraulic system, not like the previous years that have electric steering.

I have a 2005 Pontiac G6 GT. Since purchase, I have had to replace the intermediate steering shaft four or five times. I recently replaced the whole column (about 4 months ago) and it is again making clunking noises. A car expert friend who drove the car yesterday noted that it seems to both drag and have too much 'play'. the car should be recalled. It is no longer under warranty at 110,000 miles and should be replaced by GM.

Power steering fails. I have to turn the car off and back on (sometimes several times) before the power steering comes back. The steering wheel is sometimes "jerky". the dealership tells me there is nothing wrong. The problems come and go.

Steering defects; electric power assist system. Loss of steering while driving vehicle. Vehicle warning lights appeared on in (O3) separate incidents that there appears to be a steering malfunction. (52 year old experience driver - horrific driving experience. Vehicle was recently purchased-used, and this happen within 7 days of the sale. Returned the vehicle to the dealership with no explanation, of defects" I do not know what if any was done by the dealership to correct this problem. What I do know is that I returned this vehicle to the GMC-Pontiac dealer, which I explained that this vehicle should be crushed and destroyed from the driving public to prevent a near future fatality to the public. This vehicle needs to be located by the ntsb and the brains checked, because if it is sold and put back on the road surely a fatal accident is to come, from the defect not the driver. Warning this is not Toyota, unfortunately it's one of our on. American name {Pontiac G-6 2005 est. Mileage at time of incident 114,800}. the local dealership stated prior to the sale that this vehicle was certified" upon return to the dealership personnel were reluctant to discuss this defect and it's findings. End.

Power steering started to get really hard to turn into parking spots or when you would try to turn then it started to just freeze up. I have taken my car into the shop and they informed me that there was a tps bulletin on the part, they repaired the part but I am not sure if it is completely repaired B/C it has started doing it again but not as badly as before. I have two small children with me constantly and I have come very close to colliding with other vehicles.

Electronic power steering goes out while driving and upon starting the vehicle. It is nearly impossible to steer or turn, and extremely dangerous. The exact same eps system was recalled on the G5's but GM has not recalled on the G6's. the repair is not minor - upwards of $1000.
