This should be a recall. They are waiting for the warranty to expire. Weve had it in 3 times for the same problem.

The dealership knew how to fix this and did it immediately.

My Pontiac G6 is at the dealership today (July 15, 2010) getting repaired (clunking in steering). Not sure about the cost as of yet today. 56,000 kms

I took the car in to a GM dealership to have the steering checked and find out what was wrong with it. Also my engine light keeps coming on and then goes off after a couple days. Neither one of those problems got fixed. I did need my brakes done and the transmission fluid done and they did the spark plugs and they told me I would have a new car when they were done with it. 1500 $ later, when I pulled out of the lot, the clunking was still there and an hour later the engine light came on. Now the clunking noise is worse than before. I will not take it back to them as they did not fix my car.

We have owned two 2007 Pontiac G6's and both have had this problem with clunking noise when turning along with squeaky brakes. We traded in one of our G6's recently after we took it in for service so I don't know if it completely was fixed or if the problem would have come back. However, now our other G6 that has only 11,000 miles is having the same problem I just hope they don't mask the problem (such as lubricate the steering shaft) since my 3 yr warranty is up in 2 months (I don't think this would be covered by powertrain warranty). GM NEEDS TO RECALL, THEY ARE AWARE!!!!!!!!

Called Pontiac when i purchased this car used off of a honda lot. They told me to have the honda dealer talk to a pontiac dealer so they did and they greased the steering column which then made the turn signals not work right and I had to take it back.
by the way the problem is back at 53000 miles...that is another complaint.

I own a pontiac g6 (2007). I heard a clunck when ever I turned the steering wheel left to right. When I brake the car shakes left and right and vibrates. I have changed the brake pads multiple times, and I was told by a mechanic it is not the brakes. I came to find out I needed the steering rack replaced. I had it replaced and three months later needed it done again. I had it done again, and now 6 wekks later need it done again!
SO in all I have replaced the original steering rack with a new one, replaced the new one with a newer one, and now 6 weeks later need a new one AGAIN. Why hasn't there been a RECALL yet!!! There are complaints all over the internet about this problem. Some people have had the problem cause them to veer into other lanes of traffic!!! I find it hard to believe GM is unaware of this problem. I guess we need to have people dying for GM to pay attention, and this is unfortnate. Hopefully when something disasterous does happen you or your surviving family can get a great attorney, sue the hell out of GM, and keep it plastered all over the news. They are on notice of this problem and could have forseen the danger that is to come.

I love this car, but it has been a pain in the butt. I have replace 2 wheel hubs within 2000 miles of each other, luckily covered under warranty. I just had the steering bar lubed due to cluncking noise on turning wheel to right or left. Hope this fixes it as my warranty runs out in 3000 miles. since the hubs replaced the car is rough riding the dealer says nothing wrong with the car. I am fed up with it.

My wife uses the G6 as her daily commute car. She began complaining about a clunk in the steering especially from a dead stop. The first time I took it to the dealer, they had a service bulletin to lube the intermediate shaft on the steering shaft. This stopped the noise for about 9 months. I returned to the dealer in May to report the same problem. Although our car was out of the factory warranty by 12,000 miles, the dealer replaced the intermediate steering shaft at no charge to me. I was very pleased with the service form my Pontiac dealer.

I'M GOING TO TAKE IT INTO THE DEALER AGAIN TODAY. SECOND TIME. I HAVE TO TAKE MY 85 YEAR OLD MOTHER TO IDAHO TO SEE MY BROTHER WHO IS TERMINAL WITH CANCER AFTER READING ALL THE REPORTS ON HERE I CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER IF WE'LL MAKE IT THERE AND BACK. BUT I DO KNOW THAT AS SOON AS I GET BACK I WILL BE GETTING RID OF IT. MAYBE I'LL GET A HORSE AND BUGGY AFTER ALL I DO LIVE IN COWBOY COUNTRY. THE WAY I LOOK AT IT WE'RE ALL PAYING A HIT MAN ( PONTIAC INC.) THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO TAKE US OUT WHENEVER THEY SEE FIT. WHEN THEY KILL US ALL OFF WHERE IN THE HELL DO THEY THINK OBAMA WILL COME UP WITH MORE TAX DOLLARS TO BAIL THEM OUT WITH. TO SUM IT UP. YOUR ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR WORD. IN THIS CASE PRODUCT. NEED I SAY MORE? LET THEM GO UNDER, LET THEM STARVE. YOU TREAT PEOPLE THE WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED. IF THIS IS HOW THEY TREAT THEIR VALUED CUSTOMERS ALL I CAN SAY IS PLEASE DON'T VALUE ME...

I just started having this problem. The dealership said that they replaced this part in the steering column but the noise is still prominent. To add to my problems, after they said that they fixed it, something went wrong with the instrument panel and the gears slip. The car is not drivable now and I am still waiting for this problem to be resolved.
I am currently working in the Automotive industry myself. I see all the time people complaining all the time that no one buys American cars and the Japanese are taking it all. I hope I do not get this problem again because I would hate to buy any other foreign made car since I still believe that American Auto makers can make better cars than their Japanese counterparts. I can't negotiate with safety and I am really concerned now . Does someone who to contact if this problem persists - Lemon Law??
Update from Apr 3, 2010: At 57K miles. This problem is back. I broke my back with 1200 dollars worth of repairs at the dealers yesterday. Changed the hub this time. Wow! what a bunch of crooks. I want to get rid of this car right away but I can't since I'll have to pay out of my pocket for this. My wife drives this car so I cant risk not having any repairs done. Clunking sound came back pretty bad and after they fixed it, I can still hear it a bit.POS GM
- G B., Holland, MI, US
The clunking noise appears only when the car is completely stopped. Then, when you start and turn the steering wheel while accelerating you here the clunking noise. Won't clunk if you are completely stopped.
The garage lubed the steering shaft while they order a brand new steering shaft and it stopped of 80% of the clunking. Hopefully it was still under my standard guaranty. Don't wait if your hear a clunking noise. The noise is not annoying that much, so you can wait like me ( 6 months ) until I mentioned it to my garage. It could have cost me a lot !!

After reading other posts I can see this is a problem that has been around for 3yrs with the Pontiac G6. When I took my car into the dealer it was no surprise that they knew what I was talking about even before I finished my sentence. I was told Pontiac was aware of the clunking noise when you turn and the squeaking noise when you brake. They told me the dealership did receive a bulletin explaining that the problems (Adjustments needed to the steering box and addition lube on the steering shaft). I found it funny that something serious like your steering box wasn't a recall but a dealership bulletin. Luckily I was still under my 3yr warranty and it caused me nothing, but if you have this problem take care of it quick and while under warranty unless you might end up paying big. It was kind of interesting that out of the 9 people in the waiting room 5 of them had their G6 in there for the same problems. I also explained about the brakes squeaking and was advised that the Pontiac G6 went with a ceramic/metal brake and there is no way to fix the squeaking. I was advised to keep them until they go bad and then buy new/different brakes for the car.

Knocking when making left hand turns only. Consistently getting worse. Had similar problem with a Grand Prix. Believe this is a problem GM definitely needs to resolve.

Whenever I turn the steering wheel I hear this clunk noise.
- pgray, Milwaukee, WI, US
The clunk or snap occurs on turns while backing from a parking-space or on turns from a
dead-stop. The malady does not occur while at road-speeds. The same thing happened on
a family-member's 2005 G6. It was a faulty steering-box. It had to be replaced. You would
have thought that Pontiac would have taken care of the problem in two years of hearing
about it.

Had steering box replaced in 2009 and then recently clicking and thumping started again and GM dealer told me I needed to replace the steering intermediate shaft to a tume of 450.00 dollars I asked him why either of the components would ever go bad I t just happens he said. Now I know why people are saying GM junk. Very disappointed in GM Especially since I see they have been having this problems for a couple of years and haven't corrected the problem. Don't tell me there isn't a safety factor connected with this My last GM car
