The key gets stuck in the ignition while trying to turn the car on and off. Finally the key is stuck in the on position and the vehicle cannot be turned off. After several attempts, the key comes out while the car is still running and in the on position and the car is not in park. After several repairs, the ignition housing continues to fail. The car can easily roll off as the key comes out and the vehicle is not in park, the key even comes out while the car is driving or in drive. The only way to shut the car off is to manually remove the wire harness from the battery located under the steering column.

Power steering goes off on it's own while driving my 2007 Saturn Ion. Use to occur few times a week now happens almost everytime while driving. When the car is turned off than turned back on the power steering returns to normal for a few miles till it goes off again. Thought I had seen a recall on searching online but when I called GM dealership (Saturn's out of business) they claimed there has never been a recall on Saturn Ion 2007 for power steering. Have seen online other customers with same problem and considering car only 3yrs old and only 47,000 miles and that it goes away when car turned off and back on that it might be some kind of computer error or something. Every difficult to steer when it does go off and dealership wants $125 for diagnostic & up to $600 to correct error.

Ion 4-cyl

My 2007 Saturn Ion's power steering has begun to shut itself off at random times while driving and it can be very dangerous since the few times it has I have either been on the interstate or driving on winding roads without the ability to easily turn. Also, the key locks up in the ignition and I have to turn it on, move the vehicle and turn it off again for it to allow me to fully turn off and pull out the key. Also the wheel bearing have begun to make a loud squeaking noise.

Ion

After starting the car and driving for a few minutes the power steering gets really hard to steer, and the power steering light turns on in the instrument panel. If the vehicle is turned off then turn on the power steering works but after another few minutes the steering gets hard again. This occurs everyday. I have not replaced nothing to fix this problem yet. I was hoping to find a recall on my vehicle. I have researched online and it seems that many Saturn Ion's have this same problem. This makes for dangerous driving especially when making a turn and suddenly the power steering stops working.

Ion

  • 50,000 miles
I have had trouble with wheel locking and trouble turning. I also was told by Firestone that I need to have my steering intermediate shaft replaced. This should be recalled because it is manufacturer's fault. I should not have to pay for this on a 2007 Saturn Ion. The mechanic also told me several cars have come in with same problem. I called Saturn and Chevrolet dealers to ask about recalls and was informed that other models for Saturn have been recalled for power steering problems but not the Ion and it is same problem. This is a major safety issue.

The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power steering. There was a power steering light that illuminated during the failure. She noticed that it was extremely difficult to turn into a parking space as a result. The contact turned off the vehicle and restarted it. When she restarted it, the failure seemed to have corrected itself. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 36,500. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.

My power steering in my Saturn Ion went out when I was driving about 55 mph. When trying to get off the highway, I had no power steering at all and hit a guard rail. I turned the car off and restarted it after collecting myself. The powere steering worked just fine. The following day the same thing happened, was running fine then, no power steering again. This time it never came back. I have seen many recalls for GM cars that have the same power steering system. Why not for the Saturn. It is just an accident waiting to happen. I have been researching this on line and have found many others with the same issue that have a Saturn. Sounds like a defective part to me!

Ion

The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Ion. While driving 55 mph, the power steering light illuminated and less then a minute later the power steering wheel locked. The wheel was very difficult to turn and the contact was able to drive onto the emergency lane. When the vehicle was turned off and then back on it began to drive normally. The dealers diagnostic test indicated that she needed a power steering motor. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 112000.

Ion

  • 56,000 miles
I have a 2007 Saturn Ion. It has worked fine up until about a month and a half ago (today's date is July 27, 2010). We were driving on a normal day, no excessive heat or cold, and the power steering just went out. It completely stopped without warning, without apparent cause. We were on a highway around cars driving heavy speeds, so we had to pull off quickly. After stopping and starting the car, it seemed to be back to normal. We thought it was just a fluke. But then it happened about a week later, and it continues to happen more frequently. For instance, the power steering stopped about 20 yards from my front door yesterday, and during a fifteen minute trip, it went out three times. Giving in to the fact that the problem was getting much worse very quickly, I checked on the extended warranty that I had bought when I purchased my car. It covered all electrical problems, as I had remembered, but upon further review, I realized that power steering was listed completely separately, and in fact, was not covered. At that point I decided to do some research to see how common this problem was in Saturn Ion's, and I have found that the problem is not only occurring in 2004-2007 Ion's, but had also occurred in other GM vehicles. The difference being, that those other vehicles of similar make but different brands have been recalled, but Saturn has not. I have read multiple instances of people's lives almost being lost due to accidents in which the steering stopped and sent people into head-on traffic (much like it did with my family), and yet GM refuses to recall these vehicles. I wish someone would answer everyone's question of whether it is going to take the death of a person or a family in a crash due to power steering failure to make someone pay attention to this problem?

2007 Saturn Ion. The key was turning funny in the ignition. I thought the key had bent or something. A couple days later the key will not turn in the off position. The car will not turn off. We had to take apart the steering column to pull the fuse. The car remains in this condition because I am told it will cost close to $500 to fix. I google this and there are numerous websites filled with this same complaint. GM has wiped their hands of the Saturn. I feel this is a manufacturers defect and should be repaired at no cost to Saturn owners.
