I bought a Toyota because I was tired of fixing Fords with their engine problems. I don't have the money to be investing in engines that should last at least 100,000 miles or more. I change the oil every 3000 miles and should not be having issues.

I took my 2008 scion xb to dealer to have engine oil changed and perform the oil burning test. Drove 1200 miles and was told that it burnt "hardly any" at all. I'm now at my 5000 mile oil change and have had to add over 4 quarts since oil change. Thats roughly 1200 miles to a quart.

First I was told that "it was a little above the full mark when changed and now is just a little below". So it passed the test. I want to know why they overfilled the engine in the first place. I would expect to have the oil measured exactly, not just looking at the stick.

The possible reason given for high oil use by the dealer was I did not use a factory oil filter. They told me that aftermarket filters did not have a "check valve" in them and this could be the reason. This is bs.

I'm reminded of cars that I owned in the 70's where I have to carry oil with me and add every few fill ups.

The car has 120,000 miles on it now but has always burnt oil.

Since they know there is a problem with the piston oil passages they need to do a full recall and take care of their customers. And yes this will effect my decision in buying another Toyota product.

I usually have to add a half quart in between oil changes. I took it in after receiving a recall notice and they said it passed I can't believe it.

I did the oil consumption test as followed @ 1,200 miles and Toyota consider this passing. In order for Toyota to fix the problem it has to be 1,000 miles or less. The service department at my local Toyota dealership, that I have an excellent relationship with, felt my pain of this embarrassing situation and told me to contact the Toyota's Consumer Hotline. When I contacted the Consumer Hotline they seemed to not care about my problem as if they wanted to throw me under the bus when I demanded to get this problem fixed.

I have bought Toyotas in the past and never experienced this before. This is the kind of situation that will ruining my loyalty to Toyota and hurt my friendship with the local Toyota dealership.

One day while driving to work my check oil light came on. I was surprised as I have always followed the manufacturer's guidelines of 5,000 mile oil changes. I drove to the shop near work and I was 2 quarts low! I wasn't due for an oil change yet so I thought perhaps a rookie did my last oil change and didn't tighten some doohickey.

I kept an eye on my oil and it became low again. I took it into Toyota for a recall so had them look at the oil problem. They didn't tell me a TSB had been issued on this engine. This is, after all, a 2008 Camry engine. But they hinted to me that I may want to consider an engine rebuild.

I did research and found a Scion online forum where this problem is well documented. I called Toyota in Anaheim asking them what they are going to do about this issue. By this time, with all the driving I had passed my 80K mile mark and because of this was now out of drivetrain warranty. They said 1 quart of oil consumption for every 1500 miles is normal.

I love this car except for this. I just decided to trade it in before I cross the 100K mile marker to have a nice down payment for another vehicle. But after 6 Toyotas in my family, I vow I will never buy another Toyota. I'm off to the Mazda dealer.

purchase the car from car max 4-13 with a 60 month 60,000 mile full coverage warranty. noted car nearly out of oil when oil change was due. no notice of leaks or dripping . After research found others with this vehicle and other Toyotas having the same problem at approx. 57,000 miles. Have contacted Scion and they now have this issue on file, have also contacted a law firm as there may be a pending lawsuit about this malfunction....law firm Chimicles & Tikellis,

Car Max wanted us to take car to Nissan and have oil changed and return in 1,000 miles.....not an option for me....at this point warranty nearly up! Contacted

Scion and a file was created for this problem and info sent forward to Deluca Toyota. Will have the car checked there....may need to file a lawsuit at this point against Car Max and Scion.

Update from Sep 5, 2014: still have heard nothing from the law firm.....My Toyota dealer would not budge on repairs due to Toyotas say so.....this is still so wrong...we have got ridden of the car for a Honda and will never purchase a Toyota again

My 2008 Scion at 57000 miles has abruptly started using oil and I bought a Toyota knowing that it was going to last for many many miles without issues such as using oil. I regularly change the oil every 3000 miles and now I fear a major overhaul is coming my way which I just can't afford to deal.I have checked for leaks and there is no sign anywhere.I have loved this car and just had expected it to take me down the road trouble free for many years! I have put 3 quarts in the last 3000 miles or since it hit 57000 which is when I last changed oil and as usual it is time for it to be serviced again. How much is this going to cost me at my dealer?
